Top 10 Questions You Have About The Heavy Use Tax

0
trucking on the road after his form 2290 filing is complete
The Heavy Vehicle Use Tax or Form 2290 filing season is officially here! Every day at ExpressTruckTax, we take thousands of calls from truckers just like you. To help you get ready here are the top 10 questions you have about the heavy use tax.

Top 10 Questions ExpressTruckTax is Asked About The Heavy Use Tax

1. When is Form 2290 payment due?
For most people, it’s due on 8/31/2018. But why run the risk of forgetting and facing IRS penalties?! File today with ExpressTruckTax and be set until 2019.

Your IRS Form 2290 is due on the last day of the month following your truck’s first month of use during the reporting period. So if your truck was on the road last July your Form 2290 filing deadline is August 31, 2018. When you file your IRS Form 2290 with ExpressTruckTax you will receive you stamped Schedule 1 in a matter of minutes.

2. Do I need an EIN?
Yes, even without employees, you must have an EIN.

As an owner-operator, you will need an employer identification number or EIN. It is used by the IRS to identify your trucking business for tax purposes. Contact the sister product of ExpressTruckTax, TSNAmerica to apply for your EIN over the phone. However, don’t wait to apply because it can take up to 10 days to become active.

3. When does my 2290 expire?
The end of June, unless you’re special. Your Form 2290 due date and expiration date varies based on when you purchased your vehicle. Your best bet is to call ExpressTruckTax at (704) 234-6005 for more information.

4. Can I transfer my truck tag?
Sure, but you can’t transfer your 2290. When you purchase a new rig, you will file Form 2290 for your new vehicle then adjust your tax credits using Form 8849 Schedule 6. At ExpressTruckTax you can go ahead and file Form 8849 Schedule 6 to claim your refund after completing your Form 2290 filing. You will report your new vehicle for a pro-rated tax period based on when you first used it. It will take approximately 4 to 6 weeks for the IRS to process your refund.

5. Is my Schedule 1 still good?
It is different for everyone, but you can look at your current Stamped Schedule 1 to find out. Or simply contact ExpressTruckTax and we will look up your previous tax year information.

6. Do you offer Spanish support?
Si, habla Espanol.

At ExpressTruckTax we offer bilingual support in both English and Spanish. Our support team located in historic downtown Rock Hill, SC is available by phone, email, and live chat.

7. If I file my Form 2290 now, so I have to pay now?
If you select ‘check or money order’ during filing, your Form 2290 tax payment is due 8/31/2018.

Or if you would like to pay during the ExpressTruckTax Form 2290 filing process, you can do so using your debit or credit card. For more information on credit or debit card payments click here

8. Where are you located?

How to E-File Form 2290 Online?

After signing up for your free ExpressTruckTax account, you will enter the necessary information for your business like the name, address, and EIN (Employer Identification Number).

You will need information about your heavy vehicles to complete your IRS Form 2290, such as its WIN or Vehicle Identification Number and taxable gross weight. Remember that suspended vehicles must be included.

Have You Heard About the New IRS Form 2290 Payment Options?

0
Have You Heard About the New IRS Form 2290 Payment OptionsIt may be hard to believe, but it’s already time to start filing your 2018-19 2290! If you’re currently thinking, “Wait, 2290 season doesn’t start until July?” then you would be correct, partially. Since we’ve worked hand-in-hand with the IRS for more than ten years now, we are excited to offer IRS Form 2290 online filing for the 2018-19 tax year ahead of schedule. This is exclusive for ExpressTruckTax customers so you can get back to enjoying time with your family instead of worrying about filing your 2290 tax form.

IRS Payment Methods for Form 2290

When you file Form 2290 online with ExpressTruckTax, you’ll follow a step-by-step guide to complete your form in a matter of minutes. Once you get to the IRS payment step, you can choose between 4 different payment options based on the most convenient method for you. Yes, four! We’ve heard you and have added the option to pay your tax with a credit or debit card!

Credit or Debit Card

Starting in July 2018 the IRS will allow you to pay 2290 with a credit card or debit!

For more information on credit or debit card payments, go to IRS.gov/PayByCard.

Direct Debit or Electronic Funds Withdrawal (EFW)

Provide your banking information (account and routing number) through ExpressTruckTax’s safe and secure system to authorize the IRS to debit the amount you owe from your bank account. It is important that your account has enough funds to cover the amount you owe.

The amount is generally withdrawn in 24 to 48 hours after providing authorization. Keep in mind that this involves your banking information, not your credit/debit card number.

If you need to cancel your payment contact IRS payment services at 1.888.353.4537 at least 2 days before the payment date.

EFTPS (Electronic Federal Tax Payment System) is the electronic tax payment system used by the IRS. If you choose this payment option you will be taken to the EFTPS site, and you’ll create a free account. Please keep in mind that it can take up to 10 business days to establish this type of account.

To pay the IRS through EFTPS, you will provide your bank account information and verify that the IRS is allowed to withdraw your tax payment from that account. In order to make your payment by the deadline, you must schedule it before 8 p.m. the day before the deadline for it to be received by the IRS in time.

Check or Money Order

You can also pay the amount of HVUT you owe with a Check or Money Order. If you choose this option you will need to print your completed payment voucher, 2290-V, from page 11 of your completed 2290 Form and mail to the IRS by the August 31st deadline.

Make your check or money order payable to the United States Treasury. Also, you will need to include your name, address, EIN, the date, and the words “IRS Form 2290” with your payment.

Do not staple your payment and voucher together.
Have You Heard About the New IRS Form 2290 Payment Options?

Send your payment and voucher 2290-V to:
Internal Revenue Service
P.O. Box 804525,
Cincinnati, OH 45280-4525

Remember, never send cash through the mail.

Important: If you have already paid your HVUT via Direct Debit or EFW and received a letter from the IRS saying they were unable to debit the funds there are a few likely causes:

- Your account and routing number were entered into ExpressTruckTax incorrectly. Even entering one character incorrectly will prevent the IRS from being able to withdraw the amount you owe.
- The IRS tried to debit your account, but you had insufficient funds. If you are even as little as 50 cents short then the IRS will not debit the funds.

If you receive a letter from the IRS saying they could not withdraw the funds from the bank account provided then you will need to send a check or money order to the IRS in order to pay the amount you owe by the August 31st deadline.

10 Things Truckers Need To Know About IRS Form 2290

0
IRS Form 2290 pre-filing season is officially here and the regular filing season is on the horizon. So to help get you ready here are the ten things truckers need to know about IRS Form 2290.

Time and time again truckers filing their 2290 online tend to ask the same questions and make the same mistakes when it comes to their heavy vehicle use taxes. So let’s go over them, so they are fresh in your mind when you pre-file or e-file later this year.

1. Is my vehicle subject to the HVUT/Form 2290?

You are subject to HVUT/Form 2290 if you are registering a vehicle in your name as an owner-operator or self-employed driver, it weighs more than 55,000 pounds, and you are using it on public roads. The Heavy Vehicle Use Tax applies to both interstate and intrastate drivers.

2. If I am based in Canada or Mexico, does the HVUT apply?

Yes, if you drive your vehicle in the United States. You will need to file a 2290 Form 2018 and pay any owed taxes. You will also need to carry proof of tax compliance when entering the U.S. as well.

3. When is Form 2290 due in 2018?

IRS Form 2290 returns are due on the last day of the month following your vehicle’s first month of use during the reporting period. That means if your vehicle was on the road last July (2017) the deadline for filing is August 31, 2018.

If your vehicle goes into service during the reporting period, you will need to file an additional Form 2290, Schedule 1, and pay the tax amount. For example, if you purchased a vehicle in November 2018, you are required to put the vehicle in your name making its first month of use December. In this case, you will need to file an additional Form 2290, Schedule 1, and pay owed taxes on or before December 31, 2019. This is a partial year filing and will be a reduced tax amount.

4. Can I suspend my Heavy Vehicle Use Tax?

You can apply for a suspension of the Heavy Vehicle Use Tax if you expect to drive your vehicle less than 5,000 miles during the year (7,500 miles for agricultural vehicles).

However, you are still required to file IRS Form 2290 even though you do not have a tax payment. If you do end up driving more than expected, you must file an amendment to your original 2290 and pay taxes.

5. Am I required to file my 2290 Form online?

Only if you have 25 or more qualified vehicles. If you do, the IRS does not require you to file 2290 online. However, the IRS highly encourages all taxpayers to file and pay online with an IRS-authorized e-file provider, like ExpressTruckTax. Hint hint…..

6. How can I claim a credit?

Trucker starting his 2290 pre-filing with TSNAmerica Now is the time for you to claim any credits you earned last year. The credits can be claimed using a couple of different methods.

If you ended up driving your vehicle less than 5,00 miles (or 7,500 for agricultural vehicles) you can claim a credit. Or if your vehicle was stolen or destroyed last year, you can claim a credit. For more information, I would visit the IRS website for the full list of situations.

7. Can I claim a refund on my IRS Form 2290?

Yes, if your credit exceeds your taxes owed on your 2018-2019 filing, you will need to file a refund. This can be done by filing IRS Form 8849, Claim for Refund Excise Taxes.

8. What do I need to register my vehicle?

Proof of your HVUT payment is required before you register your vehicles. You will not be registered unless you can provide your stamped Schedule 1.

9. How do I pay 2990 online?

When you file 2290 online with ExpressTruckTax, you can pay via the Electronic Federal Tax Payment System (EFTPS), or by check/money order.

10. Where can I find more information about IRS Form 2290?

You can check out our blog page for more information concerning pre-filing and the upcoming 2290 season. Check out our FAQ page which answers more questions you might have about Form 2290. Or you can find more information via the IRS publication “Instructions for Form 2290.”

Determining First Use Month

0

When E-Filing Form 2290 with ExpressTruckTax, you will be asked to provide the first use date for the vehicle. This dates refers to the time when the vehicle was placed in service during the tax period.  If the vehicle has been placed in service for  previous years and will continue to be in service this year, the first use month will be July.  This is because the tax period for Heavy Vehicle Use Taxes begins in July and ends in June.

If a new vehicle is placed in service during the tax period, the first use month will be the month in which the vehicle was first used. If a vehicle was only used for part of the tax period, the tax will be prorated based on the number of months the vehicle was actually used. For example, if a vehicle was used on January 27th, it will be taxed as though it was used the entire month, regardless of the fact it was only used for a couple of days, and the tax will be based on 6 months, instead of the full year.

To E-File the Form 2290 online now, go to ExpressTruckTax.com or contact our Express Tax Support Center in Rock Hill, SC at 704-234-6005 or email us at support@ExpressTruckTax.com.  We have Spanish Support too!
