Common Reasons for Form 2290 Rejections

0
As the HVUT deadline races towards us, it’s important to remember to give yourself enough time to file our Heavy Vehicle Use Tax 2290 Forms to make it by the August 31st deadline. If you wait until the last minute to file and your form is rejected then it’s up to you to correct it and retransmit it to the IRS in time, otherwise, you will face late filing penalties.

So why wait? Go ahead and use ExpressTruckTax to quickly and conveniently knock out your Form 2290 today and use the following tips about why 2290 forms are commonly rejected to get yours accepted the first time.

Why 2290 Forms Are Commonly Rejected

EIN Problems

You need an EIN or Employer Identification Number to complete your Form 2290. There’s no way around it. Once you place your SSN in place of your EIN on your form then it will instantly be rejected.

If you need an EIN go apply for one with the IRS now because it takes about two weeks for them to become updated in the IRS’s system and your form can get rejected during that time. Even though you’ll get your EIN instantly when you apply for one, you have to wait for it to become active before you can file.

You also need to make sure that your business information matches the information that you have on file for your EIN with the IRS. If they don’t match then your form could get rejected. You can verify your information with the IRS by calling 1-888-829-4933.

Your Form is a Duplicate

Each VIN (Vehicle Identification Number) can only be filed for once during the HVUT tax period. Duplicates will be rejected, so make sure that you’re filing for the current tax period which runs from July 1st, 2017 to June 30th, 2018. If you accidentally filed for the previous tax period then that could be why your form is considered a duplicate.

You also need to make sure that you enter your VIN correctly. If it’s one character off then your form could get rejected. If your form is rejected for this reason don’t panic, you can quickly and easily file free VIN corrections with ExpressTruckTax.

RTN Errors

You can pay the amount of HVUT you owe to the IRS through direct debit or electronic funds withdrawal, and that process involves providing your bank account number and RTN (Routing Transfer Number).

If you enter this information with as little as one character off the IRS will not be able to debit the funds and your form will be rejected. This is also the case if you do not have enough funds in your account to cover the full amount.

Enter your information, which can be found on one of your checks correctly. If your form is rejected for the incorrect RTN or insufficient funds simply edit your form and retransmit it or choose a different payment method.

How To Pay Your 2290 Tax When E-filing

0

Taxes aren’t very much fun, even though when we pay some of them like the HVUT the money goes to repairing and improving our highways giving us a smoother ride, and preventing wear and tear on our rigs. That’s all great and all, but you still have to pay the tax yourself, so make sure you’re up to date on exactly how to pay it.

How To Pay Your 2290 HVUT

Form 2290 is used to pay your HVUT or heavy vehicle use tax. If you’re in a highway motor vehicle that has a taxable gross weight of 55,000 pounds or more then you have to file e-file a HVUT 2290 form in order to get a copy of your Stamped Schedule 1. E-file means electronically filing online.

A highway motor vehicle includes vehicles that are designed to carry loads over public highways, whether they were also designed to perform other functions or not and that are self-propelled. These vehicles generally include buses, tractor trailers, and large trucks. Vans and pickup trucks tend to weigh less than 55,000 pounds.

The weight only includes the vehicle and it’s chassis or body, not it’s load. The type of load doesn’t matter either, the vehicle can be designed to passengers, supplies, or cargo.

Also, a public highway includes any road in the United States that isn’t private, including city, county, state and federal roads.

Your form 2290 is due the last day of the 2nd month after you first use your new qualifying vehicle. For example, if you first start driving a new qualifying vehicle in February then your Form 2290 would be due by March 31st. Also, the form 2290 needs to be renewed annually by August 31st.

When you file your form 2290 you have to pay your HVUT and you have a few different options for doing that.

You can pay with EFW or Electronic Fund Withdrawal, which is the option offered when you e-file your federal taxes with the use of IRS authorized preparation software, like ExpressTruckTax, or through a tax professional.

With EFW you enter in your bank account information to the IRS’s safe and secure payment system and the tax amount you owe is withdrawn from your bank account usually within 24 to 48 hours of submitting your payment.

Another payment option you have is to pay with the EFTPS or Electronic Federal Tax Payment System. If you select that option you will be taken to the EFTPS site. EFTPS is the free safe and secure payment system that’s offered by the U.S. Department of the Treasury.

To use the EFTPS you will need to create a free account, enter your bank account information, and verify it because this payment system works by withdrawing the funds you owe from your bank account.

Also, you have the 3rd option of mailing a check or money order to the IRS directly. Just make sure that the check or money order is payable to the U.S. Treasury and includes your name, address, EIN, “IRS form 2290”, and the date. Do not send cash.

If you choose to send a check or money order you’ll need to print the payment voucher 2290 -V, or page 5 of your 2290 and include it with your payment. Don’t staple your payment to your form 2990 or payment voucher.

Send Your Payment and voucher to:

Internal Revenue Service,
P.O. Box 804525,
Cincinnati,
OH 45280-4525.

Exceeding the Mileage Limit: E-filing Form 2290 Amendments

0
E-Filing Form 2290 Amendments
E-Filing Form 2290 Amendments
As we move further away from 2290 deadline season, it becomes more clear that filers might need to make amendments, corrections, and changes to the 2290’s they’ve already filed.

Of course, we’re not going to cover all of those corrections that can be made in one post. As part of our ongoing discussion about e-filing Form 2290 Amendments, we’re focusing on what to do when you Exceed the Mileage Use Limit.

Mileage Limits on IRS Form 2290

Mileage use limit for a heavy vehicle on public highways is 5,000 miles (or) less (7,500 miles (or) less for agricultural vehicles). The mileage use limit applies to the total mileage a vehicle is on the road during a period, regardless of the number of owners.

Just like when we talked about VIN corrections, ExpressTruckTax has an option for those who exceed the mileage use limit.

Exceeding the Limit

What should you do when your suspended vehicles exceeds the mileage use limit?

It’s not unusual for a suspended vehicle to exceed its mileage use limit, which is why the IRS allows you to file an amendment if your vehicle exceeds the mileage use limit.

So how do you do it? Traditionally, you to need to calculate the tax on Form 2290, page 2, based on the month the vehicle was first used in the period. After that, you file the amended Form 2290 and Schedule 1 by the last day of the month following the month in which the mileage use limit was exceeded.

However, if you want to file your amendment fast, login to ExpressTruckTax.com, where it's easy to file a mileage limit amendment and accurately calculate the tax due to IRS. Best of all, you will get your Schedule 1 for the new claim within minutes.

If you’ve e-filed with us before, you can select that return from our system. We also accept new filers, as well.

If you have questions about e-filing a 2290 amendment, please call us at 704.234.6005 - we're here ready to answer your call in Rock Hill, SC, Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.

File HVUT Error Free with ExpressTruckTax
If there’s one thing we know about tax time, it’s how stressful it can be. With deadlines everywhere, it almost feels like you’re racing the clock to get everything done.

Which is why we also know, plenty of filers out there make mistakes. Sometimes it's the wrong vehicle identification number (VIN), which can go unnoticed until it’s too late.

Of course, sometimes you file and think everything is fine, only to find out your return has been rejected.

So what should you do? Well, at ExpressTruckTax, we make sure that our e-filing customers have a few safety lines in the IRS Form 2290 game.

This is pretty straightforward - we have implemented a system that allows our current year e-filers to come back and file a FREE VIN correction. That’s right, free! Trust us, it’s a lot better than correcting your VIN at an IRS office.

If you didn’t file Form 2290, but you need to file a correction, it’s only a small fee using our system. Don’t make that mistake twice!

We also offer Form 2290 Amendments for increase in vehicle weight and suspended vehicles exceeding their mileage.

Audit Check BEFORE Filing

By reviewing your errors before we transmit, you won’t have your return rejected right off the bat.

Free Re-Filing for Rejected Returns

Oops! It’s Time to File a VIN Correction

0
VIN Correction
File VIN Correction
We hear it all the time—you decided to get things done fast this year, so you e-file Form 2290 early. But once your stamped Schedule 1 comes in, you see that your VIN is way off. What can you do? Well, the easy answer is e-file a VIN correction!

Added Tax From Increase in Taxable Gross Weight

If your vehicle’s taxable gross weight increases during the period, and your vehicle falls in a new tax category, you need to file an amendment. We let you file for amendments with the same easy-to-use system you filed your 2290 with.

Suspended Vehicles Exceeding the Mileage use Limit

If a suspended vehicle exceeds the mileage use limit, they need to file form 2290 amendment. The mileage use limit for a heavy vehicle on public highways is 5,000 miles or less (7,500 miles or less for agricultural vehicles). The mileage use limit applies to the total mileage a vehicle is on the road during a period, regardless of the number of owners.

VIN Correction

If you made a mistake on a VIN when you filed Form 2290, you need to file a Form 2290 VIN correction. You can only file a VIN correction for taxable (or) suspended vehicles, and not for credit vehicles or for prior year suspended vehicles. The wrong VIN must have been paid for in the original form 2290, or the IRS will penalize you while still requiring the actual tax.

Don’t forget, we offer FREE 2290 VIN corrections for any filer who e-filed their 2290 return with us here at ExpressTruckTax!

If you didn't e-file your 2290 with us, but you still need to e-file a VIN correction, have no fear! You still have a chance, you just have to pay a small fee.

So when you need to e-file form 2290 VIN corrections, head over to ExpressTruckTax and we’ll make sure you’re taken care of.

Basically, you need to keep filing until you get things right.

When you e-file your 2290 with ExpressTruckTax, you receive your Schedule 1, which shows an IRS e-file watermark with the date the return was received and processed. This will be accepted by all DOT’s, DMV’s, and other federal authorities.

ExpressTruckTax automatically emails the stamped Schedule 1 after the IRS accepts your 2290. We can also send you updates via text and fax–plus we can even notify your company/carrier.

Your stamped Schedule 1 counts as your proof of payment.

What if you e-filed your tax form 2290 and then something changes—like your vehicle weight?

E-File 2290s at the Right Price!

0
E-File 2290s at the Right Price!
E-File 2290s at the Right Price!
2290 - seems like the magic number everyone has been talking about since last month, the month before that, this month, and next month.

But a 2290 is something that as a trucker–whether you’re a greenhorn or an experienced road warrior - you should know.

And no, “2290” isn't code for a rest stop or a crazy four-wheeler switching lanes every ten seconds. It’s a number - by that we mean a tax form - designated by the glorious moguls of the IRS to name the Heavy Vehicle Use Tax that all truckers have to pay each year.

When it comes to filing and paying this tax, there are a lot of options out there.
  • You could stand in a long line at the IRS office, only to get turned away when you don’t have all of the information you need.
  • You could fill out the form yourself and then mail it, along with your money, to the IRS.
  • Or, you could use the most-trusted e-file provider of 2290s, ExpressTruckTax, and never have to leave the comfort of your home or truck.

4 HVUT Errors You’ve Already Made

2
Sure, Heavy Vehicle Use Taxes aren’t due until August, but do you know the most common errors?

While we have audit and error checks built into ExpressTruckTax, there are always a some user-end errors you need to watch out for.

The last thing you want is for one to slip by the cracks and go unnoticed until it’s too late!

Hopefully you haven’t made any of these, but we will do our best to guide you through these troubled waters.

Your VIN Was Mistyped

Honestly, this is one of the most common errors we hear about. With vehicle identification numbers being a 17-digit string of characters, who can be blamed?

Since these codes are frequently entered wrong, we know that plenty of truckers have to deal with this.

Now, really this is between you and the IRS, because you might file with the wrong VIN and never know. Yeah, that’ll be bad if you need to present your schedule 1 to some aspect of the law.

And don’t forget, your VIN numbers will never contain an O, I, or Q, unless the truck is over 20 years old.

So if you entered the wrong VIN and filed with ExpressTruckTax, log back in and get a free VIN correction. If you didn’t file with us, you can still file for a VIN correction after paying a small fee.

You Are Paper Filing… Because It's the Stone Age

Sorry, we kid. We are a little gung-ho about e-filing, so we like to rag on paper every now and then.

But really, paper filing puts you and your trucking profession in unnecessary danger. The error rate on typical paper filing sits around 21%, while e-filing is less than 1%.

What other reasons should you e-file? I dunno, you hate doing paperwork by hand, and you’re not a mathematician. That counts for us, at least.

Plus you will get your stamped Schedule 1 in minutes.

You Don't Need a New 2290, You Paid on Your Old Truck

Oh yeah, you paid. For your last truck, not your new one!

Just because you have 2290s for your old vehicle, doesn’t mean you’re set on your new one. The IRS does not believe in a 1-1 truck transference, so you can’t either.

That means you need to register your new truck like you would your old one, except you e-file your 2290 based on the first month you use it.

Speaking of First Month

If you bought your truck this year, you will have a first used month unique to the purchase at a prorated amount.

Basically, you’re only charged from the first month you use the truck instead of your typical July/August filing date.

Since August is the deadline, you will still have to pay that deadline, even if you bought your truck in May or June.

Don’t make this common mistake! And if you did, it’s better to file late than never.

And One More, as a Bonus…

You’re not e-filing with ExpressTruckTax! With our built-in error checks, easy to use e-filing system, and Truck Zone business center, you have plenty of reasons to e-file with us.

Plus you get your stamped Schedule 1 in minutes, so you can get back on the road in no time.

If you have any questions, give us a call at 704.234.6005. Or shoot us an email at Support@ExpressTruckTax.com.

Are YOU making these 2290 errors?

Don't Make These Mistakes When Buying a New Truck

0
We made it through winter, and Spring is upon us. Goodbye dangerous, icy roads!

And not only are plants springing up from the ground, but truckers are thinking, “Hey, why don’t I get rid of my old rig and buy a new one?”

And we’re right there with you, Trucking Nation. Sometimes it’s better to just say goodbye to that old truck and hit the road on something shiny and new (to you, at least).

But beware, there are mistakes you can make when you purchase a new vehicle!

So we’ve thrown together a few tips to help you avoid those new truck-buying mistakes.

Don't Blow Your Budget

Factor in how you are using the truck, your distance traveled, and even what you will be hauling. The last thing you want is to drop all your cash on a beast of a truck and discover that you’re not even using it right.

And we know you don’t want to buy something that can barely haul an empty flatbed. So list out your truck requirements AND your expected uses on a sheet of paper, on your phone, or anywhere you can keep track.

From this list, create a BUDGET. Allow yourself time to look over it and figure out what you want to buy.

And don’t go into any purchase blind! Calculate the costs you’ll incur for the purchase, as well as your insurance, taxes, and all the accoutrement (that’s French for extra stuff).

You should probably aim your budget forward, too. You’ll need to factor in your cost of maintenance so that you don’t break the bank a few months down the road.

Don't Pick a Lemon

While we say find something within your budget, make sure you also appeal to your better creature comforts.

You’re gonna be stuck in this rig on the road for who knows how long, so make sure you can live comfortably in the thing. Check the amenities, so that you don’t end up in a truck that is hard to live in.

We don’t know if you co-drive or bring pets with you, but factor in your comfort level, your partner’s, and your pet’s.

Don't Bungle Your Taxes

Sometimes it sounds like we’re beating a dead horse, but we have to say it. No matter what, your 2290s don’t transfer!

That means you need to file for a new 2290 when you get that new truck. We’ve come across plenty of truckers who either don’t know this or think it doesn’t apply to them. It does!

And it’s an easy fix, too. You just need to e-file Form 8849 and claim a credit and you’re good!

Don't Settle

There’s nothing worse than buyer’s remorse. Don’t settle for a new rig that doesn’t meet the quality standards you know you need. I mean a deal is a deal, but make sure you’re happy with it at the end of the day.

And don’t forget, there’s an IFTA deadline on May 2nd! Head over to ExpressIFTA for the easiest way to generate your fuel tax report.

As always, if you have any questions about e-filing your HVUT 2290s or generating your upcoming IFTA report, give us a call at 704.234.6005.

Don’t worry, mistakes happen in the realm of tax filings, which is why we have 2290 Amendments. Let’s be real, your VIN is a scramble of 17 alphanumeric characters—sometimes you might hit the wrong key. And trust us, we’ve seen a few 5’s that look like the letter S more than once on a VIN. To err is human!

If you filed your heavy vehicle use tax with ExpressTruckTax, you can e-file a VIN correction FREE of charge. Since your original filing was with us, we think we can help you out. And if you used another service or paper filed your 2290, you can also e-file a VIN correction for a small fee.

How does it work? Well, VIN corrections can be only filed for taxable or suspended vehicles, not for credit vehicles or prior year suspended vehicles. When you file a VIN correction for Form 2290, you can't combine it with credits claimed on the same form. Also, the wrong VIN must have been paid for in the original form 2290. Otherwise, the IRS will assign penalties in addition to the actual tax.

How do you e-file your VIN correction? After logging in to ExpressTruckTax, click Start New Return and you’ll be prompted with three options. From there, you need to select Form 2290 Amendments.

After that, you are prompted to choose between a VIN Correction, a Taxable Gross Weight Increase, and Mileage Exceeded. Underneath VIN Correction, click Start.

From that point on, your options split between previous filers and new customers. If you filed your 2290 with us before, this is where you can e-file your VIN correction for free!

After that, it’s only a matter of entering the incorrect VIN and updating it to the correct VIN. For a more detailed explanation, check out this video!

So don’t forget, if you filed with ExpressTruckTax, you can e-file a VIN correction with no strings attached. Now, we do need your credit card information for verification purposes, but the service itself is free. After you correct your VIN, you will get your corrected Schedule 1 in minutes. Don’t forget, if you didn’t file your HVUT with us, you can still pay for a VIN correction.

If for any reason you have any questions about e-filing your VIN correction, our friendly customer support team can help you out! Reach us by phone at 704.234.6005, email at support@ExpressTruckTax.com, or live chat with us on our website!

2290 Amendment Form: Fix Your Filing

0

In the year 1919, Washington politicians decided the United States had enough to drink and passed the Eighteenth Amendment—also known as Prohibition. About 13 years later, the US Congress saw the failure of Prohibition, and repealed it in its entirety with the Twenty-First Amendment. Hey, we all make mistakes!

These days, it seems like everybody has something to say about amendments. While we know you have opinions about who can bear arms, let’s stay focused here, Trucking Nation.

Jokes aside, there’s a chance you might make a mistake when you file your heavy vehicle use taxes this year. For this reason alone, you can file a Form 2290 Amendment with ExpressTruckTax. What are these amendments for? They are for increased taxable gross weight, exceeded mileage for suspended vehicles, and vehicle identification number corrections.

Increased Taxable Gross Weight

If the maximum load your truck customarily carried increased, the taxable gross weight probably changed. When this happens, you need to calculate and report the additional tax for the remainder of the period on Form 2290. When filing, you just choose the Amended Return option, and document the month or date the taxable gross weight increased. This should occur on the last day of the month following the month in which the taxable gross weight increased.

Suspended Vehicles Mileage Exceeded

When a suspended vehicle exceeds the mileage use limit, you need to file this amendment. The mileage use limit applies to the total mileage a vehicle is on the road during a period, regardless of the number of owners. Mileage use limit for a heavy vehicle on public highways is 5,000 miles or less (7,500 miles or less for agricultural vehicles).

Vehicle Identification Number Correction

If you filed a 2290 and somehow entered an incorrect VIN, you can file a VIN Correction Amendment to fix it. Now, VIN Corrections can only be filed for taxable or suspended vehicles and not for credit vehicles or for prior year suspended vehicles. When you file a VIN Correction, you must have already paid for the taxes due on the original Form 2290, or the IRS will assign penalties in addition to the actual tax. The good news is, VIN corrections are free if you filed your original 2290 with ExpressTruckTax!

With ExpressTruckTax, we make it easy to file Form 2290 Amendments. Not only do we make it easy, but you will also get your Schedule 1 for the new weight category in minutes!

While you may not need a 2290 Amendment, we’re here to answer any questions about 2290 filing you come across. Reach our dedicated, bilingual customer support team by phone at 704.234.6005, live chat, or by email.

With just three simple steps, ExpressTruckTax can help you file your 2290 and get right back to your life. No muss, no fuss, just a great product and superior e-filing.

How to E-file On-the-Go

To e-file with our new apps in a flash, all you need to do is follow three simple steps!

Account Setup

  • If you’ve never filed with us before, then you’ll need to set up your account. In order to do this, simply select “create new account” or choose to login with your Google+ or Facebook account.
  • If you’re a returning user, simply enter your information and login.
  • Now you can enter in your business details and your EIN number. Again, if you’ve filed with us previously, you can simply use the same business details and EIN that you filed with last year.
  • Then choose to file for the current year and move on to step two!

Vehicle Details

  • After you’ve entered your business information and selected to file for the current tax year, the next step is to enter the information for your vehicle or vehicles.
  • You can do this in a number of different ways. You can import them from a CSV file, you can enter them in manually, or if you’ve filed with us previously, you can import them from your virtual garage in TruckZone.
    • Pro-tip: There are three different kinds of vehicles you can enter. Make sure you’re entering them all on the right screen or you may have to file an amendment (and owe the IRS more money).
  • At the end of this step you can enter in any low mileage credits, and then quickly and easily move on to step 3!

Pay & Transmit

  • The final step in the e-filing process is to pay and securely transmit your return to the IRS.
  • Simply select your payment method from the three types the IRS accepts: Direct debit, EFTPS, and check or money order. Then review your information and securely transmit your return to the IRS.
  • Your Stamped Schedule 1 will follow any minute. It’s just that easy!

Gross Vehicle Weight Increase: 2290 Amendments

0

If you’ve been following our 2290 Amendments series thus far, we’ve discussed Free VIN Corrections and how to handle an Increase in Mileage Limit. But what if your truck puts on a little—or a lot—of weight.

An increase in the gross weight of your vehicle could mean you have to pay an increase on the heavy vehicle use tax you owed during the tax season. But only if your truck goes up to the next weight class, that is.

What is a Weight Category or Class?

There are eight weight classes for trucks and three weight categories. They range from light duty, which is 6,000-14,000 pounds, medium duty, ranging from 14,000-26,000, and heavy duty, which ranges from 26,000 to more than 33,000 pounds.

These three categories then each break down into eight smaller weight classes. The weight class of your vehicle dictates how much you will pay in heavy vehicle use taxes for the tax year. The heavier the vehicle, the higher the taxes.

What Happens if My Gross Vehicle Weight Increases?

When your GVW increases during the tax year, all you have to do is e-file a 2290 Amendment for an increase in Gross Vehicle Weight! And when you use ExpressTruckTax, e-filing that amendment is quick, easy, and economical.

In fact, it’s only a three step process!

Step 1: Log In or Create New User

  • If you’re a returning user, login
  • If you’re a new user, create your account

  • Enter your business information (if you haven’t already)
  • Then click “Start” under Form 2290 Amendments
  • Choose the kind of Amendment you want to file.
  • In this case, you want to click “Start” under “Taxable Gross Weight Increase.”

Step 2: Input Vehicle Information

  • Select your vehicle’s first-used month
  • Select the month where your vehicle’s weight change occurred

  • If you e-filed your 2290 with ExpressTruckTax this year, select the vehicle or vehicles you would like to amend from your previous return and choose the new weight class.
  • If you are changing the weight of more than 1 vehicle, click “Save & Add Another.”

  • If you’re finished, simply click “Save” and move on to the next screen where your tax is prorated for you.

Step 3: Transmit Your Return

  • Choose from three methods of payment to pay your increased tax to the IRS.
  • You can pay by Direct Debit, EFTPS, and check or money order (No credit or debit cards with the IRS)

  • Then our Instant Audit feature reviews your return for errors and you’re done!
  • You can securely transmit your amendment to the IRS and receive your new Stamped Schedule 1 in minutes!
    • Pro-Tip: Be sure to submit your amendment by the last day of the month following the month in which the weight increase occurred. That means, if the increase occurred in August, you need to file your amendment by the end of September.

And that’s it! You can e-file your amendment as easy as 1,2,3. From start to finish the whole process only takes 10 minutes or less. We’re just that good!

If you need any help e-filing your 2290 Amendments, our dedicated support legends are here year round to answer all of your tax related questions! So don’t be shy, give us a call at 704.234.6005 or send us an email at support@expresstrucktax.com for 24 our support in English or Spanish.

And starting July 1, ExpressTruckTax will be giving 10% off of their already super-affordable filing price! All you have to do is enter the promo code ETT10. What a deal!

Increase in Mileage Limit: E-filing 2290 Amendments

0
Tax season and tax amendments go hand in hand. After you file your Form 2290, at the end of the tax season (August 31), you may notice that there are some changes you need to make on your tax forms.

We’ve already discussed Free VIN Corrections, but you may be wondering about how to file an amendment to increase or change your mileage limit.

There are three types of amendments you can e-file when it comes to your Form 2290. The second of those amendments (since we’ve already addressed the VIN Corrections), is the mileage limit amendment.

What is a Mileage Limit?

A mileage limit is the amount of miles a suspended heavy vehicle is allowed to drive on public highways before tax is owed on that vehicle. Typically, the limit for suspended vehicles is 5,000 miles, and if this is exceeded, tax is immediately due. However, for agricultural vehicles, this limit is 7,500 miles!

Keep in mind that this limit only applies to the total miles your vehicle drives on public highways during the tax year, regardless of the number of owners.

The Form 2290 Mileage Increase Amendment is for suspended vehicles that exceeded the mileage use limit for the tax year, so if you filed as suspended, but just went over that limit, then it’s time to start e-filing!

I’m Over the Mileage Limit! Now What?

So what happens when you go over the mileage limit? Well, Trucking Nation, that’s when you start e-filing your handy dandy Form 2290 Amendment!

Now you don’t have to worry about filing amendments just yet, but you should be pre-filing. However, there’s a chance you might need to e-file an amendment in the near future. But that’s why we’re here!

And at ExpressTruckTax, as e-filing industry leaders, our amendment process is quick and easy!

Step 1: Log In or Create New User

  • If you are a returning user, log in to your account.
  • If you are a new user, choose to create an account.
    • Pro-tip: If you don’t want to go through and create a whole new account, you can also choose to link your ExpressTruckTax account with Facebook or Google+.

  • Then, click “Start” under Form 2290 Amendments.
  • After that, choose the kind of amendment and click start under “Mileage Exceeded.”

Step 2: Make Your Corrections

  • If you are a returning user, you can choose to amend a return you e-filed with us.
  • If you are a new user, you can choose to amend a return that was paper-filed or e-filed elsewhere.

  • Next, choose the vehicle you are filing the amendment for.
  • Again, if you haven’t filed with us, enter the vehicle’s information, such as the VIN, taxable gross weight, and whether or not it’s used for logging.
  • Finally, hit “Save” or “Save & Add Another” if you’re e-filing an amendment for more than one vehicle.

Step 3: Review & Submit!

  • The prorated tax is then calculated for you!
  • Click “Next,” and enter your method of payment. The IRS accepts Direct Debit (EFW), EFTPS, and check or money order (The IRS does not accept credit/debit cards).

  • Then, just review your information one last time, and then let our system perform an Instant Audit to make certain everything is correct.
  • Finally, securely transmit your amendment to the IRS, and you should get your Stamped Schedule 1 in minutes!

When it comes time to e-file Form 2290 Amendments, we’ll be here for you! So if you have any questions or need any help when it comes to e-filing, you can talk to us.

Just give us a call at 704.234.6005 or send us an email at support@expresstrucktax.com for 24/hour support in English and Spanish!

And don’t forget, that there are only 8 days left to pre-file your HVUT! That means there’s still time to get a sweet discount on e-filing when you use the promocode PREFILE, and you can still be entered in our Swag Bag Giveaway. So don’t delay, pre-file today!

7 Common E-filing Mistakes to Avoid

0
With pre-filing season in full swing and the regular filing season peeking over the horizon, there are some common mistakes we should address.

Time and time again filers tend to make the same mistakes when it comes to filing their heavy vehicle use taxes. So let’s go over them so they’re fresh in your mind when you e-file or pre-file this tax season!

1. Incorrect EIN or VIN

Your EIN is your Employer Identification Number, and your VIN is your Vehicle Identification Number, and both are equally important. In order to file your HVUT, you will need to know both, and both will need to be correct. So check, double check, and triple check if you have to, because if those ID’s are even one letter or number off, your return could be rejected by the IRS. And nobody wants that! But if it does happen, don’t fret! You can retransmit rejected returns for free with us!

2. Computation Errors

We know tax calculations can be hard, but that’s why when you e-file with us, our system will calculate the amount due for you! Now you don’t have to worry about doing all that complicated tax math. All you have to worry about is what you need to pay and remembering your EIN and VIN so you don’t make any errors on your tax forms. Then, once you’re ready to submit, our Instant Audit feature can help you eliminate any errors you may have made before you complete your return.

3. Incorrect Filing Status

If you know you will travel fewer than 5,000 miles on public highways during the tax year, then you should file your vehicle as suspended. This saves you time and money, and if you ever exceed the mileage limit, you can always submit an Amendment through ExpressTruckTax!

4. Incorrect Filing Year

If you’re pre-filing this month, like all of the cool kids, be sure that you’re selecting the correct tax year! Instead of electing to file for the current tax year, you want to select advance filing for the 2015-16 tax year. Like so:

5. Duplicate Vehicle Information

You definitely don’t want to enter a single vehicle more than once, but if you do accidentally enter details for the same truck twice, you can remove it easily by clicking the “remove” button next to the duplicate vehicle.

6. EIN Not Registered

It takes up to 10 business days for a new EIN to be entered into the IRS system. So if you don’t have one yet, you need one ASAP! That way you’ll be prepared in time to still pre-file before the tax season begins July 1. If you already have your EIN, don’t forget you have to wait for the IRS to activate your EIN before you can e-file! If you don’t, you’ll keep getting an EIN Not Registered error when you try to begin your HVUT.

7. Incorrect First-Used Month

This error might not get your return rejected, but it will cause some problems when it comes time to get your new tags. The tax year for HVUT begins July 1st. This means that for all renewals, the first-used month is automatically July—even if you’re filing in August! There is only one instance where you would choose a later month, and that’s if your truck is purchased after the beginning of the tax year. For example, if you purchase a new truck in September, then that would be the first-used month.

What it all boils down to in the end, Trucking Nation, is to make certain you check, re-check and re-check your taxes again before hitting submit. You never know what you could miss!

But if you find yourself unsure or if you have any questions, we’re here for you! We have a dedicated, year-round support team just to help you. So give us a call at 704.234.6005 or send us an email at support@expresstrucktax.com for 24 hour support in English and Spanish! And let us help you avoid these common e-filing mistakes.

Everybody makes mistakes, even truck tax professionals. That’s why at ExpressTruckTax we are a  firm believer in second chances!

After you e-file with us the first time, we offer you free VIN corrections just in case you make an error. That way you don’t have to pay another fee to file again just because you may have mixed up two numbers. It’s one of the endless perks we offer our returning users.

However, if you didn’t file with us originally, you can always e-file a Form 2290 Amendment quickly and affordably through ExpressTruckTax.

From start to finish, the whole process of e-filing corrections and amendments through ExpressTruckTax is very easy! Plus, it only takes a few minutes and then it’s right back to your life!

In fact, if you’ve filed with us before, then the amendment process will be very familiar for you. Here’s how to file for VIN corrections of Form 2290 Amendments:

Step 1: Log in or Create an Account

  • Once your account is created, or you’ve logged in, click “Start” under Form 2290 Amendments.
  • Then select the Amendment you would like to file. For this case, you will choose VIN correction (though we also offer amendments for vehicle weight increase and exceeding the mileage limit).

Step 2: Correction Time

  • Select whether you’d like to correct a return you previously e-filed with us, or one filed elsewhere.
  • Next enter your vehicle’s first-used month.
  • Select Add VIN Correction, and enter the vehicle’s originally-reported VIN (the one entered incorrectly). Then enter the gross weight, whether the vehicle is taxable or suspended, and lastly enter the new, correct VIN.
  • If you need to correct the VIN of more than one vehicle, click “Save and Add Another.” If you only need to correct one, just click “Save” and you’re done!

Step 3: Review and Submit

  • Before you submit your information to the IRS, be sure to check for errors one last time. You definitely don’t want to have to file another amendment! Our Instant Audit will also scan your return for gaps and errors.
  • Now hit the big green “TRANSMIT” button to securely submit your VIN correction. Now all you have to do is wait for IRS approval!

Once the IRS accepts your correction, you’ll get a shiny new Stamped Schedule 1! Most users receive theirs within 10 minutes of submitting their correction.

You can also choose to set up additional notifications, and you can elect to have your return faxed to you or mailed to your carrier, home office, or even your accountant. Whatever works for you!

As always, if you find yourself in times of trouble, give us a call at 704.234.6005 or send us an email at support@expresstrucktax.com for 24/hour support in English and Spanish. Whatever you need, we’re here for you.

More Answers to Your Frequently Asked HVUT Questions!

0

It’s time for some much-needed Monday Morning brain stimulation!

Whether you’ve been scratching your head over the same HVUT questions, or you’re just looking to learn some random facts to freshen your Trivia Game prowess, then this blog is for you!

1. Is my HVUT renewal due the same time my vehicle registration renewal is due?

No. Although you need a current stamped Schedule 1 to renew your tags, they are not necessarily due at the same time.

Every year the HVUT renewal period opens July 1st and closes at the end of August. All renewals must be filed and taxes paid during this period, regardless of when your vehicle registration is due. If you wait to file your renewal until you need your tags, you will owe additional late fees on top of the heavy vehicle tax. When filling out your Form 2290 for your renewal, your first-used month is automatically July.

2. My taxable gross weight has increased. Do I need to file a new Form 2290?

No, but you may need to file a Form 2290 Amendment, which can also be easily E-filed through ExpressTruckTax.

If your gross vehicle weight has increased enough to bump you up into a higher weight category, then you can E-file a 2290 Amendment and only pay the difference. For a step-by-step guide to E-filing an Amendment for a Weight Increase, check out this blog.

3. My credits are greater than the tax due. How do I get this money back?

If the IRS owes you more than you owe them, then our system will automatically generate a completed Form 8849 for a refund. It’s just one more way we go the extra mile to try to make your life easier!

4. Can I pay my HVUT with a debit or credit card?

No, the IRS no longer accepts tax payments in the form of a debit or credit card. However, you may pay our E-filing fee with either.

The IRS only accepts payments from Direct Debit (Electronic Funds Withdrawal), EFTPS, or by Check or Money order. When paying by check or money order, be sure to attach a 2290-V payment voucher. If you E-file with us, we’ll automatically create a completed payment voucher for you!

5. Where is your Support Team located, and how can I reach them?

Our Support Team is proudly located in the USA at our headquarters in Rock Hill, South Carolina. Not only are we USA-based, but we offer support in English and Spanish, all year long. We don’t just hire one or two people to provide seasonal tax support during the renewal period. Instead, we have a dedicated team that does nothing but provide HVUT support every day of the year.

We take great pride in being immersed in the transportation industry and talking to truckers, fleet owners, farmers, and CPA’s every day. We know this gives us an understanding of the industry that can’t be replicated, and it helps us to continue offering you the support experience of a lifetime.

You can reach us via phone Monday through Friday from 8am-6pm EST at 704.234.6005. You can also shoot us a message via live online chat, or email us at support@expresstrucktax.com for 24/7 emergency assistance.
