Free VIN Corrections: Only with ExpressTruckTax

0
Hola, Trucking Nation! Did you know that ExpressTruckTax offers completely FREE VIN Corrections?

But only if your return was originally E-filed with us. It’s just one more perk we offer our returning guests.

But even if you didn’t file with us originally, you can still E-file a Form 2290 Amendment quickly and affordably with ExpressTruckTax.

And it’s easy to do, too. After all, we’re ExpressTruckTax. That’s how we roll!

When E-filing a Form 2290 Amendment for a VIN Correction, you’ll follow the same simple three steps you use when E-filing any of our IRS Forms. And once you’re finished, you’ll receive your new, correct stamped Schedule 1 via email in just minutes!

Let’s run through the process, and then get E-filing!

Step 1: Create an Account or Log Back In

  • Once you’re logged into your account, click “Start” under Form 2290 Amendments.
  • Then select which Amendment you’d like to file. In this case, choose VIN correction (we also offer amendments for vehicle weight increase & exceeding the mileage limit).

Step 2: Make the Correction

  • Select whether you’d like to correct a return E-filed with us, or one filed elsewhere.
  • Next enter the vehicle’s first-used month.
  • Then select Add VIN Correction, and enter the vehicle’s originally-reported VIN (the incorrect one). Then enter the gross weight, check whether the vehicle is taxable or suspended, and then enter the new, correct VIN.
  • To correct the VIN of more than one vehicle, click “Save and Add Another.” If you’re correcting only one, just Save and done!

Step 3: Review & Submit

  • Before submitting your information to the IRS, be sure to check for errors one last time (wouldn’t want to file another amendment now, would we!). Our Instant Audit will also scan your return for gaps and errors.
  • Now just hit the big, green TRANSMIT button to securely submit your VIN correction, and then kick back and wait for IRS approval.

Your new and improved stamped Schedule 1 will be sent to you the second the IRS accepts your correction. Most users receive theirs in 10 minutes.

If you chose to receive additional notifications, you’ll receive those asap too. You can even elect to have your return faxed or mailed to your carrier, home office, or accountant–whatever is convenient for you!

Need help E-filing your Amendment? Just ask one of our Support Team! They’re available in our sunny hometown of Rock Hill, SC, 24/7 to ensure you have a smooth E-filing experience. Ring them at 704.234.6005 or email them 24/7 at support@expresstrucktax.com.

Make the Switch: 10 Reasons to Ditch Paper Filing

0
It’s the dawn of a New Year, Trucking Nation! This new beginning is the perfect time to start fresh and commit to news ways of making 2015 the best year yet.

How many resolutions did you make? Now ask yourself this: how many have you already broken? It’s easy to get discouraged when we trip up, but to keep yourself motivated, it’s important to set some goals that are easily attainable.

Here’s one improvement you can make, and it’s super easy too! Have you Made the Switch yet?

I mean, have you ditched dirty old paper filing and started E-filing your truck taxes? Whether you have one vehicle or hundreds to file for, ExpressTruckTax is hands down the fastest, most affordable way to E-file Form 2290 (or 2290 Amendments & Form 8849 for credits).

You’ll not only save time this year when you file, but every single year after that. In fact, the benefits of E-filing over paper filing are nearly endless. But to narrow it down, here are the Top 10 reasons to cut out paper filing and start E-filing, baby!

Top 10 Reasons to Make the Switch

  • 1. No lines: In fact, there’s no waiting. Period. Just instant gratification!

Why wait in line at the IRS office when you can E-file from the comfort of your cab, in a coffee shop, or just about anywhere else you can get an internet connection?

And don’t forget the time and gas you spend driving to the office. In fact, we have customers who since making the switch no longer have to set aside an entire day to drive hundreds of miles to the nearest IRS office! Score.
  • 2. More Secure: Far too often, you’ll see headlines about truckers being scammed on taxes, insurance, or any number of things.

Luckily with ExpressTruckTax, you can E-file with confidence. As an IRS-certified E-file provider with several other industry-leading E-filing products on the market, you can rest assured that your information is safe. It travels from our encrypted site straight to the IRS servers. Don’t take my word for it–Just ask any one of the hundreds of thousands who’ve E-filed with us.
  • 3. Zero Calculations: Perhaps my favorite reason to E-file, no math required! As someone that avoids unnecessary math like the plague, I love that ExpressTruckTax does all of the calculations for me, no calculator needed!

Not only does our program calculate the amount of HVUT due per vehicle, but it will also prorate reimbursements or tax owed for new vehicles acquired during the tax year. What’s the alternative? Breaking out a partial period tax table and figuring it out yourself?! PASS. I’ll stick with E-filing, thank you very much!
  • 4. Fewer Errors: It’s a fact. E-filed returns have fewer errors than paper-filed ones! It’s not just because we do the calculations for you, it’s also because we check your return with our Instant Audit before you submit it.

If there’s an error, chances are our system will catch it for you. Maybe that’s why 98% of returns E-filed with us are accepted by the IRS instantly. Not to brag or anything.
  • 5. No Snail Mail: Not that we have anything against postal workers, it’s just that the Internet is faster. When you E-file, you’ll know in minutes whether or not your return was accepted by the IRS.

Personally, I prefer that sense of security as opposed to sending my sensitive information out into the void, not to get a response for weeks. Which leads me to my next point, your return is accepted right away, which means you also...
  • 6. Receive Your Stamped Schedule 1 Immediately: Most users have their stamped Schedule 1 within 10 minutes of transmitting their returns. Even better, the second the IRS has stamped it, we’ll email you a copy.

You can also elect to have us mail you a copy if you don’t have a printer, or you can even fax it to your carrier–or any other number of your choosing!
  • 7. Eco-Friendly: No driving, no postal mail, no paper! What could be more eco-friendly than that? The carbon footprint is nearly non-existent. Mother Earth will thank you.
  • 8. Free Support–All Day, Every Day: Maybe the best reason to E-file with us. You get free, 24/7, 365 access to our Support Heroes. When you have a question or crisis, you can count on them to be there to help.

And unlike some companies that hire seasonal help, our support heroes are full-time support beasts! Offering truck tax support is all they do, all year. They know truck tax, they know the industry. Who else would you want answering your questions?
  • 9. Save Time Filing, Year After Year: If you only file truck taxes once a year, you may think saving time filing only once isn’t too big of a deal. But with ExpressTruckTax, you’ll save time every time you E-file. In fact, the more you E-file with us, the more time you save!

Returning users have two ways of saving time. By using Truck Zone, you can quickly search for and add vehicles to your return without having to re-enter VIN, gross weight, etc. Or for the ultimate time-saving experience, you can copy a previous year’s return. This will auto-complete all fields, but still allow you to edit the return if any details have changed. Whichever method you choose, you can E-file in 5 minutes or less. It’s the gift that keeps on giving.

  • 10. Organized & Accessible Tax Records: If the IRS comes knockin’, you won’t have to shake in your boots. With ExpressTruckTax, you have access to all returns and Schedule 1’s filed with us from the Dashboard of your account. You can view, download, or email this information whenever you need it. No worries about your tax information getting lost, destroyed, or crumpled up in a drawer.
Still not convinced? A picture is worth a thousand words, so here’s a before and after of Sir Charles. E-filing suits him, as it does you.

For these reasons and many more, it’s time to Make the Switch. Start your New Year on the right foot, and resolve to do something better for you, for your business, and for the environment.

Ready to set up an account? The process is free and easy, just check out this step-by-step guide. Or call our Support Heroes, and they’ll walk you through it. Ring them at 704.234.6005, strike up a live online chat, or email them 24/7 at support@expresstrucktax.com.

~Happy New Year!~

Form 2290 Taxable Vehicles: What is an Agricultural Vehicle?

0
If our Support Heroes had a nickel for every time they heard this question, they’d all be flying private jets right now!

And that question is: Can I file my vehicle as an agricultural vehicle?

Depending on your vehicle type and how you use it, the tax rates and filing requirements vary. This is just one reason why it’s so important to categorize your taxable vehicle correctly when filing your HVUT Form 2290.

We recently discussed the different requirements for logging vehicles, which are vehicles used solely for the transport of forested materials. Logging vehicles are taxed at a lower rate than typical heavy vehicles, so if you drive a logging truck, be sure the check “used for logging” to be taxed at the lower rate!

Another type of taxable vehicle with special requirements is the agricultural vehicle.

Agricultural Vehicles & Higher Mileage Limits

Vehicles typically required to file HVUT are those with a taxable gross weight over 55,000 lbs and that travel over 5,000 miles on public highways throughout the tax period.

BUT to give farmers a break, the IRS made the requirements a bit more lenient for vehicles used in agriculture. Agricultural vehicles, regardless of their weight, are allowed to drive up to 7,500 miles on public highways each year before having to pay any tax at all!

Just to clarify, this does not mean that you don’t have to file HVUT at all. If your gross vehicle weight is over 55,000 pounds, you must still file HVUT and receive a stamped Schedule 1. However, if your agricultural vehicle will drive fewer than 7,500 miles throughout the tax year, you will owe zero tax when you file! This is known as filing a Category W or a Suspended/Low Mileage Vehicle.

Does My Vehicle Qualify as an Agricultural Vehicle?

To ensure that your vehicle qualifies as an “agricultural” vehicle according to IRS standards, here are the two requirements your vehicle must meet:

  • 1. The vehicle is used primarily for farming purposes throughout the tax year. But what does the IRS consider “primarily for farming purposes”? It’s actually quite simple. More than half of the vehicle’s total mileage for the year must be used for farming purposes.

And a farming purpose, according to the IRS, is any activity that contributes to the conduct of a farm. This can include activities such as transporting goods to and from a farm (goods like livestock, produce, animal feed, fertilizer, etc), direct use in agricultural production, or just performing work around the farm like repairing fences, building irrigation ditches, clearing land, etc.
-AND-
  • 2. The vehicle is registered as an agricultural vehicle in your state. Although your vehicle must be registered as such, no special license plates or tags marked “agriculture” are required to maintain your status as an agricultural vehicle.
If your vehicle meets both of these requirements above, then you can file as an agricultural vehicle with a higher mileage limit! Woo hoo!

To file as a suspended agriculture vehicle, skip the first “Taxable Vehicle” section of the 2290, and instead enter your vehicle’s information under the “Low Mileage/Suspended Vehicle” section. And be sure you check the box “Used for Agriculture.”

Exceeding the Mileage Limit

Occasionally, agriculture vehicles will be filed as Suspended (Category W) at the beginning of the tax period, but then exceed the 7,500 mile limit during the year.

If your vehicle goes over, you must file a Form 2290 Amendment for a Mileage Increase. The amendment is due by the end of the month following the month in which you exceeded the limit. This means that if you went over 7,500 in January, then the amendment must be filed by the last day of February.

When filing the mileage increase amendment, the IRS will prorate your HVUT for the remaining months of the tax year (which runs from July 1st to June 30th each year). This means that even though you will owe some tax, it will not be the full amount you would’ve owed if you had filed as a non-suspended vehicle initially. Hooray, for lower tax!

Year-Round Support for Farmers!

If anyone deserves a break, it’s farmers! That’s why we’re always here to assist you 24/7, 365. At this time of year, we’re getting plenty of calls from farmers trying to renew their tags, but suddenly realizing they need a stamped Schedule 1 to do so! Luckily, they’ve come to the right place!

E-filing with ExpressTruckTax is the fastest and easiest way to receive your stamped Schedule 1. You can even get it after business hours or on the weekend! (If you elect to pay the IRS by check or money order.)

If you have questions about E-filing your Form 2290 with a Suspended Vehicle or questions about E-filing a Form 2290 Amendment for exceeding the mileage limit, call our Support Heroes! They’re available at 704.234.6005 or for 24/7 assistance, email support@expresstrucktax.com.

0
‘Tis the season to E-file Form 2290 Amendments! Everyone recently E-filed the 2290 yearly renewal, and now, some are noticing errors or changes that need to be made.

We’ve already covered how to speedily E-file an amendment for increased gross vehicle weight. Today, the saga continues!

The second kind of 2290 Amendment is for suspended vehicles that exceed the mileage use limit. Suspended vehicles (Filed as Category W) can only travel up to 5,000 miles during the tax year (7,500 miles or fewer for agricultural vehicles).

This limit applies to the total miles the vehicle drives on public highways during the tax year, regardless of the number of owners.

So what happens when that trip odometer reaches 5,001? Well, that means it’s time to pull over, whip out your tablet or laptop, and quickly E-file an amendment with ExpressTruckTax!

Here’s how to E-file a 2290 Amendment in 10 minutes or less:

*Note: Be sure to E-file your amendment by the last day of the month following the month in which you exceeded the mileage limit.

Step 1: Get Situated

-Returning users login or new users create an account.
-Click “Start” under Form 2290 Amendments.
-Choose the kind of amendment. Click start under “Mileage Exceeded.”

Step 2: Vehicle Info

-Choose to amend a return E-filed with us, or choose to amend a return that was paper-filed or E-filed elsewhere.
-Select the correct tax year, the vehicle’s first-used month, & the month the mileage limit was exceeded.
-Next choose the vehicle you are filing the amendment for, OR if you haven’t filed with us, enter the vehicle’s information like the VIN, taxable gross weight, and whether it’s used for logging.
-Finally, hit “save” or “save & add another” if you’re E-filing an amendment for more than one vehicle.

Step 3: Finish it!

-Voila! The prorated tax is calculated for you! And there was much rejoicing!
-Click “next,” and enter your method of payment. The IRS accepts Direct Debit (EFW), EFTPS, and check or money order. (No credit/debit cards.)
-Almost there, just review your info one last time while our system performs the Instant Audit to make sure everything is correct.
-Finally, securely transmit your amendment to the IRS & watch in amazement as your new stamped Schedule 1 is emailed to you in minutes!

Gross Vehicle Weight Increase: Easy E-filing of Form 2290 Amendments

0
It happens. We all put on a little extra weight now and again–especially around the holiday season! Fortunately, this weight gain comes with minimal consequences (like having to break out those elastic-waist sweatpants)!

But what happens when your truck gains weight? An increase in the taxable gross weight of a vehicle means an increase in the heavy vehicle use tax owed if this weight increase bumps your truck up to
the next weight category.

Are you ready to calculate the prorated tax & break out those partial-period tax tables?

No? Well, good! We at ExpressTruckTax would never put you through such torture!

If you’ve used any of our programs or apps before, you know we are pro-simplicity and anti-calculator! Whether you E-filed this year’s Form 2290 with us or not, E-filing a Form 2290 Amendment is super easy with ExpressTruckTax because we do all of the calculating for you!

Here’s a Step-by-Step guide to E-filing an amendment for increased vehicle weight.

*Note: Be sure to submit the amendment by the last day of the month following the month in which the weight increase occurred.

Step 1: Get started!

-Returning users login or new users create an account.
-Click “Start” under Form 2290 Amendments.
-Choose the kind of amendment. Click start under “Taxable Gross Weight Increase.”

Step 2: Input Vehicle Info

-Select vehicle first-used month.
-Select the amended month, the month in which the weight change occurred.
-If you E-filed your 2290 with us this year, select the vehicles to be amended from that return and choose the new weight class.
-If the return was not filed with us, enter the vehicle’s VIN and the new weight class.
-If you are changing the weight of more than 1 vehicle, click “Save & Add Another;” otherwise, click “Save” to complete.
-Rejoice as the tax is prorated for you! I told you that you wouldn’t need a calculator!

Step 3: Transmit the Return

-Choose from three methods of payment to pay your increased tax to the IRS. As always, we offer Direct Debit (EFW), EFTPS, and check or money order.
-Time for the Instant Audit! Our system scans your return for errors, just one more step to ensure that you get the green light!
-And you’re done! Securely transmit your amendment to the IRS and receive your new stamped Schedule 1 within minutes!

And that’s all, folks. Three easy steps with just a few clicks here & a dash of typing there. All in all, you’ll be done in 10 minutes or less thanks to our stream-lined process.

We also offer speedy E-filing of 2290 Amendments for VIN corrections (for FREE!) & for increases in mileage. If you’re not sure which amendment to file, don’t be shy! Ask our Support Heroes! They’re available via 24/7 email support at support@expresstrucktax.com. They’re also on live chat, or just a phone call away at 704.234.6005.

E-FILING 101: Frequently Asked Questions for Filing Form 2290

0
You may not know it yet, but there’s a tax-filing pro inside each and every one of you! We at ExpressTruckTax firmly believe this, so that’s why we designed accessible E-filing solutions– to let that tax pro shine!

So on this #ManicMonday morning, less than one week from the Form 2290 deadline, it’s time to unleash your inner tax guru!

Here’s a crash course in E-filing your truck taxes– ETT 101: Intro to Easy E-filing! Get a head start on your E-filing degree by learning the answers to these frequently asked questions.

  • Q: What is my first-used month?

A: For most people, the default answer is July. The HVUT tax year opens July 1st. So this means that the first-used month for all renewals is automatically July. Even if you’re filing in August or September, the first-used month must still be set back to July if you’re vehicle was driven that month. The only time you’d select a later month is if the vehicle is purchased later in the year.

  • Q. What is the taxable gross weight of my vehicle?

A: The taxable gross weight of your vehicle can be determined by adding three numbers together. 1. The unloaded (empty tare) weight of the vehicle, plus 2. The unloaded weight of any trailers customarily attached to the vehicle, and 3. The weight of the maximum load customarily carried in the vehicle and/or attached trailers. The sum of these three figures is your taxable gross weight.

  • Q: Does the IRS take credit cards?

A: No, but we do! While you can pay our fee with a credit card, the IRS no longer accepts tax payments via credit card. We do, however, still offer three convenient methods of payment: Direct Debit, EFTPS, and Check or Money order. Direct Debit, also called Electronic Funds Withdrawal, is the fastest way to pay, but it’s only available to E-filers! You provide your bank account & routing number, and the IRS initiates a Direct Debit from your bank account.

EFTPS is a free service through the US Dept. of the Treasury, but you must register with this system 5-7 business days prior to when you need to make a payment. Also, the payment must be scheduled at least 1 business day prior to the payment due date!

Finally, if you pay by check or money order, you’ll get your Schedule 1 back even on a weekend or holiday! Just don’t forget to mail your 2290-V payment voucher with your check, but don’t staple them together! The completed voucher can be found on page 5 of your 2290; we autofill it for you!

  • Q: Why am I entering two methods of payment?

A: While you can pay us by credit card (only $9.90 for those with a single truck!), you will also need to select one of the three payment methods above to pay your taxes to the IRS.

  • Q: How do I make VIN corrections?
A: The answer: easily! If your return is rejected for a VIN error, such as a duplicate filing error, we’ll help you find the mistake, fix it, and retransmit it to the IRS for free! But only if you E-filed with us! If you made a VIN error, but your return was accepted by the IRS, then you can quickly E-file a Form 2290 Amendment. Simply log back in as a Returning User, click “Start” under 2290 Amendment, then “Start” under Form 2290 VIN correction. You’ll receive your updated, stamped Schedule 1 as soon as the IRS accepts the correction!

Of course, we can’t possibly cover everything in one class! So if you’re ready to graduate, check out the sequel: E-FILING 102!

And if you still have questions, give our Support Heroes a call! They offer one-on-one ETT101 tutoring in English, Spanish, and Russian! Call us at 704.234.6005, speak via online chat, or get 24/7 email support at support@expresstrucktax.com

FAQ’s for Truckers who E-File IRS Form 2290 for 2012-2013 Tax year

0
For truckers who are new to the E-Filing process, it may seem a bit intimidating; but rest assured, it is a quick and easy process.  Below are some common questions that may help.

Who is required to E-File Form 2290?
Those reporting 25 or more vehicles for any taxable period are required to E-File through an IRS-approved software provider; however everyone is encouraged to E-File.  Electronic filing saves you time and postage, and helps to reduce preparation and processing errors.

Why do I need an Employer Identification Number to e-file?
The EIN along with your name provides a unique identifier for each taxpayer, which protects your privacy.

What is my name control?
Your name control is assigned at the time the IRS approves your application for an Employer Identification Number. The name control consists of up to four alpha or numeric characters. Before the IRS can validate your electronically filed return, you must provide your name control and it must match what the IRS has in their records.

Can I still file my return electronically if I just received my EIN?
Yes, you may file your return electronically. However, you should wait two weeks from the date your EIN was assigned to allow your name control to be established in the IRS computer system. Your return will be rejected if you try to file your return electronically before your EIN is fully established.

Where can I find an approved e-file provider?
You can find an approved provider for Form 2290 on the 2290 e-file partner’s page at irs.gov.

When are my Form 2290 taxes due?
You must file Form 2290 by the last day of the month following the month the vehicle was first used on public highways. These due date rules apply whether you are paying the tax or reporting the suspension of tax. It is important to file and pay all your 2290 taxes on time to avoid paying interest and penalties.

How will I know the IRS has received my return?
You will receive an electronic version of the Schedule 1 containing a watermark of the e-file logo in the background. The Schedule 1 can be printed from your own computer.

How do I make corrections to my e-filed return?
You would need to file an amendment to the 2290.

If I buy another truck after I have e-filed my 2290 for the current tax period, should I e-file my original 2290 again and simply add the new vehicle to the Schedule 1?
You must file a new Form 2290 listing only the new vehicles. You may e-file that 2290 anytime before the last day of the month following the month the new vehicle was first used.

May I file one 2290 for two trucks that I place on the road in two consecutive months?
The amount of tax you owe depends on the month when you first placed your trucks on the road, so you would need to file a separate 2290 for each truck stating the month it was first used.

What should I do if my e-filed return is rejected by the IRS for duplication?
Make sure the correct VIN are listed and are not duplications from a previous filing; correct any duplication and re-submit the return.

What is a duplicate filing error?
The system detects when you have filed a return under the same EIN, for the same tax period, for the same vehicle(s) and/or the same VIN category. Check to make sure you are reporting new vehicles only and that the other information is correct.

How do I claim a refund electronically for a vehicle that was sold, destroyed or stolen during the tax period?
You can claim a credit using Form 8849, Schedule 6, and Other Claims. The refund amount will depend on when the vehicle was sold, destroyed or stolen.

How do I claim a refund electronically for a vehicle I used less than 5,000 miles during the tax period?
If you already paid the tax on a vehicle you used for less than 5,000 miles, you can claim a credit using Form 8849, Schedule 6, and Other Claims. However, a credit or claim for this refund cannot be filed until the next tax period.
