Correcting Information on Form 2290

0
There are occasions when the information needs to be corrected on Form 2290 after it has been submitted and accepted by the IRS.  The process to correct the information depends on what information needs to be corrected.

Many corrections will require a phone call to the IRS at 866-699-4096.  For typos, misspellings and name corrections, you will want to correct the information on your Schedule 1 and fax it into the IRS and the IRS will make the corrections.  They may require additional information to confirm the correction, but will let you know when you call the number listed above.

If you have the wrong EIN on your Schedule 1, you will want to correct the EIN and fax it along with a letter explaining that the EIN was wrong.  If the return was accepting with an EIN that was not yours, it means the EIN belongs to someone else and the IRS will have to figure out whose payment you made.  If you are told that you need to file a new 2290 and pay the taxes again and then file for a refund using Form 8849, call back until you talk to someone who will assist you without making you pay the tax again and have to wait for a refund.

If your business name changes for any reason, but the EIN remains the same, you will change the business name and fill out the Name Change form and MAIL to the IRS.  A fax will not be accepted as an original signature is required.

The easiest and most common correction is the VIN correction.  VIN corrections can be done online with ExpressTruckTax and are completely free, even if you did not use ExpressTruckTax to file the original return.  You would file a Form 2290 Amendment and choose the VIN Correction option.  It is completely free and takes only a couple minutes!

For any questions about Form 2290 Corrections, go to ExpressTruckTax.com or contact our Express Tax Support Center in Rock Hill, SC by phone at 704-234-6005 or email at support@ExpressTruckTax.com.  We have Spanish Support too!

EIN Required to File Form 2290

0
If you are filing Form 2290 for Heavy Vehicle Use Tax (HVUT), you must have an EIN to file the return. The IRS will no longer accept Social Security Numbers for the Form 2290. An EIN is an Employer Identification Number, also known as a Federal Tax Identification Number, and can be used to verify a business entity.

If you do not have an EIN, you can apply for one online through the IRS website or if you don’t have the time or unable to get to a computer, you can have a service provider, like Truck Services of North America to do it for you.

NOTE: Remember, for vehicles first used in November, the due date to file your Form 2290 is December 31, 2012. While you can get your EIN immediately, it can take the IRS up to 10 business days to update new EINs into their system; so you will want to get your EIN today!

Once your EIN is in the IRS system or if you already have one, you can file your Form 2290 return and receive your Stamped Schedule 1 within minutes at ExpressTruckTax. To E-File Form 2290 online now, go to ExpressTruckTax.com or contact our Express Tax Support Center in Rock Hill, SC at 704-234-6005 or email us at support@ExpressTruckTax.com  We have Spanish Support too!

How To Handle Form 2290 Suspended Vehicles

0
If a highway motor vehicle does not exceed mileage 5,000 miles or less (7,500 miles or less for agricultural vehicles) it is considered suspended and is exempt from tax. Mileage use limit means the use of a vehicle on public highways 5,000 miles or less (7,500 miles or less for agricultural vehicles). The mileage use limit applies to the total mileage a vehicle is used during a period, regardless of the number of owners.

An agricultural vehicle is any highway motor vehicle that is:
  • Used (or expected to be used) primarily for farming purposes, and
  • Registered (under state laws) as a highway motor vehicle used for farming purposes for the entire period. A special tag or license plate identifying the vehicle as used for farming is not required for it to be considered an agricultural vehicle.

So why would do you have to file if there is no tax due?  In order to obtain your registration and/or tags, state require and Stamped Schedule 1 from the IRS for all vehicles 55,000 lbs or more.  You must file Form 2290 in order to receive your Stamped Schedule 1.

At ExpressTruckTax.com, you can file your Form 2290 and receive your Stamped Schedule 1 within minutes. To E-File the Form 2290 online now, go to ExpressTruckTax.com or contact our Express Tax Support Center in Rock Hill, SC at 704-234-6005 or email us at support@ExpressTruckTax.com.  We have Spanish Support too!

E-File Form 2290 for Heavy Vehicles First Used in November 2012

0
Although the HVUT, or the Heavy Vehicle Use Tax is imposed annually, it is also mandatory for vehicles to file the IRS Form 2290 after the first use month. The typical tax year for heavy vehicles begins on July 1 and ends on June 30. For vehicles that are first used anytime during the tax year, a prorated tax must be paid for the months that the vehicle was in use. This can be done with the IRS Form 2290 and the easiest way to file the 2290 is through ExpressTruckTax.com

When a new vehicle is placed in service, the Form 2290 must be filed by the last day of the following month. The tax will be prorated based on the number of months the vehicle will have been used during the tax year. If a vehicle was used during any part of a month, the tax will be calculated for that month as a whole. For example, if a vehicle was used on November 28th, it will be taxed as though it was used the entire month, regardless of the fact it was only used for a couple of days. So vehicles that were placed in service during the month of November will need to file HVUT using the 2290 by December 31, and the tax will be based on 8 months, instead of the full year.

All you will need is:

Then you will transmit the return to the IRS and you will receive your Stamped Schedule 1 in just minutes! For more information or to get started today, visit ExpressTruckTax.com or contact our Express Tax Support Center in Rock Hill, SC at 704-234-6005 or email us at support@ExpressTruckTax.com.  We have Spanish Support too!

Understanding Your HVUT Responsibilities

0
What is HUVT?
HVUT is the Heavy Vehicle Use Tax that is a fee assessed annually on heavy vehicles operating on public highways at registered gross weights equal to or exceeding 55,000 pounds. The gross taxable weight of a vehicle is determined by adding the unloaded weight of the motor vehicle and any trailers together with the maximum load customarily carried on-road by the truck-trailer combination.

Who Must File?
You must file Form 2290 for the tax period beginning on July 1, 2013, and ending on June 30, 2014, if a taxable highway motor vehicle is registered, or required to be registered, in your name under state, District of Columbia, Canadian, or Mexican law at the time of its first use during the period and the vehicle has a taxable gross weight of 55,000 pounds or more.  The deadline to file is August 31, 2013.

What is Required?
You need the details of your business - Business Name (Sole proprietor can use their legal name) and address, EIN (Employer Identification Number) , details of the authorized signatory.

You need the details of your vehicle - Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) and Gross weight of the Vehicle
If you are going to pay the IRS by direct debit (we strongly recommend it), keep the routing number and the account number ready.

When to File?
Heavy Vehicle Use Taxes must be filed using the Form 2290 on an annual basis. The Tax period for Heavy Vehicles begins on July 1st and ends on June 30th of the following year. The annual renewal of your Form 2290 for a new tax period IS DUE BY August 31st each year.

For new vehicles placed in service, the IRS Form 2290 must be filed by the last day of the month following the month of first use. For example, if you purchase and first use a vehicle in October, you must file a Form 2290 by the end of November.

How to File?
Electronically.  File Form 2290 electronically through any electronic return originator (ERO), transmitter, and/or intermediate service provider (ISP) participating in the IRS e-file program for excise taxes, such as ExpressTruckTax.com. E-Filing is required by the IRS, if you are reporting 25 or more trucks on a return. For more information on e-file, visit the IRS website at www.irs.gov/uac/e-file-Form-2290 or visit Trucking Tax Center.

Paper.  Mail Form 2290 to the address shown under Where To File. If you did not pay the tax using the Electronic Funds Transfer or Electronic Federal Tax Payment System (EFTPS), mail Form 2290-V and your check or money order with Form 2290.

For more information or to get started today, visit ExpressTruckTax.com or contact our friendly US Based Express Tax Support Center in Rock Hill, SC at 704-234-6005 or email us at support@ExpressTruckTax.com.  We have Spanish Support too!
