E-File the Form 2290 For any Heavy Vehicles First Used in April 2012

HVUT, or the Heavy Vehicle Use Tax Although the Heavy Vehicle Use Tax is imposed annually, it is also mandatory for vehicles to file for this using the IRS form 2290 after the first use month. The typical tax year for heavy vehicles begins on July 1 and ends on June 30. For vehicles that are first used during the tax year, a prorated tax must be paid for the months that the vehicle was in use. This can be done with the IRS Form 2290 and the easiest way to file the 2290 is through

When a new vehicle is placed in service, the Form 2290 must be filed by the last day of the following month. For Example, vehicles that were placed in service during the month of March will need to file HVUT using the 2290 by April 30. The tax will be calculated based on the number of months the vehicle will have been used during the tax year. Remember that the tax year for Heavy Highway Vehicles is from July to June. If a vehicle was used during any part of a month, the tax will be calculated for that month as a whole. For Example, if a vehicle was used on March 28th, It will be taxed as though it was used the entire month.

Although it is rare, some Vehicles that fit the above description may be exempt from the HVUT and Filing requirements of Form 2290. To officially be exempt from filing Form 2290, the vehicle must be owned and operated by the following:
• The District of Columbia
• The Federal Government
• state or local government
• Mass Transportation Authority (Only if granted certain powers normally exercised by the state)
• Non-Profit Volunteer Fire Department, Ambulance Association, or Rescue Squad
• Indian Tribe Government (Only if the Vehicle is Used for essential Tribe or Government Function)
• American National Red Cross
• Mobile Machinery that meets specifications for a chassis
• Qualified Blood Collector Vehicles

Filing IRS HVUT Form 2290 with ExpressTruckTax

Filing Form 2290 online is very simple through - An IRS Authorized E-File provider. All that is needed is basic information about the vehicle such as its first use month, taxable gross weight, and VIN. All taxable highway motor vehicles must file this form.

You may be asking yourself, what does the IRS consider to be a taxable highway motor vehicle? Well, the IRS considers Highway Motor Vehicles to be taxable if it is a self-propelled vehicle that is designed to transport a load over public highways. Such vehicles may include trucks, truck tractors, and even buses. The IRS does not usually consider vehicles like vans, pickup trucks, panel trucks, or other similar vehicles because they typically weigh less than 55,000 pounds.

The HVUT rates for these vehicles are broken down into 3 categories. Vehicles that are less than 55,000 pounds do not have HVUT because they do not qualify as a heavy vehicle. Vehicles between 55,000 and 75,000 pounds owe $100, plus $22 per 1,000 pounds over 55,000 pounds. And last but not least, for vehicles that weigh over 75,000 pounds the maximum HVUT is $550 annually. allows you to fill out your IRS Form 2290 online and send it to the IRS electronically! HVUT(Heavy Vehicle Use Tax 2290) Filing for 2012-2013

Each year, heavy vehicles that operate on public roads must file the Form 2290 as part of HVUT (Heavy Vehicle Use Tax). This is an annual tax that must be filed for the tax year of July 1 until June 30. As of now, the IRS is not yet accepting this form for the tax year of July 2012 - June 2013. Filing for the Form 2290 should begin on July 1st of 2012.

Beware of scams or other disingenuous offers to file the 2290 now or File Early for this coming Tax Year. The IRS is not yet accepting this Form for the new tax year as of yet.

The only scenario in which someone would need to file now would be if their heavy vehicle was first placed in service during the month of April. In that case, the form 2290 would be due by May 31. This is because vehicles that are placed in service during the tax year must file for the portion of the tax year that they were on the road.
