Trucker Budgeting Tips To Really Help You Save

0
ExpressTruckTax encourages trucking businesses to budget
Trucking gives you freedom. It provides the ability to drive all over the country without coworkers breathing down your neck and if you’re an owner-operator then you even get to be your own boss. However, with great power comes great responsibility.

In today’s case, we mean spending responsibility. Trucking can be very expensive, especially when you’re just starting out. Before you establish yourself as a reputable driver you may have to really nickel and dime a few things. A proper budget can make or break you in the transportation industry, so check out a few budgeting basics.

How To Create A Trucking Budget

Know Your Numbers

Before you start spending it’s a good idea to know how much you can actually spend. Meet with an accountant or financial advisor to see how much of a loan you can get when you decide to start up your trucking company.

Also, you will want to know how much you’re making and spending. These numbers can be easy to track with the help of a program like TruckLogics. TruckLogics will track your expenses and income so you can run financial reports at any time to see exactly where your money is coming and going.

Cut Costs
Once you know how much you can spend, you don’t have to spend it all. Cut costs and allocate money to the proper places. If you need office supplies consider getting refurbished computers. Also, you don’t have to buy the top of the line, brand new rig. Look into your used options or consider leasing.

The top 3 trucker expenses are gas, food, and lodging. Save on fuel by slowing down to improve fuel efficiency or consider getting a fuel card for rewards. Also, buy your on the road snacks in bulk to save and cook your own meals in your rig.

Last but not least, to save on lodging, stop sleeping in motels. Outfit your sleeper cab to be comfortable enough for a great night of rest.

Then put all the money you save from cutting costs into your actual savings. You will need it in case business becomes slow or something happens to one of your trucks. In the event of an emergency if you don’t have savings to pull from then you could find yourself in trouble.

Consider Your Options

Don’t just jump in and impulsively buy things. If the first insurance policy you’re offered looks good read the fine print anyways. It may offer more coverage than you need, so be sure to see what your state actually requires.

Also, things like bobtail coverage to protect your truck while in operation without a trailer or physical damage coverage may cost extra.
ExpressTruckTax helps truckers file Form 2290 on time

Do you really need an assistant back at home to cover your books and manage dispatches or can you do it all yourself with the help of a trucking business management program like TruckLogics?

Be On Time

Nothing stings like late fees, so be on time. File your 2290 by the deadline with the help and ExpressTruckTax and stay on top of your quarterly IFTA return with ExpressIFTA. Also, pick up and deliver your loads on time!

Time is money in this business, so you don’t want to keep people waiting. Plus, you can even be fined for delivering loads late and in some cases, you may have to wait until the next day to come back and unload your freight. That extra day of waiting won’t just be frustrating, because it will also be expensive.

Happy Trucking

We know you’re in the trucking business because you love it, and we know you can make it. Soon you will grow your business to new levels and with the help of budgeting, you will be able to save faster. You never know when those savings will come in handy, so be prepared when an emergency or great investment opportunity comes along.

HVUT Form 2290 Is Due Tomorrow, File NOW!

0
HVUT Form 2290 Deadline
Whoa, it’s time to get moving! Your Heavy Vehicle Use Tax (HVUT) Form 2290 is due tomorrow, by August 31 at midnight. The deadline is here! That means you’re literally running out of time to file without facing major penalties.

We know this puts you in quite a state of urgency, but stay calm. You can file Form 2290 in a matter of minutes with ExpressTruckTax. Plus, to help you file even faster we have put together a list of frequently asked questions and provided the answers.

HVUT Form 2290 FAQs

1. What is my first use month?

Your first use month is literally the first month that you use your heavy vehicle during the tax period. The current HVUT period runs from July 1, 2017 to June 30, 2018 and form 2290 is due based off of your first use month.

To be specific, it’s due by the last day of the month following your first use month. Because most truckers use their trucks in July, it’s their first use month and that makes August 31st their deadline day. However, if you don’t use your truck until October then your Form 2290 wouldn’t be due until the last day of November.

2. Can I pay the amount of HVUT I owe with a credit card?

Unfortunately, no. You can not pay the amount of HVUT you owe with a credit card because the IRS doesn’t accept credit cards.

One option is to pay with direct debit or electronic fund withdrawal, by authorizing the IRS to debit the amount you owe from your bank account. In order to do this, you will need to provide your bank account and routing number which can be found on one of your checks.

Or you can also pay with the Electronic Federal Tax Payment System, where you will create a free account with www.ettps.gov. The amount you owe will be debited from your bank account, but it could take up to 10 days to create your account.

You will need to schedule your payment within your account. You need to schedule at least by 8 PM the day before the deadline to give the IRS enough time to debit the funds from your account.

If you want to, you can mail the amount you owe directly to the IRS with a check or money order. Just print your completed 2290-V (your payment voucher) from page 11 of your completed 2290 form and mail it with your payment.

You only have 2 days left to file!
3. What is an EIN?

Your EIN is your Employer Identification Number, and it’s used to identify a business entity. To complete Form 2290 you need an EIN and can apply for one online with the IRS. If you already have an EIN it can be found on a previous stamped Schedule 1.

You can not use your Social Security Number in place of your EIN on HVUT Form 2290. If you use your SSN instead of your EIN your form will be rejected. If you need an EIN you better hop to it because it takes about 14 days for your EIN to become active in the IRS’s system and your form could get rejected during that time.

4. How Do I file?

It’s easy! Head to ExpressTruckTax.com and follow the step-by-step e-filing guide to complete your form in 5 minutes or less. As a result, you will receive a copy of your stamped Schedule 1 within 15 minutes via email.

Are you out on a trip without access to a computer? Then download the ExpressTruckTax mobile app to your smartphone or tablet to file at any time, from any location. ExpresstruckTax is just as mobile as you are!

Or you could call TSNAmerica at 803.386.0320 to have a local, US-based representative file for you over the phone. It’s the quickest and most convenient way to file, all you have to do is answer a few questions to complete your Form 2290. After you finish filing a copy of your stamped Schedule 1 will be sent to your email.

Your HVUT Form 2290 is Due Next Thursday

0
Heavy Vehicle Use Tax Form 2290
What’s on your mind? The fact that it’s pretty hot and humid at this point during the summer, the fact that Labor Day is almost here to enjoy, or the fact that your Heavy Vehicle Use Tax (HVUT) Form 2290 is due by next Thursday, on August 31st?

If your mind isn’t on the deadline, then it should be, for at least 5 minutes, because that’s all it takes to quickly and conveniently file your Form 2290 with ExpressTruckTax in order to receive a copy of your stamped Schedule 1 via email within about 15 minutes, depending on IRS volume. Also, so you can become a HVUT expert we have put together a list of HVUT facts.

All About The HVUT

So what exactly is the HVUT? It is the tax assessed on the use of public highways by heavy vehicles with gross weights of 55,000 pounds or more. The taxes collected are used to repair, maintain, and build public highways.

You must file HVUT Form 2290 for every taxable highway motor vehicle that is required to be registered in your name under state, District of Columbia, Canadian, or Mexican law at the time of its first use period.

A taxable highway motor vehicle is one with a taxable gross weight of 55,000 pounds or more and includes any self-propelled vehicle designed to carry loads over public highways, regardless if it’s designed to perform other functions. A taxable vehicle consists of a chassis or a chassis and a body but does not include the load.

E-filing App For Form 2290 HVUT
The current HVUT tax period began on July 1, 2017, and will end on June 30, 2018. The HVUT is based on your first use month and is due by the last day of the month following the first use month. For example, if you first use your truck in October then your Form 2290 will be due by November 30th. Because a majority of truckers first use their trucks in July, the last day of the following month, which is August 31st is a huge deadline day.

As a result of filing your Form 2290, you will get a copy of your stamped Schedule 1 which serves as your proof of payment. It actually has a digital watermark stamp that includes the time that the IRS approved and accepted your Form 2290. Your stamped Schedule 1 is very important because you need it to register new vehicles and to renew your vehicle tags. Without it, you will be operating illegally.

Luckily filing Form 2290 is extremely easy and some of your information can be found on previous stamped Schedule 1s. All you need to file is your business name, address, and EIN (Employer Identification Number). For your vehicles, you need the VIN (Vehicle Identification Number) and taxable gross weight.

How to E-File Form 2290?

You can actually file Form 2290 in 5 minutes or less with ExpressTruckTax. Simply head to ExpressTruckTax.com or download the ExpressTruckTax app to your smartphone or tablet and follow the step-by-step e-filing guide to instantly complete your Form 2290. Then you will receive a copy of your stamped Schedule 1 via email within about 15 minutes.

For an even easier way to file call TSNAmerica at 803.386.0320 to have a US-based representative file for you. All you have to do is answer a few questions during a short phone call, then your filing process will be complete and you will receive your stamped Schedule 1 via email.

Forget to File Form 2290? You're Going to Face Penalties!

0
The clock is seriously ticking! Every time a moment passes then we are getting even closer to the
Heavy Vehicle Use Tax (HVUT) deadline on August 31st. You still have about two weeks to file, but don't wait. You should still file as soon as you can.

If you run into errors and your form gets rejected then you will be responsible for correcting your form and retransmitting it by the deadline. If your Form 2290 or HVUT payment is late you will have a few penalties to face.

HVUT Penalties

You may not receive a penalty for filing your return or paying the amount of HVUT tax you owe by the deadline if you are able to show reasonable cause for not filing or paying on time. If your file after the deadline be sure to attach an explanation to your return to show reasonable cause. The reasonable cause may then be accepted or rejected by the IRS.

Now the penalty for failing to file your HVUT IRS Form 2290 by the August 31 deadline is equal to 4.5% of the total tax due, and this penalty will accrue on a monthly basis for up to five months. The penalty for not making a HVUT payment is a monthly fee of .5% of the total tax due. You will also face an additional interest charge of .54% per month. This penalty can make the amount you owe increase pretty quickly.

Note: There are also penalties for filing fraudulent or false returns.

In addition to these federal penalties, your state may suspend your vehicle registration until you can provide proof of your HVUT payment. Your stamped Schedule 1 serves as your proof of payment, and you receive it by filing Form 2290. You need a stamped Schedule 1 to renew your tags and register new vehicles. Without it, you will be operating illegally.

How to File HVUT Form 2290?

Now that you know you really need to file your HVUT Form 2290 by the deadline, don’t panic. You can quickly and conveniently file right now by heading to ExpressTruckTax.com or by using the ExpressTruckTax App on your smartphone or tablet. All you have to do is follow the e-filing guide.

Either on the site or app, you will create your free ExpressTruckTax account with your email address. Then you will enter your business information like the name, address, and EIN (Employer Identification Number). Sole proprietors may use their personal information.

Then you will enter your tax year and first used month before entering your vehicle information, including the VIN (vehicle Identification Number) and the taxable gross weight. This is also where you will select if your vehicle was used for any special purposes such as logging, or agricultural use. Remember to include any suspended vehicles.

penalties for filing HUVT Form 2290 late
Next, we will accurately calculate how much HVUT you owe for you. Then you can directly pay that amount to the IRS through direct debit or electronic funds withdrawal, EFTPS, or check or money order.

After that, we will perform a basic audit check on your form to catch any basic errors. Also, we will present you with a summary of your information so you can make sure all of your information has been entered correctly. Once any corrections have been made you can sign your form with a 5-digit number of your choice, pay for it, and transmit it directly to the IRS.

Last but not least, you will receive a copy of your stamped Schedule 1 via email, within about 15 minutes of transmitting it. You can also elect to have it faxed, texted, or mailed anywhere it needs to go.

For an even easier way to file call TSNAmerica at 803.386.0320 to have one of their HVUT 2290 experts file for you, over the phone. With one quick call you will have your form filed and you will receive a copy of your stamped Schedule 1 via email.

Common Reasons for Form 2290 Rejections

0
As the HVUT deadline races towards us, it’s important to remember to give yourself enough time to file our Heavy Vehicle Use Tax 2290 Forms to make it by the August 31st deadline. If you wait until the last minute to file and your form is rejected then it’s up to you to correct it and retransmit it to the IRS in time, otherwise, you will face late filing penalties.

So why wait? Go ahead and use ExpressTruckTax to quickly and conveniently knock out your Form 2290 today and use the following tips about why 2290 forms are commonly rejected to get yours accepted the first time.

Why 2290 Forms Are Commonly Rejected

EIN Problems

You need an EIN or Employer Identification Number to complete your Form 2290. There’s no way around it. Once you place your SSN in place of your EIN on your form then it will instantly be rejected.

If you need an EIN go apply for one with the IRS now because it takes about two weeks for them to become updated in the IRS’s system and your form can get rejected during that time. Even though you’ll get your EIN instantly when you apply for one, you have to wait for it to become active before you can file.

You also need to make sure that your business information matches the information that you have on file for your EIN with the IRS. If they don’t match then your form could get rejected. You can verify your information with the IRS by calling 1-888-829-4933.

Your Form is a Duplicate

Each VIN (Vehicle Identification Number) can only be filed for once during the HVUT tax period. Duplicates will be rejected, so make sure that you’re filing for the current tax period which runs from July 1st, 2017 to June 30th, 2018. If you accidentally filed for the previous tax period then that could be why your form is considered a duplicate.

You also need to make sure that you enter your VIN correctly. If it’s one character off then your form could get rejected. If your form is rejected for this reason don’t panic, you can quickly and easily file free VIN corrections with ExpressTruckTax.

RTN Errors

You can pay the amount of HVUT you owe to the IRS through direct debit or electronic funds withdrawal, and that process involves providing your bank account number and RTN (Routing Transfer Number).

If you enter this information with as little as one character off the IRS will not be able to debit the funds and your form will be rejected. This is also the case if you do not have enough funds in your account to cover the full amount.

Enter your information, which can be found on one of your checks correctly. If your form is rejected for the incorrect RTN or insufficient funds simply edit your form and retransmit it or choose a different payment method.

When Filing Your Form 2290…

ExpressTruckTax is your best e-filing option. You can follow the step-by-step guide to instantly complete your form and receive a copy of your stamped Schedule 1 within about 15 minutes of filing. Plus, ExpressTruckTax makes it incredibly easy to file amendments, edit your form, make free VIN corrections, and more.

Also, with the ExpressTruckTax app, you can file from any location at any time right from your smartphone or tablet. Meaning you can file even if you’re out on a trip!

Another great way to instantly file is by calling TSNAmerica at 803.386.0320 to have a representative file for you, over the phone. By making one call you’ll have your 2290 filed and you will receive a copy of your stamped Schedule 1 via email.

Your HVUT Form 2290 Is Due This Month!

0
Sound the alarm, your Heavy Vehicle Use Tax (HVUT) Form 2290 is due this month! That means time is officially running out and you need to file by the August 31st deadline in order to avoid getting faced with major penalties.

However, you don’t have to panic, ExpressTruckTax, your number 1 Form 2290 e-file provider is here to help with a few tips for you to remember when you quickly and easily file.

2290 Filing Tips

1. Slow down and enter all of your information correctly to avoid having your form rejected over a simple typo. VINs (Vehicle Identification Numbers) for example, consist of 17 characters with both letters and numbers, so they can be easy to mix up. Plus, the font is usually pretty small and hard to read, so bust out your glasses if you need to.

The letters I, O, and Q are not found in VINs to prevent confusion. So an I is a 1 and an O is a 0. Also, there are no spaces in your VIN. If you need to correct your VIN don’t worry, ExpressTruckTax lets you quickly and easily make VIN corrections for free.

2. Go ahead and get your EIN (Employer Identification Number) now if you need one. If you don’t have one then you need to apply for one with the IRS online. Once you apply you’ll receive your new EIN number instantly, but that doesn’t mean you can use it yet. It takes about 15 days for your EIN to become updated in the IRS’s system and forms can get rejected during that time.

The clock is already ticking, soon you won’t be able to wait 15 days before the deadline for your EIN to become updated. The deadline will be here before you know it, so again, if you need an EIN, handle it today.

3. Double check your information. You will be presented with a summary of your information with ExpressTruckTax before transmitting your return to the IRS, just so that you can reread over all of your details and make sure that everything is correct.

If you enter your name incorrectly then your stamped Schedule 1 will have the wrong name and then the DMV won’t accept it as proof of payment. Then you will have to file and pay for your HVUT all over again to get a new stamped Schedule 1.

4. Remember, you are required to include your suspended vehicles on your 2290 Form. A suspended vehicle is a vehicle that is expected to be used for less than 5,000 miles (7,500 for agricultural vehicles) on public highways during the tax period. Suspended or credit vehicles also include vehicles that were lost, stolen, or destroyed.

Including these vehicles may work to your advantage because in some cases you can receive tax credits or a refund for them. If ExpressTruckTax sees that the amount of credit you have is greater than the amount of HVUT you owe then we will automatically generate Form 8849, the Claim for Refund of Excise Taxes Form for you, so you can get your money back from the IRS faster.

5. Instantly file online with ExpressTruckTax! It’s easy, follow the step-by-step e-filing guide to have your stamped Schedule 1 sent to you via email within about 15 minutes. You don’t even need a computer to file. With the ExpressTruckTax app on your smartphone or tablet to file at any time, from any location.

Or call TSNAmerica at 803.386.0320 to have a 2290 expert file over the phone for you. All you have to do is sit back and answer a few questions to instantly handle your 2290 needs. Plus, you’ll instantly get a copy of your stamped Schedule 1 via email.

CVSA's Operation Safe Driver Week is Coming

0
One thing that we can all agree on is that we want the roads to become a safer place with fewer accidents, so more hard working drivers can make it home to their families. That’s what CSVA (The Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance) is doing, by setting up annual safety checks to make sure drivers are operating safely and comply with the laws.

CSVA’s next safety check will take place during the week of October 15th - 21st, for Operation Safe Driver Week.

Operation Safe Driver Week

As a part of CVSA’s Operation Safe Driver Week law enforcement agencies from all across the nation will take part in increased traffic safety enforcement and make an effort to educate the masses on how to be safer drivers.

During the week if law enforcement personnel identify commercial motor vehicle (CMV) drivers or their passengers exhibiting unsafe behavior on the road they will issue them warnings or citations.

Examples of what law enforcement personnel will have their eyes out for include:

- Speeding
- Distracted driving
- Texting
- Failure to wear a seatbelt (for both drivers and passengers)
- Following too closely
- Improper lane changing
- Failure to obey traffic control devices, and more.

FMCSA has teamed up with CVSA to sponsor Operation Safe Driver Week, with tons of support from safety transportation organizations in the industry with the goal of improving road safety by addressing drivers operating unsafely on an individual basis.

This safety check was created to decrease the number of accidents, injuries, and deaths involving large passenger vehicles like trucks and buses due to unsafe driving habits and behaviors. Unfortunately, the leading cause of crashes among commercial motor vehicles are due to unsafe drivers, so it’s time for drivers to do their part to make the roads a safer place for all travelers.

What Can You Do To Be a Safer Driver?

You don’t have to wait until October to practice safer driving techniques. You can make a few simple changes to ensure safer passage for yourself and those around you today with a few simple things to remember.

- Get enough sleep! Driving tired is the equivalent to driving drunk. If you need a break, or to stop for a power nap, do it.

- Slow down! Obey the speed limits, they are there for a reason, and that’s to make the roads safer. Plus, driving a little slower will make you more fuel efficient.

- Not to sound like a Mom here, but wear your seatbelt all the time and make sure your passengers do too. Those little straps make a major difference when it comes to saving lives.

- Put down all electronic devices while you’re driving. When you use them you actually take your eyes off the road, which is very dangerous. If you get bored on the road try finding an entertaining trucking podcast or radio station to listen to before you start driving.

- Give other vehicles enough space on the road. If they come to a sudden stop, you will want to be able to stop in time too.

IRS Form 2290 HVUT Payment Options

0
Every minute the August 31 deadline for your Heavy Vehicle Use Tax Form 2290 creeps a little closer. It’s already the last week of July, and the deadline will be here before you know it, so be prepared to file. Also, be sure to keep in mind that not only do you need to file by the deadline, but you need to pay the amount of HVUT you owe by the deadline as well, and you have a few different payment options.

How to Pay Your HVUT?

While filing your 2290 with ExpressTruckTax you’ll follow a step-by-step guide to complete your form in a matter of minutes. Once you get to the IRS payment step you can choose between 3 different payment options based on the most convenient method for you.

1. Direct Debit or Electronic Funds Withdrawal (EFW), is the payment option where you provide your banking information (account and routing number) through ExpressTruckTax’s safe and secure system to authorize the IRS to debit the amount you owe from your bank account. It is important that your account has enough funds to cover the amount you owe.

The amount is generally withdrawn in 24 to 48 hours after providing authorization. Keep in mind that this involves your banking information, not your card number. The IRS will not accept credit cards.

If you need to cancel your payment contact IRS payment services at 1.888.353.4537 at least 2 days before the payment date.

2. EFTPS (Electronic Federal Tax Payment System) is the electronic tax payment system used by the IRS. If you choose this payment option you will be taken to the EFTPS site, and you’ll create a free account.

In order to pay the IRS through EFTPS, you will provide your bank account information and verify that the IRS is allowed to withdraw your tax payment from that account. In order to make your payment by the deadline, you must schedule it before 8 p.m. the day before the deadline for it to be received by the IRS in time.

3. You can also pay the amount of HVUT you owe with a Check or Money Order. If you choose this option you will need to print your completed payment voucher, 2290-V, from page 5 of your completed 2290 Form and mail to the IRS.

Make your check or money order payable to the United States Treasury. Also, you will need to include your name, address, EIN, the date, and the words “IRS Form 2290” with your payment. Do not staple your payment and voucher together.

Remember, never send cash through the mail.

Send your payment and voucher 2290-V to:

Internal Revenue Service,
P.O. Box 804525,
Cincinnati,
OH 45280-4525.

Important: If you have already paid your HVUT via Direct Debit or EFW and received a letter from the IRS saying they were unable to debit the funds there are a few likely causes:

- Your account and routing number were entered into ExpressTruckTax incorrectly. Even entering one character incorrectly will prevent the IRS from being able to withdraw the amount you owe.

- The IRS tried to debit your account, but you had insufficient funds. If you are even as little as 50 cents short then the IRS will not debit the funds.

If you receive a letter from the IRS saying they could not withdraw the funds from the bank account provided then you will need to send a check or money order to the IRS in order to pay the amount you owe by the August 31st deadline.

AMX Shares How to Safely Share the Road with a Semi

0
AMX, Alabama Motor Express, has kindly shared facts about how to share the road with semis in order to make the roads a safer place with ExpressTruckTax. Be sure to pass this important safety information along!

We’ve all been on a highway waiting on a semi to pass in the left lane thinking, “Why is this taking so long??”

Sharing the road with a big rig is inevitable these days. After all, there are 5.6 million tractor trailers registered for use in the U.S.

But, there are ways to make things better and safer for all parties involved.

We can start by understanding a few things about semi trucks.

According to a blog by Nationwide, due to their size:

- Their blind spot is bigger
- They need more space to maneuver
- They require more time and distance to stop
- It takes more time to pass them

NEVER ride alongside them. First, they have a large blind spot on their sides. Second, semis are notorious for blowing tires. At worst, a blown tire can knock you off the road. At the very least, the sound (as loud as a gunshot) can scare you, maybe even enough to make you lose control of your vehicle. Third, semis have a lot of surface area. Getting blown around by the wind is a real risk that can result in drifting into your lane.

Always pass them on the left side. If they’re in the left lane, it’s for a reason. Either they’re passing a slower car, an emergency vehicle is on the right side or there is road work requiring left lane travel.

When passing them, try and give them a decent amount of space before you get back in the right lane. A good rule of thumb is to wait until you can see the pavement in front of the bumper. They need to leave a wide berth in order to have enough time to brake if something were to happen. And, you do NOT want to be in front of an eighteen wheeler when he/she doesn't have enough space to brake.

If you see a truck's turn signal, do your best to get out of the way by either speeding up or slowing down to let him/her pass. Of course, we are all trying to get off the road as fast as possible, but being on the road is their livelihood. And, usually, if you are polite to them, they'll be polite to you.

Truck drivers spend a ton of time on the road with four-wheelers. And, accidents between a car and a tractor trailer can be fatal. According to statistics from Women In Trucking, 79% of all accidents involving semi-trucks are caused by car drivers.

Avoiding an accident with an eighteen wheeler is always a good idea. Let's share the road in a way that gets us all there safely.

0

We know that you’ve been working hard this summer, putting miles on the pavement, but if you find yourself passing through Iowa then it’s time to take a break at the Iowa 80 Truckstop for the 38th annual Walcott Truckers Jamboree. It’s gonna be a honking good time Y'all. You deserve a break to celebrate what you do for the economy by delivering essential goods all across the nation. Plus, tons of fellow members of the trucking industry and their families will be there as well!

Truckers Jamboree

The Truckers Jamboree is taking place from July 13th-July 15th this year and it’s hosted at the Iowa 80 Truckstop off of I-80 exit 284 in Walcott Iowa. This event started in 1979 in order to celebrate America’s truckers and is still going strong as a great place to be if you want to celebrate and learn about trucking.

While the event is a good time and an educational experience, at the end of the day it’s a way to thank truckers for all that they do. Heck, everything important to you from your first cup of coffee in the morning to your comfortable bedding at the end of the day was most likely on a truck at one point.

If you can’t make the event you should still put the Iowa 80 Truckstop on your list of places to go, because it is the largest truck stop in the world. It’s pretty much a trucker’s heaven filled with every service you could ask for, some of which, like the dogomat are open for 24 hours a day! You can get your pet groomed, get a haircut, go to the dentist, watch a movie, and more all at the same truck stop!

However, If you can make it to the jamboree then bring your sunscreen and prepare for one large action packed outdoor event. The event is so big that you’re allowed to bring your own golf cart to ride around the premises! Switching from a big rig to a golf cart almost sounds like a vacation of its own.

What exactly can you look forward to at this event? First of all, FREE admission and FREE parking, so why not check it out? Then there are a ton of events to check out, like an antique truck display, the super trucks beauty contest, trucker Olympics, and the Iowa pork chop cookout. Yeah, a pork chop cookout, so take a break from your trucking diet and enjoy.

There will also be tons exhibitors for you to visit and learn about what they do for the industry. You can relax in the evening with free country music concerts performed by Mary Sarah and Collin Raye. For the kids, there are carnival games and fireworks. There’s something for the whole family!

After the Jamboree and you get back to trucking remember that the Heavy Vehicle Use Tax deadline is approaching on August 31st so don’t forget to file your 2290 with your industry leader, ExpressTruckTax. All you have to do is spend about 10 minutes following the simple e-filing guide to transmit your form directly to the IRS and you’ll receive your stamped Schedule 1 via email within about 15 minutes.

Know Your 2290 Vehicle Types: Suspended, Agricultural, Logging, Etc.

0
With the Heavy Vehicle Use Tax Form 2290 deadline on August 31st quickly approaching we’re here to help with tips about the filing process, and where you can find some savings. We don’t want you to pay more than you have to. Plus, we want you to get the highest amount of credits that you can to claim a refund!

That’s why we’re discussing the different types of 2290 vehicles today. Some are subject to lower tax rates, will give you credits, and are even exempt from the HVUT all together!

2290 Vehicles

It’s important to be aware that all of your qualifying highway motor vehicles with a taxable gross weight of over 55,000 pounds or more must be reported on your Form 2290. The weight includes the vehicle’s chassis or the chassis and body, but not the load.

Qualifying vehicles include any self-propelled vehicles that are designed to carry loads on public highways, regardless if they’re designed to perform other functions or not. A few examples of other functions include being designed to carry special good or supplies, to carry passengers, or to carry permanently mounted equipment.

Logging Vehicle

This one is pretty simple. A logging vehicle is one that is exclusively used for the transportation of products like timber (logs) harvested from forested sites, or it exclusively transports products harvested from the site to and from locations within the forested site.

It’s important to list your vehicle as a logging one if it qualifies because logging vehicles are subject to lower tax rates than other heavy vehicles. Just keep in mind that your vehicle must be registered as a vehicle exclusively used for logging accordingly to the applicable vehicle registration laws in your state.

Agricultural Vehicles

Agricultural vehicles are any highway motor vehicles that are used or expected to be used primarily for farming purposes. They must be registered under state laws are a highway motor vehicle used for farming purposes during the entire tax period.

A qualifying agricultural vehicle is one that is used for farming purposes for over half of the vehicle's use, based on mileage, during the tax period. These vehicles also require special tags or license plates to identify them as agricultural vehicles and are considered to be different from logging vehicles.

Agricultural vehicles count as suspended or credit vehicles if they’re used for fewer than 7,500 miles during the tax period.

Suspended Vehicles

A suspended or credit vehicle is a highway motor vehicle that is expected to travel less than 5,000 miles or less (7,500 miles or less for agricultural vehicles) during the tax period. This mileage limit applies to the total amount of miles it’s driven on the road, regardless of the number of owners.

Other suspended or credit vehicles include those that were sold, destroyed, or stolen and they must all be reported on your 2290. If they exceed the mileage limit during the tax period then you’ll owe HVUT for them.

While e-filing Form 2290 if ExpressTruckTax sees that your credit amount exceeds the amount of HVUT you owe then we will auto generate Form 8849 for you, so you can claim a refund or credit on the amount you paid to the IRS for these vehicles.

Exempt Vehicles

Vehicles that are exempt from the HVUT don’t need to be filed for, regardless of how many miles they travel. They’re 100% exempt from the Heavy Vehicle Use Tax! A few HVUT exempt vehicles include qualified blood collector vehicles, mobile machinery used for non-transportation purposes, heavy vehicles used by the federal government, and more.

Now that you know where you can save based on what type of vehicles you have head to ExpressTruckTax.com to quickly e-file your Form 2290 and get your stamped Schedule 1 via email instantly. You can also call TSNAmerica at 803.386.0320 to have a representative file for you over the phone.

Get Your Stamped Schedule 1 Today

0
What a day to be a trucker! The IRS is now officially processing Heavy Vehicle Use Tax (HVUT) 2290 returns! That means you can file today and instantly receive a copy of your stamped Schedule 1 via email in about 15 minutes.

Why wait to file when ExpressTruckTax makes it extremely easy to file your 2290 return in just a few minutes? The process is simple, check out the e-filing instructions below.

How to File Your 2290 With ExpressTruckTax

Step 1: You begin by creating your free account with expressTruckTax using your email address and personal password. Then in the dashboard, you’ll see the exclusive ExpressTruckTax wallet feature where you can purchase prepaid filing credits at a 10% discount.

Step 2: When you’re ready to file click the orange ‘Start New Return’ button and enter the basic information for your business such as the name, address, and EIN or Employer Identification number. Remember, you need an EIN to file and can apply for one with the IRS online. It will take about two weeks for it to update in the IRS’s system.

Step 3: Then you’ll enter your tax year and your vehicle’s first used month. Form 2290 is filed based on your vehicles first used month and is due the last day of the month after it’s first used month. For example, if you first use your vehicle in April then your Form 2290 is due on May 31st. Then you’ll file annually by the August 31st deadline.

The current tax period runs from July 1st, 2017 until June 30th, 2018, and your schedule 1 for the 2016-2017 season expired on June 30th, 2017.

Step 4: Next you’ll enter information for your vehicle including the Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) and taxable gross weight. You’ll also select if your vehicle was used for any special purposes such as logging or agricultural uses. Remember suspended vehicles must be filed for as well.

Step 5: Relax as we calculate how much you’ll owe the IRS for you, so you’ll know exactly how much to pay. Then select one of the following payment options to pay the IRS: Direct Debit or Electronic Funds Withdrawal, EFTPS, Check or Money Order.

Step 6: You’ll be presented with a summary of your information to make sure all of your information was entered correctly. VINs for example, are the number one Form 2290 mistake. Then our system will perform audit check on your form to catch any basic errors.

Step 7: Once any corrections have been made and you’re ready to transmit your form directly to the IRS enter a 5-digit code of your choice at the bottom of the form to electronically sign and transmit it.

Step 8: Do your happy dance because depending on IRS volume in about 10 to 15 minutes you’ll receive a copy of your stamped Schedule 1 via email. You can also elect to receive a copy via text and postal mail.

The sooner you file then the sooner your 2290 return will be processed, approved, or rejected depending on IRS volume. So, we encourage you to file as soon as possible with ExpressTruckTax to beat the rush. We also have a few reminders for you to keep in mind as you prepare to file.

HVUT 2290 Reminders

- If you own a heavy vehicle with a taxable gross weight of 55,000 pounds or more then you’re required by law to file your HVUT Form 2290 in order to get a copy of your stamped Schedule 1, which serves as your proof of payment. You must file for all taxable highway motor vehicles that are required to be registered in your name under state, District of Columbia, Canadians, or Mexican law.

- For new vehicles, your Form 2290 is due on the last day of the month after your first use month. For example, if you first use your new truck in October then your 2290 would be due on November 31st. Then you will renew it annually by the August 31st deadline. Your schedule 1 for the previous tax period will expire on June 30th.

- In order to complete your 2290 Form you need your business name, and address (your personal details will work if you’re a sole proprietor), and EIN (Employer Identification Number). For your vehicle you’ll need your first use month, VIN (Vehicle Identification Number), taxable gross weight, and be sure to include if your vehicle was used for any special purposes such as logging or agricultural uses.

- Suspended vehicles must be included when you file. A suspended vehicle is one that is expected to be used for 5,000 miles or less (7,500 miles for agricultural vehicles). Suspended or credit vehicles also include ones that were destroyed, stolen, or sold.

- You have to file your Form 2290 and you have to pay your HVUT to the IRS. Your payment options include direct debit or electronic funds withdrawal (EFW), EFTPS (Electronic Federal Tax Payment System) or check or money order.

- You can file over the phone! Just give TSNAmerica a call at 803.386.0320 to have a US-based representative file your 2290 for you, over the phone. That’s right, you can handle your 2290 with one phone call. As a result, you’ll receive a copy of your stamped Schedule 1 via email in about 15 minutes.

Save Money On Your Form 2290

0
You know what's a good practice in the trucking industry? Penny-pinching! Saving anywhere you can really help out in the long run, and can actually make or break fleets trying to emerge into the market. Unfortunately, with the Heavy Vehicle Use Tax (HVUT) Form 2290 deadline you’ll have to pay the amount you owe or face hefty penalties. But don't worry, we know a few ways to save on your HVUT.

Use These Tips To Save On Your 2290:

1. Take Advantage of Our Wallet Feature

Before filing your HVUT Form 2290 see how many forms you actually need to file because with ExpressTruckTax you can purchase prepaid credits through their exclusive wallet feature. Each credit provides a 10% discount off of your filing fee, so the more credits you buy, the more you save. Don’t worry about purchasing more credits than you need, because they never expire and can be used next season.

The credits save you time and money because instead of having to hunt down your wallet and enter in all of your card information, you can conveniently use your prepaid credit to pay for your form.

To purchase prepaid credits log into your free ExpressTruckTax account and you’ll see your wallet in the top right corner. Click the orange ‘Buy’ button to purchase the number of credits you need.

2. Get A Refund Or Credit With Form 8849

After you file Form 2290 and pay the amount of HVUT that you owe you can file Form 8849, the Refund or Claim of Excise taxes form, which is used to claim refunds or credits on suspended vehicles and vehicles that were sold, stolen, or destroyed.

Suspended or credit vehicles are vehicles that don’t exceed 5,000 miles (7,500 miles for agricultural vehicles) during the current tax period.

While filing your Form 2290 with ExpressTruckTax if your credit vehicles exceed the amount of HVUT you owe then Form 8849 will automatically be generated for you, and all you need to file is your name, address, and EIN. You’ll also need the information for your vehicle that you’re claiming a refund on, including details as to why, if your vehicle was lost, stolen, or destroyed, and the date that the incident occurred.

3. Avoid Penalties By Filing on Time

If you file late you could face a penalty of 4.5% of the tax due. To make matters worse that amount collects on a monthly basis for up to 5 months! Also, if you don’t pay the amount you owe then you’ll face another penalty of 0.5% of the amount owed per month. You’ll really save by filing on on time.

If you wait until just days before the deadline you could run into a problem that causes your form to be rejected and then counted as late if you can’t fix it by the deadline. For example, if you enter the wrong VIN or Vehicle Identification Number, or wait too late to apply for an EIN or Employer Identification Number your form could get rejected.

Luckily ExpressTruckTax makes it easy to fix any mistakes. If your form is rejected you’ll be notified almost immediately with notes as to why. Then you can easily make Form 2290 amendments, retransmit your forms to the IRS, and make free VIN corrections at any time. The sooner your pre-file, the sooner you’ll learn if your form has been rejected or accepted.

How To Pre-file?

You can create your free ExpressTruckTax account to access our step-by-step 2290 e-filing guide to complete your form in a matter of minutes today. Then as soon as the IRS stamps your Schedule 1 you’ll receive a copy via email. You don't even need a computer to file, download the free ExpressTruckTax App to file on your smartphone or tablet from any location.

Also, you can call TSNAmerica at 803.386.0320 to speak with a representative who will pre-file your 2290 for you, over the phone. How does it get any easier than that? Plus, you’ll get a copy of your stamped Schedule 1 via email.

2290s And EINs: Everything You Need To Know

0
The Heavy Vehicle Use Tax season is coming right at us at full speed! You can try to jump out of the way, but you’ll still need to file your Form 2290 by the August 31st deadline. Don’t let the deadline run you over. Be prepared and file as soon as possible to avoid having your form rejected. For example, it’s very important to know that you’re required to have an EIN.

What to Remember About Your EIN?

Your EIN or your Employer Identification Number is also known as the Federal Tax Identification Number and the Federal Employer Identification Number or FEIN. EINs are assigned to businesses operating in the United States in order to identify them for tax reporting purposes. Each EIN consists of a unique 9 digit number.

This is important because you are required by the IRS to have an EIN to complete your 2290. They need it to identify you to correctly verify that you’re filing for yourself and to prevent fraud.

There may be some confusion when it comes to EINs and Social Security Numbers (SSN) because they’re both 9 digit identification codes. However, EINs are used to identify businesses, and social security numbers are used to identify individuals. Also, the IRS used to accept SSNs in place of EINs on Form 2290s, but that is no longer the case. If you use your SSN in the EIN field your form will be rejected.

Also, when it comes to the information on your 2290 such as your business name and address, it will need to match what the IRS has on file or it could be rejected. You can see if your information matches what the IRS has on file by contacting the IRS directly at (800) 829-4933.

If you don’t have an EIN you can apply for online for free with the IRS here. Once you finish applying you will instantly receive your 9 digit EIN, but please keep in mind that it will take about 15 days for your EIN to update in the IRS’s system and your 2290 could be rejected during this time.

Each EIN is is a unique code that never expires. However, as a sole proprietor you may need a new EIN if you’re subject to a bankruptcy proceeding, you incorporate, you take in new partners and operate as a partnership, or you purchase or inherit an existing business.

How To File Your 2290?

Why wait when you can go ahead and knock out your 2290 today? Go ahead and file online with ExpressTruckTax or the ExpressTruckTax App now. Simply follow the step-by-step filing guide to instantly complete your form. As a result, your Form 2290 will be transmitted directly to the IRS and you'll get your stamped Schedule 1 in about 15 minutes.

You can also call TSNAmerica at 803.386.0320 to file your Form 2290 today over the phone. Simply give them a call and an outstanding US-based representative will file your 2290 for you! It’s that easy. Plus, you will instantly get a copy of your stamped Schedule 1 via email.

Don’t wait until the last minute and find yourself in a pickle. Instead, go ahead and pre-file to knock out your Heavy Vehicle Use Tax Form 2290 today.

Reasons to Pre-File 2290

Just like with all of your other taxes if you don’t pay for or file your Heavy Vehicle Use Tax Form 2290 by the deadline you will face fees and penalties imposed by the IRS. If you don’t file because you can’t pay the amount you owe, consider getting a credit card or small loan to cover it, because the longer you wait, the more you’ll owe.

For example, the initial penalty for filing late is 4.5% of the tax due, and this accrues on a monthly basis for up to five months. Also, if you don’t pay your tax due you’ll face an additional penalty of .05% of the total amount you owe with an interest charge of .54% per month. That can make the amount you owe quickly skyrocket.

Some authorities will revoke your license if they find out you failed to file before the deadline. However, most states are a little lenient towards first-time offenders.

You Want Time to Fix Mistakes and Prepare

Some people don’t realize that they need an EIN or Employer Identification Number to file. You can get one by applying online with the IRS, but it will take about 15 days to become active in the system. During that 15 days, your form could get rejected! If you wait too close to the deadline before getting your EIN then you’ll miss it!

Plus, what happens if your form gets rejected for a simple mistake like an incorrect VIN? By pre-filing, you’ll know sooner if you’ve made a mistake that you need to correct on your form. With an e-file provider like ExpressTruckTax, you’ll be notified as to why your form was rejected so you can quickly fix any errors and retransmit your form. They even make it easy to amend your form and offer free VIN corrections.

You Want Your Stamped Schedule 1 Sooner

The longer you wait to file, the busier the IRS gets. When the IRS gets backed up they’ll take longer to stamp your Schedule 1 and send it back to you. Plus, if you file the old conventional paper way, you’ll have to wait for it to come in the mail.

Speed things up by pre-filing. Your Form 2290 will be transmitted directly to the IRS when they begin accepting returns. Then the IRS will stamp your Schedule 1 and you’ll instantly receive a copy via email. You can also choose to receive a copy via text or fax to get your carrier and the DMV off your back.

How to Pre-File?

Pre-Filing is incredibly simple. Just go to ExpressTruckTax.com and follow their step-by-step guide to file in a matter of minutes. The guide tells you exactly what information to enter and where. ExpressTruckTax also calculates the amount of Heavy Vehicle Use Tax you owe for you.

You could also call TSNAmerica at 803.386.0320 to pre-file for you, over the phone. That’s right, we said pre-file for you. This is the fewer hands on approach. It doesn’t matter which pre-filing option you choose, your information will still be transmitted to the IRS when they begin accepting returns, and you’ll get a copy of your stamped Schedule 1 almost immediately.
