How To Pay Your 2290 Tax When E-filing

0

Taxes aren’t very much fun, even though when we pay some of them like the HVUT the money goes to repairing and improving our highways giving us a smoother ride, and preventing wear and tear on our rigs. That’s all great and all, but you still have to pay the tax yourself, so make sure you’re up to date on exactly how to pay it.

How To Pay Your 2290 HVUT

Form 2290 is used to pay your HVUT or heavy vehicle use tax. If you’re in a highway motor vehicle that has a taxable gross weight of 55,000 pounds or more then you have to file e-file a HVUT 2290 form in order to get a copy of your Stamped Schedule 1. E-file means electronically filing online.

A highway motor vehicle includes vehicles that are designed to carry loads over public highways, whether they were also designed to perform other functions or not and that are self-propelled. These vehicles generally include buses, tractor trailers, and large trucks. Vans and pickup trucks tend to weigh less than 55,000 pounds.

The weight only includes the vehicle and it’s chassis or body, not it’s load. The type of load doesn’t matter either, the vehicle can be designed to passengers, supplies, or cargo.

Also, a public highway includes any road in the United States that isn’t private, including city, county, state and federal roads.

Your form 2290 is due the last day of the 2nd month after you first use your new qualifying vehicle. For example, if you first start driving a new qualifying vehicle in February then your Form 2290 would be due by March 31st. Also, the form 2290 needs to be renewed annually by August 31st.

When you file your form 2290 you have to pay your HVUT and you have a few different options for doing that.

You can pay with EFW or Electronic Fund Withdrawal, which is the option offered when you e-file your federal taxes with the use of IRS authorized preparation software, like ExpressTruckTax, or through a tax professional.

With EFW you enter in your bank account information to the IRS’s safe and secure payment system and the tax amount you owe is withdrawn from your bank account usually within 24 to 48 hours of submitting your payment.

Another payment option you have is to pay with the EFTPS or Electronic Federal Tax Payment System. If you select that option you will be taken to the EFTPS site. EFTPS is the free safe and secure payment system that’s offered by the U.S. Department of the Treasury.

To use the EFTPS you will need to create a free account, enter your bank account information, and verify it because this payment system works by withdrawing the funds you owe from your bank account.

Also, you have the 3rd option of mailing a check or money order to the IRS directly. Just make sure that the check or money order is payable to the U.S. Treasury and includes your name, address, EIN, “IRS form 2290”, and the date. Do not send cash.

If you choose to send a check or money order you’ll need to print the payment voucher 2290 -V, or page 5 of your 2290 and include it with your payment. Don’t staple your payment to your form 2990 or payment voucher.

Send Your Payment and voucher to:

Internal Revenue Service,
P.O. Box 804525,
Cincinnati,
OH 45280-4525.

Three Easy Ways to Pay Your HVUT

0

Gathering the funds to pay your HVUT each year is headache enough! Sending those funds to the IRS should be the easy part.

That’s why ExpressTruckTax has gone above and beyond to make paying your heavy vehicle use taxes easy. We offer three ways to pay your taxes, and no matter which one you choose, rest assured that we’ve made it quick and simple.

Here’s the lowdown on each payment method. Choose whichever is most convenient for you!

Direct Debit

  • Also known as EFW (Electronic Funds Withdrawal), this is the fastest, easiest way to pay your HVUT, and you can only do it if you E-file!
  • EFW means the IRS will initiate a direct debit from your bank account. In order to do this, they’ll need your bank routing number and account number. Both can be located along the bottom of one of your checks.
  • When paying with direct debit, the IRS will not process your return on a weekend or holiday, but on the next business day. For immediate processing of your return, pay by Check or Money Order (see below).

EFTPS

  • The Electronic Federal Tax Payment System may be a mouthful, but it’s another free and convenient way to pay your HVUT.
  • A free service provided by the US Dept. of the Treasury, you must register with this system 5-7 business days prior to your first payment. Register for free by visiting http://www.eftps.gov or by calling 1-800-555-4477. When you enroll, be sure to have your EIN, bank account, bank routing number, and address and name as they appear on IRS documents.
  • What’s so cool about EFTPS? You can schedule a business payment up to 120 days in advance. But keep in mind that you can’t schedule same-day payments. So be sure to schedule at least 1 business day prior to your tax due date!

Check or Money Order

  • This is the only way to pay if you need your stamped Schedule 1 on a weekend or holiday.
  • When paying by check or money order, you must submit a completed 2290-V Payment Voucher. Here’s the good news. ExpressTruckTax creates one for you! It’s page 5 of your completed 2290. Just detach the bottom portion, paper clip to your payment (do not staple them together!), and mail. How easy was that?!
  • “Where do I mail it to,” you ask? (Yes, I can hear your thoughts!) Instructions are on your voucher, but for the sake of convenience, here’s the address:

    Internal Revenue Service,
    P.O. Box 804525,
    Cincinnati, OH 45280-4525

You’ll notice that a credit card is not one of the available payment options. That’s because the IRS no longer accepts tax payments via credit card. You will, however, need a credit card when E-filing to pay our $9.90 E-filing fee, so keep your card on hand!

Of course, if you need any assistance on the payment page, or along any other step of your E-filing journey, just reach out to our support team! They can help you choose which payment option suits you best. Just call 704.234.6005 or for 24/7 assistance email support@expresstrucktax.com.

Why you need to file IRS Form 2290(Federal Heavy Vehicle Use Tax Return)

0

To file your HVUT with the IRS using Form 2290, it is very important that you keep accurate records, just like you would when filing any other type of tax return. It is crucial for anyone filing form 2290 to maintain their records for at least the prior 3 years for any taxable highway vehicles registered to them. For fleet owners and small trucking companies who have filed form 2290 in the past, it is wise to always keep the 2290 records on hand, as one never knows when IRS inspection may take place. It is even important to save these returns if they are only for a part of a year. In the case of a suspended vehicle (public highway use was less than 5,000 miles/year) it is still necessary to keep records of Form 2290’s filed for them as well.

You will need to gather the following information before filing form 2290 to accelerate the filing process.  You will need a description of all vehicles for which you are filing as well as a VIN (Vehicle Identification Number) for each one. You will also need to know the gross taxable weight of the vehicle.  It is also necessary to report the date the vehicle was acquired, as well as the name and address of the previous owner. The fist use month for the taxable period is also required for reporting. If a vehicle is considered to be suspended, keep a record of actual highway mileage. If the vehicle is an agricultural vehicle, then keep accurate records of the number of miles it is driven on a farm or field.

Keeping proper records of your 2290 information will be a great help to you in the unfortunate event of an audit.  It will also make the task of filing this form much easier.

ExpressTruckTax.com is an IRS authorized E-File provider who can help you file form 2290 as well as keep secure online records of previously filed form 2290’s. For more information on the 2290 filing process, heavy vehicle use tax, IRS payment methods, etc visit the Express Truck Tax website or call our Truck Tax experts at 704-234-6005. You can also email any questions to support@ExpressTruckTax.com.

What Do I Need to E-File IRS Form 2290?

0
As you may know, the New Tax period for filing IRS Form 2290 for HVUT (Heavy Vehicle Use Tax) begins on July 1st.

As you may know, it is now possible to E-File your 2290 from your own computer quickly, easily, and securely.

If you have not ever E-Filed a tax return before, there is no need to worry. The E-Filing process is actually easier than paper filing. We at ExpressTruckTax.com also have a dedicated team of customer support professionals available to help you over the phone, email, or online chat (available in English or Spanish).  All you need to File this IRS Form is your EIN (Employee Identification Number), Address, Phone Number, VIN’s (Vehicle Identification Numbers), and Gross Vehicle Weight and our program will take care of the rest.

There have also been a few changes this year in the filing process.  The IRS will no longer be mailing out paper forms to drivers.  This a very significant change, because you will not be able to rely on the IRS to send you the Form to remind you to file. This year, no one will receive that form via postal mail.  The IRS Form 2290 is due between July 1, 2011 - August 31, 2011.  If you E-File with ExpressTruckTax.com you will receive email reminders each yearso that we can keep you informed even though the IRS may not.

Filing a Form 2290 does not need to slow you down. If you use ExpressTrucktax.com your filing process can be as quick as just a few minutes!  That sure beats driving to the IRS office.

Expected delay for filing IRS Form 2290(2011-12)

0
The annual filing season of IRS Form 2290 for 2011-12 may be delayed.  IRS will not accept any paper format or e-filing at this time. An announcement on when it will be in place is expected to be made by IRS.

A meeting was conducted by IRS regarding the extension of time for tax filings for Form 2290.  Right now, the tax legislation is tied up in Congress. A new legislation need to be passed before IRS can collect the 2011-12 Form 2290 tax for the entire year.

Normal tax filing is not going to happen because of issues within the congress. IRS may wait as long as possible so that a single tax return is all that will be necessary for the 2011-12 tax Year. However a backup plan is in place so that a 3 month tax (July, August and September) can be collected by August 31st filing deadline. When the new legislation is passed, it will determine what happens for the reminder of the 2011/12 tax year.
