2290s And EINs: Everything You Need To Know

0
The Heavy Vehicle Use Tax season is coming right at us at full speed! You can try to jump out of the way, but you’ll still need to file your Form 2290 by the August 31st deadline. Don’t let the deadline run you over. Be prepared and file as soon as possible to avoid having your form rejected. For example, it’s very important to know that you’re required to have an EIN.

What To Remember About Your EIN

Your EIN or your Employer Identification Number is also known as the Federal Tax Identification Number and the Federal Employer Identification Number or FEIN. EINs are assigned to businesses operating in the United States in order to identify them for tax reporting purposes. Each EIN consists of a unique 9 digit number.

This is important because you are required by the IRS to have an EIN to complete your 2290. They need it to identify you to correctly verify that you’re filing for yourself and to prevent fraud.

There may be some confusion when it comes to EINs and Social Security Numbers (SSN) because they’re both 9 digit identification codes. However, EINs are used to identify businesses, and social security numbers are used to identify individuals. Also, the IRS used to accept SSNs in place of EINs on Form 2290s, but that is no longer the case. If you use your SSN in the EIN field your form will be rejected.

Also, when it comes to the information on your 2290 such as your business name and address, it will need to match what the IRS has on file or it could be rejected. You can see if your information matches what the IRS has on file by contacting the IRS directly at (800) 829-4933.

If you don’t have an EIN you can apply for online for free with the IRS here. Once you finish applying you will instantly receive your 9 digit EIN, but please keep in mind that it will take about 15 days for your EIN to update in the IRS’s system and your 2290 could be rejected during this time.

Each EIN is is a unique code that never expires. However, as a sole proprietor you may need a new EIN if you’re subject to a bankruptcy proceeding, you incorporate, you take in new partners and operate as a partnership, or you purchase or inherit an existing business.

How To File Your 2290

Why wait when you can go ahead and knock out your 2290 today? Go ahead and pre-file online with ExpressTruckTax or the ExpressTruckTax App now. Simply follow the step-by-step filing guide to instantly complete your form. As a result, your Form 2290 will be transmitted to the IRS as soon as they begin accepting returns and you’ll receive a copy of your stamped Schedule 1 in the blink of an eye.

You can also call TSNAmerica at 803.386.0320 to pre-file your Form 2290 today over the phone. Simply give them a call and an outstanding US-based representative will file your 2290 for you! It’s that easy. Your Form 2290 will be transmitted to the IRS once the filing season opens and you’ll receive a copy of your stamped Schedule 1 via email.

The ExpressTruckTax App Makes E-Filing Form 2290 Easy

0
There’s one solid fact about truckers that can’t be disproven. They’re on the move a lot, traveling all across different states. This can make things a little tricky when certain tax forms are due, like Heavy Vehicle Use Tax Form 2290.

How can you file while you’re out on the road? Do you stop somewhere to paper file? Do you hunt down a computer and wifi? Why not simplify things by using the ExpressTruckTax app to File your 2290 in a matter of minutes?

The ExpressTruckTax App

All you have to do to get started is download the free ExpressTruckTax app to your smartphone or tablet, then create a free account with your email address and personal password. As a result, you’ll have access to everything you can do on the ExpressTruckTax site and more right in the palm of your hand.

A few of the ExpressTruckTax app features include receiving a push notification once the IRS accepts your return, managing multiple businesses and EIN’s under one account, and accessing a copy of your stamped Schedule 1 anytime. It also allows you to file your Form 2290 at any time from any location!

You can file for the current 2016-17 season right now, or you can beat the rush by pre-filing for the 2017 season before it opens on July first. Your form will be transmitted directly to the IRS as soon as they begin accepting returns and you’ll receive a copy of your stamped Schedule 1 via email, almost instantly.

How To E-File With The ExpressTruckTax App

Once you’ve downloaded the app and logged into your account you’ll start by selecting if you would like to file for the 2016 tax year or pre-file for the 2017 season. Then you’ll enter the basic information for your business, like the name and address. Your personal information will be fine if you’re a sole proprietor.

Then you’ll need to enter your EIN or Employee Identification Number. You’ll need an EIN to complete your form if you need one you can apply with the IRS for one online. It will take about 15 days for your EIN to be entered in the e-filing system.

Don’t worry about doing any complicated calculations yourself, because we will automatically calculate the amount of Heavy Vehicle Use Tax you owe for you, so you don’t under or over pay. Then you can pay the amount you owe to the IRS via direct debit or electronic funds withdrawal, EFTPS, or with a check or money order.

After you’ve paid the IRS we will perform an audit check on your form to catch any basic errors and we will present you with a summary check of your information to double check and make sure that you entered all of your information correctly.

Last but not least you’ll electronically sign your form with a 5 digit code of your choice and transmit it directly to the IRS. Then once the IRS stamps your Schedule 1, generally within minutes you’ll receive a copy via email.

How Does Form 8849 Effect My 2290?

0

Alright, 2290 season is coming, and along with your Heavy Vehicle Use Tax (HVUT) comes a lot of questions and sometimes a little confusion. Sometimes while filing your Form 2290 you might see information about Form 8849, but what’s that? Do you need to be concerned with it? Today we’re here with the 8849 facts to answer your questions.

Form 8849

Form 8849 is the Claim or Refund of Excise Taxes Form. Excise taxes are the taxes paid on goods when they’re purchased and they’re often included in the price. An example of one of these goods is gasoline, hints your IFTA tax. Also, excise taxes include activities, such as highway usage by trucks.

Highway usage?! Now that might ring a bell because if you drive a qualifying vehicle of 55,000 pounds or more then you are required to file Form 2290 in order to get a copy of your stamped Schedule 1.

After filing your Form 2290 you can File Form 8849 to claim a credit or a refund on the amount of  HVUT paid. Anyone can file this form if they need to claim a refund or a credit.

You can claim credits or refunds for vehicles that were stolen, sold, or destroyed. You can also claim credits for vehicles that were only used for 5,000 miles or less on public highways and 7,000 miles or less for agricultural vehicles used during the tax period.

Just remember, before you can File Form 8849 you need to file your Form 2290 and pay any Heavy Vehicle Taxes owed to the IRS for the current tax season first.

All you need to File Form 8849 is your name and address, but it needs to match what the IRS has on file. You can verify your information by calling the IRS directly at 1-800-829-1040.

You will need your EIN number. If you’ve already filed your 2290 then you should already have your Employee Identification Number, as the IRS requires you to have one to complete your return.

If you haven’t filed your 2290 and you need an EIN you can apply for one online with the IRS. It will take about 15 days for the EIN to become active if the e-filing system and forms may be rejected during that time.

Also, you will need the information for the vehicle that you’re claiming a refund for with details as to why you’re claiming a credit or refund, such as if it was stolen, sold, or destroyed with the date that the incident occurred.

Pre-File With TSNAmerica

The faster you pre-file your Form 2290 then the faster you can claim a refund or credit with Form 8849. Call our sister company TSNAmerica at 803.386.0320 and they’ll file your Form 2290 for you over the phone. Your return will be transmitted to the IRS on July 1st unless you would like it sent at a later date. The process is as easy as making a simple phone call.

5 Common HVUT E-Filing Mistakes

0

Taxes are already confusing enough. You have to know what form to file, when to file, how to file, and more. To make matters worse even if you file your form on time, it can still be rejected for simple mistakes! Then you have to go through the process of correcting your form.

Even though ExpressTruckTax has made that e-filing process and amendment process incredibly easy, with the HVUT season approaching, we want your form to get accepted the first time! So, check out these common HVUT mistakes to avoid!

Common HVUT Mistakes To Avoid

1. Entering Your VIN Incorrectly. Slow down, you need to make sure that all of your information gets entered correctly. Vehicle Identification Numbers consist of 17 characters that include but numbers and letters, so they can easily get mixed up.

Plus, VINs have incredibly small print. We often find ourselves squinting to reference our own! It might be hard to see if something is a 1 or an I, or a 0 or an O, so bust out your glasses to take a really good, close look at your VIN. After you enter it on your form double check it to makes sure that it’s correct.

2. Waiting too long to get your EIN. Sometimes people don’t realize that they need an EIN or Federal Tax Identification Number to file their 2290. Your EIN also serves as your Employment Identification Number.

You can apply for an EIN with the IRS directly, but keep in mind that it takes at least 15 days for your EIN to be added to the system. So, if you file your 2290 and apply for your EIN too close to the deadline, then your form could be rejected. If you need an EIN don’t wait til the last minute!

Some people ignore the fact that they need an EIN and put their SSN number in the field. The IRS no longer accepts Social Security Numbers in place of EINs!

3. Mismatching mistakes. Keep in mind that your business name, address, and EIN has to match what the IRS has on file. You can call the IRS directly to verify your information.

4. Don’t enter the wrong tax year. It’s really easy to put the wrong year on checks, dates, important forms, and more! While you can e-file for 2290’s for previous years, if you want to file for the current tax year, which is July 2016 - June 2017, make sure you have those dates correctly selected.

5. Filing is put off until the last minute. No one wants to deal with taxes, so they wait as long as they can to file them, which usually results in filing too late or finding out that your form needs corrections that you don’t have enough time to make before the deadline.

However, in reality, it’s extremely easy to e-file Form 2290. With ExpressTruckTax you can follow the step-by-step guide to easily handle your HVUT in a matter of minutes and receive your stamped Schedule 1 via email almost instantly.

You don’t even need a computer to file. Download the free ExpressTruckTax app to any iOS or Android Device to quickly and easily e-file your 2290 at any time, from any location. This makes it super easy to file even while you’re out on the road.

But wait, you don’t even have to wait! Go ahead and take care of your HVUT today by calling our sister company TSNAmerica at 803.386.0320 to pre-file over the phone today. All you have to do is call them, and they’ll file your Form 2290 for you, and transmit it the IRS on July 1st! As soon as the IRS stamps your Schedule 1 you’ll receive it via email!

We'll Handle All Your E-Filing 2290 Needs

0

Tax season is barreling on down the highway, so buckle up, because it’s not stopping. A few IFTA deadlines like the 4th quarter IFTA report deadline have already passed, but more deadlines are on their way. If your first used month for your new vehicle was in January then your HVUT form 2290 is due by February 28th.

But wait, What’s HVUT Form 2290?

The IRS HVUT Form 2290 is for the Heavy Vehicle Use Tax and the form 2290 is what truckers need to fill out if they own a vehicle with a taxable gross weight of 55k pounds or more. Truckers are required to file this form online in order to receive an electronic copy of their stamped Schedule 1.

A Stamped Schedule 1 serves as proof of compliance with the HVUT. It’s used at DMVs so you can renew your tags, renew your registration for IFTA, IRP, or USR, and prove that you paid your taxes, which can be extremely helpful if you’re ever audited.

The money that you pay for this tax goes to the public roads. It’s for construction, to fix, and to maintain public highways that heavy vehicles carrying loads often frequent. Therefore it makes your job a little easier, by providing safe routes with paved roads and safe bridges. Plus, better roads have less wear and tear on your vehicle.

E-Filing Your HVUT with ExpressTruckTax

Now you have to file your HVUT Form 2209 on an annual basis per each vehicle that you own and qualifies for the tax. The tax is due for new vehicles the last day of the 2nd month after the month that the vehicle is first used. Then the tax needs to be renewed annually by August 31st.

ExpressTruckTax is a great option if you need to quickly file your form 2290 because it’s one of the cheapest. Each file is only $9.90. ExpressTruckTax is also extremely safe and secure, your information will be protected.

Now a cheap price doesn’t mean ExpressTruckTax skimps out of true value because ExpressTruckTax provides easy to follow instructions to help you quickly fill out your form 2290. Then you’ll receive your stamped Schedule within minutes via fax, text, or email. You’ll also be notified via text message when your stamped Schedule 1 is ready.

Plus, you aren’t alone. The ExpressTruckTax dedicated support team is always standing by to help. We’re more than happy to assist you with any questions that you may have, so please don’t hesitate to contact us via live chat, phone, or email.

Also, at ExpressTruckTax we understand that accidents happen. If the IRS rejects your form we will notify you via email with notes as to why your form was rejected and instructions on how to correct your form. You can resubmit your form 2290 as many times as you need to.

What's the Deal with the Stamped Schedule 1?

0
Stamped Schedule 1
Stamped Schedule 1
When you e-file heavy vehicle use tax, you get your 2290 stamped schedule 1.

But what’s the deal with the stamped schedule 1? We’ll break it down for you.

What is the Stamped Schedule 1?

To put it frankly, the stamped schedule 1 is your Proof of Payment!

If you file by paper with the IRS, you can expect to receive your stamped Schedule 1 within 6 weeks after they receive your form 2290.

How You Get Your Stamped Schedule 1

Once the IRS receives and checks your return with their database, you receive your stamped schedule 1. Your schedule 1 will show an IRS e-file watermark with the date the return was received and processed. Your schedule 1 will be accepted by all DOT’s, DMV’s, and other federal authorities.

We can also send updates about your schedule 1 via text and fax - and we can even notify your company or carrier! ExpressTruckTax automatically emails your stamped schedule 1 to you.

Understanding the Stamped Schedule 1:

First off, how do you know if your stamped Schedule 1 is authentic? Well, the IRS digital e-file watermark tells you everything you need to know!. You can always contact our customer support team if you have questions, though!

When you e-file IRS form 2290, the IRS stamps it with a digital watermark. This digital schedule 1 is your official proof of payment, and all DMV locations are required to accept this document.

Of course, if you have any questions about e-filing and receiving your stamped schedule 1, contact our US-based customer service squad!

VIN Corrections 101: Fixing Your 2290s

0
So you filed Form 2290 and received your Stamped Schedule 1, but now you’ve discovered you used  the wrong vehicle identification number. What do you do?

Don’t worry, mistakes happen in the realm of tax filings, which is why we have 2290 Amendments. Let’s be real, your VIN is a scramble of 17 alphanumeric characters—sometimes you might hit the wrong key. And trust us, we’ve seen a few 5’s that look like the letter S more than once on a VIN. To err is human!

If you filed your heavy vehicle use tax with ExpressTruckTax, you can e-file a VIN correction FREE of charge. Since your original filing was with us, we think we can help you out. And if you used another service or paper filed your 2290, you can also e-file a VIN correction for a small fee.

How does it work? Well, VIN corrections can be only filed for taxable or suspended vehicles, not for credit vehicles or prior year suspended vehicles. When you file a VIN correction for Form 2290, you can't combine it with credits claimed on the same form. Also, the wrong VIN must have been paid for in the original form 2290. Otherwise, the IRS will assign penalties in addition to the actual tax.

How do you e-file your VIN correction? After logging in to ExpressTruckTax, click Start New Return and you’ll be prompted with three options. From there, you need to select Form 2290 Amendments.

After that, you are prompted to choose between a VIN Correction, a Taxable Gross Weight Increase, and Mileage Exceeded. Underneath VIN Correction, click Start.

From that point on, your options split between previous filers and new customers. If you filed your 2290 with us before, this is where you can e-file your VIN correction for free!

After that, it’s only a matter of entering the incorrect VIN and updating it to the correct VIN. For a more detailed explanation, check out this video!

So don’t forget, if you filed with ExpressTruckTax, you can e-file a VIN correction with no strings attached. Now, we do need your credit card information for verification purposes, but the service itself is free. After you correct your VIN, you will get your corrected Schedule 1 in minutes. Don’t forget, if you didn’t file your HVUT with us, you can still pay for a VIN correction.

If for any reason you have any questions about e-filing your VIN correction, our friendly customer support team can help you out! Reach us by phone at 704.234.6005, email at support@ExpressTruckTax.com, or live chat with us on our website!

Penalties For Not Filing Form 2290 HVUT

0
The heavy vehicle use tax or HVUT is a fee assessed annually on heavy vehicles operating on public highways at registered gross weights equal to or exceeding 55,000 pounds. The current tax period is July 1, 2013-June 30, 2013.  The annual deadline to file for all vehicles is August 31st, but since the 31st is on a Saturday and Monday is Labor Day, the deadline has been extended to Tuesday, September 3, 2013.

The penalty for not filing the IRS Form 2290 by the deadline is equal to 4.5% of total tax due.  This amount is assessed on a monthly basis up to five months. Those who choose not to make their HVUT payment also face an additional monthly 0.5% of the tax due penalty. Additional interest charges of 0.54% per month accrue as well. Within 5 months of not filing and paying the HVUT tax, the HVUT liability that was originally $550 will be over $700.  In addition to the monetary federal penalties, states suspend the registrations of vehicles for which proof of HVUT payment has not been provided. So not only will the taxpayer owe more money, they will also be unable to renew their registrations, so they will be unable to work. HVUT evasion penalties can even be as severe as fines and incarceration.

There are a few instances where a vehicle is exempt from paying the HVUT tax, even if most of those instances, a Form 2290 is required to be filed even if no tax is due.  You can find detailed information on the IRS site at The Trucking Tax Center.

You can E-File your Form 2290 quickly and easily at ExpressTruckTax.com and receive your Schedule 1 within minutes.  Your Schedule 1 serves as proof of payment for your HVUT.  For more information or to get started today, visit ExpressTruckTax.com or contact our Express Tax Support Center in Rock Hill, SC at 704-234-6005 or email us at support@ExpressTruckTax.com.  We have Spanish Support too!

HVUT Late Filing Penalties & Interest

0

Penalties can be incurred for failing to file Form 2290 returns or pay Heavy vehicle Use Taxes when they are due. There are also penalties for filing false or fraudulent returns. These penalties are imposed in addition to interest charges for late payments.

Penalties for HVUT non-compliance are costly to motor carriers. The penalty for failing to file IRS Form 2290 by August 31st is equal to 4.5% of total tax due, assessed on a monthly basis up to five months. Late filers not making an HVUT payment also face an additional monthly penalty equal to 0.5% of total tax due. Additional interest charges of 0.54% per month accrue as well.

Based on these rates, an HVUT liability that was originally $550 would climb to over $700 by the end of the five-month period of delinquency. In addition to these federal penalties, states will suspend the registrations of vehicles for which proof of HVUT payment has not been provided.

So avoid these penalties by E-Filing your Form 2290 today.  For more information or to get started, visit ExpressTruckTax.com or contact our friendly US Based Express Tax Support Center in Rock Hill, SC at 704-234-6005 or email us at support@ExpressTruckTax.com.  We have Spanish Support too!

Federal Heavy Vehicle Use Tax-IRS Form 2290 - Stamped Schedule 1

0
Even though there is not a way to e-file Heavy Vehicle Use Taxes through the IRS website, the IRS has authorized Express Truck Tax to file this return because they have passed the IRS Assurance Testing System (ATS) and/or Business Acceptance Testing (BATS) requirements for Software Developers of electronic business returns to the IRS. An IRS Form 2290 is not complete unless the Schedule 1 has officially been stamped by the Internal Revenue Service. The Form 2290 handles Heavy Vehicle Use Taxes, and the Schedule 1 is part of the IRS Form. To ensure that this is handled properly so that all Heavy Vehicle Use Taxes are reported and paid, there are several options. This form can be mailed, taken to the IRS directly, or the most efficient method: e-filing.

If you choose to mail the form to the IRS, it can take weeks for the IRS to respond with the official Stamped Schedule 1 in the mail. Because particularly if it is a busy time for the IRS. This is precious time that should not be wasted because the Stamped Schedule 1 is required in order to register the vehicle with the state DMV.

If you choose to actually deliver the form to the IRS office, you will be forced to wait in line for a representative to review the form and then stamp the Schedule 1. With this option, you are at the mercy of the IRS. The nearest office could be many miles away, and once you are there is no way to know how long it could take. People have reported that on a busy day at the IRS office, you may have to wait in line for as long as 6 hours.

For these reasons it is easiest to use an online e-filing tool such as Express Truck Tax for your 2290 filing needs. Since it is authorized by the IRS for e-filing, that shows it is a trustworthy and reliable service. Another benefit to using this particular service is that they have a team of Truck Tax experts that can take calls, emails, and online chats regarding any Truck Tax question you may have. For more information on the 2290 filing process, heavy vehicle use tax, IRS payment methods, etc. visit the Express Truck Tax website or call our Truck Tax experts at their US-Based Customer Support Center at 704-234-6005. You can also email any questions to support@ExpressTruckTax.com and the experts will respond within 24 hours.

E-file HVUT (IRS Form 2290) for 2011-2012

0
The 2011-2012 Tax Period is here and the IRS is now accepting the Form 2290 for the new tax year! ExpressTruckTax.com can help you get the form as quickly as possible without all the headaches and stress of waiting in the IRS office or sending the form in the mail. Express Truck Tax has already helped thousands of others to E-File their Heavy Vehicle Use Taxes (HVUT) with Form 2290.

The everyday low prices can help you save money! With the most experienced HVUT e-filing staff, award-winning US-based customer service, and pricing to fit any fleet, it’s no surprise that ExpressTruckTax is the leader in HVUT E-Filing!

For more reasons as to why eFiling is the best way to File HVUT, here are the following points:

Although the IRS still accepts physical tax returns by postal mail, it does appear to be moving away from that and closer to requiring E-Filing more and more. One particular example of this is IRS Form 2290, which is used to collect what is referred to as the Heavy Vehicle Use Tax or HVUT. It is a fee that the IRS requires all vehicles with registered gross weights equal to or exceeding 55,000 pounds to pay annually on heavy vehicles operating on public highways.

The IRS has already made it mandatory for all Trucking Companies or other industries that have to file a Form 2290 for 25 or more heavy vehicles to E-File the return as opposed to paper filing it. This IRS Form contains a Schedule 1 which must be stamped by the IRS before the vehicle can be registered with the state Department of Motor Vehicles. This form can be mailed to the IRS, which can take up to several weeks to process. It could also be taken directly to the IRS office, which can take several hours of your day. This must be accompanied by a proof of EFTPS payment.

This form must be filed annually, for each taxable vehicle that is used on public highways during the current period. The Current Period begins on July 1st and ends on June 30th of the next year. A Form 2290 must also be filed once a vehicle is placed in service. The due date for each month is the last day of the following month. For example: if a vehicle is placed in service on October 3rd, the Form 2290 will be due on November 30th.

Even though there are thousands, if not millions, of Heavy Vehicles that are required to file HVUT the IRS still requires everyone to either mail the Form 2290 to the IRS or actually come to the IRS office. Fortunately there is an easier way that has recently become available. www.ExpressTruckTax.com allows you to fill out your IRS Form 2290 online and send it to the IRS electronically! This way you can get a stamped schedule 1 in about 10 minutes. Express Truck Tax is authorized by the IRS to file Form 2290. The taxpayer will then receive the schedule 1 via email or fax as soon as the IRS processes the form. The form will then be watermarked by the IRS instead of an actual physical stamp.
