The One Thing Truck Drivers Cannot Escape

0
Taxes can be confusing. First of all, there are a ton of different returns to remember from income tax returns, IFTA returns, Heavy Vehicle Use Taxes (HVUT), and more. Second of all, each of these different returns have different due dates to remember.

The HVUT Form 2290 deadline can be especially tricky because it can be due at different times of the year. However, don’t let it grind your gears because we are here to go over the deadline so you will know exactly when to file.

Your Form 2290 Deadline

Alright, so the HVUT Form 2290 tax period runs from July 1 to June 30 of the following year. The current HVUT tax period began on July 1, 2017 and will end on June 30, 2018. This is important to know because the HUVT deadline is based on your vehicle's first use month.

Your first use month is the month that you first use your heavy vehicle on public highways during the tax period. Then your 2290 is due the last day of the month following the first use month.

Because most people first use their heavy vehicles in July at the beginning of the period their deadline is August 31st. However, if you don’t use your vehicle until October then your deadline will be on November 30.

See, no big deal, the deadline is easy! Just remember it’s due the last day of the month following your first used month. Now let’s see what other HVUT 2290 topics we can tackle.

Instantly get your Form 2290 Stamped Schedule 1 With ExpressTruckTax

What Is A Taxable Heavy Vehicle?

You have to file Form 2290 for all of your taxable heavy vehicles, which are highway motor vehicles with a taxable gross weight of 55,000 pounds or more. A highway motor vehicle is any vehicle that is self-propelled and designed to carry a load over public highways, regardless if they are also designed to perform other functions.

Examples of these vehicles include trucks, truck tractors, and buses. Usually, vans, pickup trucks, and panel trucks are not subject to the HVUT because they weight less than 55,000 pounds.

What Are The HVUT Penalties?

If you fail to file Form 2290 by the deadline you will have penalties to face. The penalty for filing late is 4.5% of the total tax you owe and this amount will accrue on a monthly basis for up to five months.

Also, if you fail to make a payment by the deadline you will face an additional penalty of .5% of the total amount due. Plus, you will face an additional interest charge of .54% on a monthly basis as well.

How Do I File HVUT Form 2290?

Well, that’s super easy. Head to ExpressTruckTax.com to create your free account then follow the step-by-step e-filing guide to complete your form in a matter of minutes. The instructions tell you what information is needed and where so you can transmit your form directly to the IRS in no time!

How To File Form 2290 Amendments

0
Form 2290 Amendments made easy with ExpressTruckTax
You filed your Heavy Vehicle Use Tax (HVUT) Form 2290 this season right? Well, we hope so, because if you didn't the penalties could be building up pretty quickly. Anyways, if you did file, congratulations! You can do your happy dance until it’s time to file again next year, unless you need to update your form.

Even if you filed your 2290, you might not be finished with it, because if you need to file an amendment then you will need to go back update your form. Making an amendment isn’t something to fear or stress over with the help of ExpressTruckTax, which will help you quickly amend your Form 2290 so you can get back to the road.

Filing HVUT Form 2290 Amendments

Before we cover the how-to we will cover the amendment types. There are three different types of amendments that you can file with ExpressTruckTax.

1. VIN Corrections

Entering your VIN incorrectly is actually the number one mistake made on Form 2290s. Since VIN or Vehicle Identification Numbers consist of 17 alphanumeric characters they can be a little easy to mix up. However, no sweat if you make a mistake because ExpressTruckTax offers free VIN corrections.

You can only make a VIN correction for taxable or suspended vehicles. You can’t file a VIN correction for credit vehicles or suspended vehicles for previous years. Also, to make a VIN correction you have to have already filed and paid for your original Form 2290. Otherwise, the IRS will penalize you.

2. Suspended Vehicles Exceeding The Mileage Limit

For your heavy vehicle to be considered suspended it needs to travel less than the mileage use limit, which is 5,000 miles (7,500 for agricultural vehicles) during the entire HVUT period. If your vehicle travels more than that amount regardless of the number of drivers, then it’s no longer considered to be a suspended vehicle and you will need to update your form 2290.

You will use page 2 of your form to calculate the amount of tax you owe for this vehicle based on it’s first used month during the period. However, don’t worry, ExpressTruckTax will automatically and accurately calculate that amount for you. Also, you will need to file this amendment by the last day of the month following the month that your vehicle exceeded the mileage limit.

3. An Increase in Taxable Gross Weight

If the taxable gross weight of your vehicle increases during the tax period and it falls into a higher category then you will have to file a Form 2290 amendment for it. For example, when an increase in the maximum load that you usually carry occurs, then your taxable gross weight increases.

You will need to calculate the tax based on the additional weight on line 3 of your form, but ExpressTruckTax makes it easy by automatically calculating the amount for you. Also, you need to file by the last day of the month following the month that your taxable gross weight increases.

How To File An Amendment

Trucking Business Owners, Have You Filed Form 941?

0
E-filing Form 941 With ExpressTaxFilings is easy
You just paid your Heavy Vehicle Use (HVUT) 2290 tax with the help of ExpressTruckTax, so you can finally relax, right? Filing was super easy! However, more deadlines are waiting just around the corner.

It’s like taxes seem to never end, especially if you’re a small business owner because you have another tax deadline on the horizon! The 3rd quarter Form 941 deadline is on October 31st!

Wait, what is Form 941?

Form 941 is the Quarterly Federal Tax Return and it’s basically a report that’s used to disclose employment taxes for those who own and operate a business with employees. This means that anyone or any business, like a trucking business owner for example, that pays wages to an employee must file Form 941 on a quarterly basis. That’s right, four times a year, just like IFTA.

As an employer, you are responsible for withholding Medicare tax, social security tax, and federal income tax from your employee’s paychecks. You’re also responsible for sending these taxes to the IRS. Form 941 is used to report the amount of taxes you withhold from your employee’s paychecks for the quarter and to pay the employer’s portion of Medicare and social security taxes to the IRS.

How to E-file Form 941

Luckily for you, we have an IRS-authorized sister, ExpressTaxFilings, which will help you file Form 941 online in a matter of minutes.

Quickly File Form 941 Online With ExpressTaxFilings
It’s simple, create your free ExpressTaxFilings account and follow the guided interview style filing process to instantly complete your Form 941 online. ExpressTaxFilings tells you what information is required and exactly where it needs to go so you can finish your  941 form and transmit it directly to the IRS in no time!

Plus, we're here to help. If you need any assistance please contact the dedicated, US-based ExpressTruckTax support team. Give us a call Monday - Friday from 9 AM to 6 PM at 704.234.6005. We also offer live chat and you can take advantage of our 24/7 email support at support@expresstrucktax.com.

Your HVUT Form 2290 Was Due Last Month

0
E-file Form 2290 With ExpressTruckTax
Happy fall! We hope you have been enjoying the cooler temperatures and maybe you’ve had the chance to catch a football game or two. Fall is a great time to relax before the holiday rush begins. You can really take a load off by knowing that you’re already handled you Heavy Vehicle Use Tax (HVUT) back in August around the 31st when From 2290 was due.

Unless...you missed the deadline?! That means your form is almost a month late. However, you don’t need to panic because the ExpressTruckTax team is here to help! We will answer your questions and explain exactly what you need to do.

My HVUT Is Late, What Do I Do?

You are probably wondering if there are any penalties for filing late, so we will get those out of the way first. The penalty for filing HVUT Form 2290 late is equal to 4.5% of the total tax due assessed on a monthly basis for up to five months. If you also make a late HVUT payment you will also face a monthly penalty of .5% of the total tax due and additional interest charges of .54% will accrue per month as well.

Those are some hefty fees, so it’s best to go ahead and file as soon as possible to avoid having them grow larger. However, if you can provide reasonable cause for filing late you may not face penalties. Simply attach your reasonable cause with your Form 2290 when you file and the IRS may accept or reject it.

The HVUT period started in July 2017 and will end in June 2018. The due date is based on your first used month for your heavy vehicles. You have until the last day of the month following the month you first use your heavy vehicle on public highways to file.

So, because most truckers first used their trucks in July at the beginning of the period, they have until August 31st to file, making it a major HVUT deadline day. However, if first use your truck later in the year, then you have a later deadline. For example, if you first use your truck in November then you have until December 31 to file.

As mentioned above, if you have missed your deadline then it’s best to go ahead and file as soon as possible. Also, if your deadline coming up why not go ahead and knock it out with ExpressTruckTax?

How To File HVUT Form 2290

The e-filing process is quick and easy and can be completed online in a matter of minutes. All you have to do is follow the step by step e-filing guide, and you’ll begin by creating your free ExpressTruckTax account with your email address and personal password.

File Form 2290 With The ExpressTruckTax Mobile App
Then you will enter your business information such as the name, address, and EIN or Employer Identification Number. Next, you will enter your tax year and first used month before entering your vehicle information including the VIN or Vehicle Identification Number and the taxable gross weight.

After that, we will calculate the amount of HVUT you owe the IRS for you and you can pay that amount via direct debit or electronic funds withdrawal, EFTPS, check or money order.

Then we will perform a basic error check on your form to catch any simple mistakes. Double check your information to make sure it’s correct, and when you’re ready to pay for your form and transmit it directly to the IRS.

Then within 15 minutes of e-filing, you will receive a copy of your stamped Schedule 1 via email!!

Best of all, you don’t need a computer to file. Simply download the ExpressTruckTax App to your smartphone or tablet to file at any time, from any location. This makes it incredibly easy to file while you’re out on a trip because you can handle all of your HVUT form 2290 needs from the comfort of your own cab.

Actually, you may need to get moving a little, because today, August 31, is your last day to file without facing major penalties.

So, take a deep breath, relax, and head to ExpressTruckTax to knock out your Form 2290 in a matter of minutes. The process is quick and easy, so you don’t need to panic or feel the need to rush. Go ahead and file right now so you can get back to focusing on the road.

The HVUT Form 2290 Deadline Is Here

You need to file your Form 2290 today or you could be subject to major penalties. For example, the penalty for failing to file by the deadline is 4.5% of the total tax due, assessed on a monthly basis for up to five months. If you file late and fail to make a HVUT payment by the deadline you’ll also face a monthly fee of .5% of the total tax you owe. Plus, an additional interest charge of .54% will also accrue.

If you think that amount doesn’t seem like much, think again! If you originally owed the IRS $550 then that amount would climb to $700 by the end of the five-month delinquency period. Plus, some states suspend vehicle registrations until proof of your HVUT payment can be provided.

That’s why it’s super important to file by the deadline. By filing with ExpressTruckTax you will get a copy of your stamped Schedule 1 via email within 15 minutes of filing. You can also choose to have it faxed or mailed to you.

Your stamped Schedule 1 serves as your proof of HVUT payment, so you really need it. Plus, it’s required by the DMV to register new heavy vehicles and to renew your tags. Without it, you won’t be legally operating your truck!

Enough chit chat, you know you have to file, so here’s how you do it. Head to ExpressTruckTax.com and follow their step-by-step guide in order to instantly complete your form. The instructions will tell you what information needs to go where.

If you’re out on the road, you don’t need to find a computer or an IRS office to file. Simply download the ExpressTruckTax mobile app on your smartphone or tablet. This way you can file from any location from the comfort of your own cab.

Don’t forget about the easiest way to file with TSNAmerica. All you have to do is call them at 803.386.0320 and one of their US-based representatives will file for you, over the phone. With 1 fast call, you’ll complete your Form 2290 and then receive a copy of your stamped Schedule 1 via email.

Form 2290: Adding Suspended Vehicles

0
Form 2290: Adding Suspended Vehicles
Form 2290: Adding Suspended Vehicles
Since we’ve been talking to you about Form 2290 Amendments, we decided to switch gears and talk a bit about suspended vehicles and IRS Form 2290.

If you didn’t realize it on our last post about VIN corrections, we’re big on making the process easier.

Understanding Suspended Vehicles

In order to file a regular-usage vehicle as suspended, its mileage use on public highways must be 5,000 miles or less; and for an agricultural suspended vehicle, the mileage use must be 7,500 miles or less.

Regardless of the number of owners, the mileage use limit refers to the total mileage a vehicle is used during the taxable period.

Like we said, agricultural vehicles have different rules. An agricultural vehicle is any motor vehicle that is used for farming purposes primarily, and registered as a highway motor vehicle by state law, and is used for farming purposes for the entire period. A farming vehicle has a special tag or license plate that identifies its agricultural status.

While you have to claim a suspended vehicle like you would any tax filing, it’s still a different process.

So what are the steps? They are as follows:

  • Just like in your standard filing, you select your First Used Month & Year right away.
  • After that, if you were filing your typical 2290, you would enter or import your Taxable Vehicles. If you are still filing your 2290, go ahead and do this.
  • At the next step, you simply add your Suspended Vehicles like you did with your taxable vehicles.
  • On the next few steps, you’re able to view your information and edit it if necessary.

Finish everything up like you would with your normal HVUT 2290 filing!

While it’s tempting to just skip the taxes that confuse you, it’s important to make sure you file your Form 2290 in all of it's glory. If you have any questions about e-filing a suspended vehicle, reach our customer support experts at 704.234.6005.

At step 3, you enter your tax year and first used month for the vehicle(s) you are filing for.

The tax year you’ll be filing for (for this deadline) will be 2016-2017!

Step 4: Enter Your Vehicle Information

After that, you need to enter your vehicle identification number (VIN) and the taxable gross weight of the vehicle(s) you are filing for.

If you need to, you can select if your vehicle is used for any special purposes, such as for agricultural use or logging.

Note: Logging doesn’t mean you use e-logs or any other type of mileage logging system.

Step 5: IRS Payment Options

There are several payment options for you to select when you e-file IRS HVUT Form 2290. We suggest that you make sure you’re familiar with the IRS payment options available, including:

  • Direct Debit or Electronic Funds Withdrawal
  • Electronic Federal Tax Payment System (EFTPS)
  • Check or Money Order

Step 6: Summary and Audit Check

Before we transmit your 2290, we’ll check over your form to make sure it’s clear of any basic filing errors.

We can’t guarantee that you won’t be audited, but we can do our best to make sure nothing looks funky before we transmit!

Step 7: Transmit Your Return to the IRS

At this point, your return is ready to be transmitted to the IRS. Simply add your electronic signature and voila! We can transmit, and you’re done with Form 2290 Heavy Highway Vehicle Use Tax Return for the year!

Step 8: Receive Your Stamped Schedule 1

Want to know the best part? Shortly after you file, you’ll get your 2290 Schedule 1. That’s not bad!

Note: You can e-file 2290 directly from the ExpressTruckTax App?

As always, the team here at ExpressTruckTax will be here to help and support you through the e-filing process. Give us a call at 704.234.6005 if you have any questions!

3 Reasons Why Your IRS Form 2290 Was Rejected

0
3 Reasons Why Your IRS Form 2290 Was Rejected
3 Reasons why your IRS Form 2290 was Rejected
Thousands of truckers across the country are getting ready to e-file their Heavy Vehicle Use Tax return Form 2290, hoping to just press transmit and be done with it all.

But what happens when you e-file truck tax Form 2290 only to find out it was later REJECTED by the IRS? The last thing you want to find out is about a rejected 2290 on the truck tax due date!

Thankfully, when you e-file with ExpressTruckTax, you get unlimited re-filing for rejected returns.

Today, we’re going to examine why your 2290 may be rejected.

Rejected Because of EIN

Sometimes, filers will find that their Employer Identification Number is the source of their rejection.

This can sometimes happen if the EIN that you entered doesn’t match the EIN the IRS has on record.

If that’s the case, you need to contact the IRS directly to find out what information they have in their system.

If you have a brand new EIN, it will take on average about 10 business days for the EIN to register in the IRS system for you to e-file.

If you try to e-file your 2290 the same day that you receive your EIN, it will be rejected and the reason will be the "EIN does not match business name".

After your new EIN is registered in the IRS system, you can simply re-transmit your 2290 return (for free) and it should be accepted as long as there aren’t any more errors.

Rejected Because of Duplicate Filing

Your 2290 can only be accepted by the IRS one time. If you receive this particular rejection, it means your 2290 has already been filed and confirmed by the IRS.

The good part about this rejection, is that it requires no fix because your return has already been filed!

Rejected for Routing Issues

If you face a Routing Transit Number Rejection, it has to do with your payment. If you paid using the Electronic Funds Withdrawal (EFW) option, a bank routing number is required.

If the wrong information was entered for your routing number, your 2290 will be rejected. You can correct the routing and re-transmit to the IRS and should receive confirmation of acceptance in only a few minutes.

Note: If you entered the incorrect routing number or bank account number and the return is accepted, it is up to you to contact the IRS to resolve the issue. For best practices, always double check your numbers before transmitting your return to the IRS.

Hopefully, you’ll have a good experience e-filing Heavy Vehicle Use Tax Form 2290. The deadline is fast approaching, so be ready!

Note: The deadline to e-file Form 2290 online for 2016-2017 is August 31.

If you have any questions about rejected returns, you can reach our customer support experts at 704.234.6005.

Due Date to File Form 2290 is August 31
With the Heavy Vehicle Use Tax Form 2290 deadline approaching, we decided to break down some of the Form 2290 basics.

First of all, let’s reiterate the 2290 truck tax due date.

The Deadline for Form 2290

The IRS HVUT Form 2290 due date (or) deadline for the 2016-2017 tax year is August 31st, 2016.

When you need to file form 2290 online for 2016-2017, you also need to know your First Used Month.

The First Used Month of Vehicle

The First Used Month is the first month that the vehicle is used in a tax year.

If you have a new vehicle, the first used month is the first month that the vehicle is used in a year.

You need to file your HVUT Form 2290 a month after the first used month. If you bought the truck in February and started using it then, you would need to file your HVUT by the end of March.

Taxation Year

In order to understand how to file your Heavy Vehicle Use Tax return Form 2290, you need to comprehend how the HVUT tax year works.

If you have owned your truck for multiple years, July counts as your first used month for subsequent years after the first purchased year.

So when you go to e-file truck tax Form 2290, knowing the little details of your tax filing will make all the difference.

Save Time & Bulk Upload Multiple 2290 Forms

Save Time & Bulk Upload Multiple 2290 Forms
Save Time & Bulk Upload Multiple 2290 Forms
One of the best things about the trucking industry is how diverse it is.

One trucker might be an owner-operator, the other might be a company man for a large fleet. Either way, they’re going to have to file Form 2290. Taxable vehicles include any highway motor vehicles that have a taxable gross weight of 55,000 pounds or more.

So that probably covers your entire fleet. But how can you file HVUT for all of your vehicles? The answer is simple: bulk uploading and ExpressTruckTax's TruckZone feature.

Why Should I Bulk Upload?

First of all, it’s easy. Instead of entering each record one-by-one, you fill out a spreadsheet and our program does the rest.

Here’s what you do:

  • Login to our system, download the official spreadsheet.
  • Go field by field and enter the appropriate information in the right format.
  • After the form is complete, head back to ExpressTruckTax and upload the file.
  • Our software will check for errors and make sure each field is correct.
  • Note, if you already have your own spreadsheet use our smart upload. We will make sure fields match on our end, so that you don’t waste time making a new spreadsheet.
  • Make sure everything looks right.
  • Pay and transmit!

Finally, once you get your fleet’s vehicles uploaded, your trucks will be saved year to year thanks to our TruckZone.

What Is TruckZone?

When you need to e-file Form 2290 for multiple vehicles, TruckZone is a lifesafer. Working as virtual fleet, TruckZone keeps all of your vehicles on record so you can access them at any time.

Let’s say you need to file HVUT for 10 trucks. This feature lets you create your own truck tax zone where you can select the 10 trucks which need an HUT filing. In a few minutes, you can e-file form 2290 for all 10, and receive 10 stamped Schedule 1’s in just minutes.
