E-filing Excise Taxes Now Available For Heavy Highway Vehicles

November 3rd, 2011

Although it has been a long year for those in the Trucking and Transportation Industry, It is now possible to transmit returns to the IRS through Express Truck Tax. The process for filing Heavy Vehicle Use Tax Returns was briefly interrupted as the legislation that controlled the tax itself nearly expired. Fortunately, due to urges from various congressmen and President Obama himself, the legislation was extended. Had Congress let the legislation expire, there would have been a shutdown of any government funded Transportation jobs. Although many industry experts agree that new legislation is needed, this extension serves as a quick fix the much worse possibility of all government transportation projects being shut down.

This change resulted in a later filing period for 2011 – 2012. Instead of filing by the month of August, the filing period for the 2011-2012 tax period begins on November 1st and ends on November 30th 2011. The IRS did not even begin accepting these forms until November 1st. With a much shorter filing period, those needing to file a Form 2290 will greatly benefit from eFiling this return. The IRS has been steadily pushing people to eFile since last year. The IRS is no longer sending paper forms to those needing to file. They even admit that the eFiling process is easier for them and saves the government money as opposed to paper filing.

The Form 2290 is incredibly easy to eFile with Express Truck Tax. The whole process can be completed in a matter of minutes. Once the 2290 Form has been submitted to the IRS, a Stamped Schedule 1 will be sent from the IRS directly to the taxpayer through Express Truck Tax. The form will arrive as a pdf attachment in an email.

To fill out the Form 2290 online, all you will need is the basic business information such as the EIN, VIN, and the vehicle weight. The IRS accepts several different payment options including: Electronic Funds Withdrawal, EFTPS (Electronic Federal Tax Payment System), and also check or money order. Each of these options is fairly simple. Electronic Funds Withdrawal is a very quick and immediate process, just provide your bank account number as well as your routing number, and the IRS will electronically withdraw the payment.

Express Truck Tax offers a very User-Friendly process. Instead of using a tax form that is loaded with confusing tax jargon, The Express Truck Tax system uses a series of basic questions that are simple and straightforward so that you can finish it in as little time as possible. Even if you have questions regarding the Form 2290, you can always call the dedicated Truck Tax Experts at their USA based customer support center in Rock Hill, SC at 704.234.6005 or email them at support@ExpressTruckTax.com

File HVUT (Form 2290 Heavy vehicle Use Tax Return) in November 2011

October 25th, 2011

Due to the fact that this filing season for Heavy Vehicle Use Taxes (HVUT) has been changed, the IRS Form 2290 will now be available in November of 2011. The legislation that controls the Heavy Vehicle Use Tax nearly expired earlier in the year, and Congress was forced to extend the current legislation in order to prevent a shutdown of the Government funded Highway and Transportation departments.

The Heavy Vehicle Use Tax is an excise tax that is filed annually on none other than Heavy Vehicles that are used on public roads. Vehicles that are included in the tax must be of a certain weight (55,000 pounds or more) as well as a certain mileage (5,000 miles or more, 7,500 or more if agricultural).

In order to make the filing process easier with the IRS using Form 2290, it is very important that you keep accurate records, just like you would when filing any other type of tax return. It is crucial for anyone filing form 2290 to maintain their records for at least 3 years prior to the filing date for any taxable highway vehicles registered to them. For fleet owners and small trucking companies who have filed form 2290 in the past, it is wise to always keep the 2290 records on hand, as one never knows when IRS inspection may take place. It is even important to save these returns if they are only for a part of a year. In the case of a suspended vehicle (public highway use was less than 5,000 miles/year) it is still necessary to keep records of Form 2290’s filed for them as well.

IRS 2290 Update for Tax Year 2011 – 2012

July 22nd, 2011
On Monday, July 18, the IRS announced that the 2290 filing deadline for the 2011-2012 tax period would be extended by 90 days. All 2290 forms, which are usually due on August 31, will instead be due on November 30. The extension is designed to alleviate any confusion that may be caused by changes in the HVUT tax laws, which are currently set to expire on September 30, 2011.

In order to assist heavy vehicle owners with state vehicle registration, the IRS submitted new regulations requiring all states to accept the 2010-2011 proof of HVUT payment (schedule 1) for registration purposes during the months of July through November. The regulations also extend the grace period during which a newly acquired vehicle can be registered by the state without a 2290. Any heavy vehicle acquired on or after July 1 may be registered without proof of HVUT payment within 150 days of purchase. You will need to provide the state with documentation showing the purchase occurred within this grace period.

The IRS has tentatively announced that they will begin accepting 2290 returns and 2290 payments for the 2011-2012 tax period beginning November 1. ExpressTruckTax will send email notifications to all our registered users as soon as the IRS begins accepting 2011 electronic returns.
