Are You Caught Up With Your Truck Taxes?

0
Truck driving during the fall, when taxes like 3rd quarter IFTA and IRS 941 are due.
Being a trucker isn’t easy. It seems like everyone on the road thinks you’re in their way, and yet the demand for delivered goods just keeps increasing.

On top of that, you have some serious bookkeeping to maintain.

Luckily for you, there are online software solutions like ExpressTruckTax to help take the paperwork off your plate.

Here are some yearly and quarterly truck taxes you need to be aware of in order to avoid penalties and interest.

Watch out for these truck taxes:

IFTA Fuel Tax

The IFTA fuel tax is a quarterly tax used to collect and distribute fuel tax revenue between jurisdictions.

IFTA simplifies truck taxes by allowing you to travel in all participating member jurisdictions with a single fuel tax license.

You’ll need to file report your IFTA tax to your base jurisdiction 4 times a year.

Here are the IFTA fuel tax deadlines you need to be aware of

Notice that the 3rd quarter IFTA deadline is approaching soon on Halloween!

Use ExpressIFTA, an online IFTA reporting software, to track all of your fuel records and generate your quarterly IFTA fuel tax reports online.

IRS Form 2290

Form 2290 is due annually, so you only need to worry about it once a year.

It’s coupled with the Heavy Use Vehicle Tax, which is the 2290 tax amount you must pay in addition to filing Form 2290.

Hopefully, this one doesn’t need to even be on your radar for months. It was due September 3, 2019. (Normally, Form 2290 is due August 31, but that date fell on a weekend).

If, however, your Form 2290 was rejected, or if you still have not filed IRS Form 2290 for 2019-20, you’ll need to do so right away. IRS penalties and interest for this tax are not forgiving, and they only increase with time.

Online filing takes less than 10 minutes, so there’s really no reason to endure hefty penalties.

Trucking down the highway, up to date on truck taxs like IFTA fuel tax and Form 941.

If you put off filing your 2290 tax form due to your inability to afford the 2290 tax, it’s important to note that the penalty for filing your Form 2290 but failing to pay your 2290 tax is substantially lower than failing to file and pay.

In addition to avoiding penalties, it is necessary to file your 2290 tax form each year in order to receive your stamped Schedule 1, which is required for operation.

Use ExpressTruckTax, the industry’s leading IRS-authorized e-file provider, to file IRS Form 2290 in minutes from anywhere on your phone, tablet, or computer. Never even set foot in an IRS office during one of the busiest truck tax seasons.

941 Taxes

Form 941 is relevant if you own and operate a trucking business with employees, as it is used to report employment taxes and calculate the employer’s portion of Social Security and Medicare tax.

941 taxes are quarterly, meaning they’re due 4 times a year:

As you can see, the 3rd quarter 941 Form 2019 deadline is coming up. Make sure you know whether or not you need to file 941 taxes. Unsure if you need to file? Read more here.

If you do need to file IRS Form 941, you’ll want to check out TaxBandits. Forget the paperwork, simply file 941 taxes online in a few minutes. Plus their interview style e-filing process and automatic error checks ensure success.

Things You Need To Know: HVUT, Highway Tax 2290, and IFTA Tax

0
Truck tax deadlines are approaching and truckers must stay on top of HVUT, Form 2290, and IFTA tax filing.
With every deadline comes more confusion.

You might think, “What are all these forms and payments, and why am I constantly dealing with them?”

Understanding HVUT, highway tax 2290, and IFTA tax will prepare you to file quickly each year and keep you from making filing mistakes.

Knowing the differences will also give you an idea of if you need to file, and when to file.

HVUT

HVUT, or Heavy Vehicle Use Tax, is a tax on heavy vehicles used to fund highway maintenance.

You must pay Heavy Highway Use Tax if your truck has a gross weight of 55,000 pounds or more and is driven on public highways over 5,000 miles per year. Gross weight is weight when fully equipped for service.

Heavy Highway Use Tax is an annual tax. The HVUT deadline is the same as the 2290 highway use tax form deadline. HVUT is also known as HVUT 2290 because of its connection with Form 2290, which we’ll talk about next.

Highway Tax 2290

Highway Tax 2290, or simply Form 2290, is the form used to pay your HVUT amount.

Form 2290 is also used to calculate the Heavy Highway Use Tax amount you owe, determine your truck’s category, claim an exemption or credit, and more.

Highway Tax 2290 proves why the HVUT 2290 amount you’re paying is what you’re paying.

You need an EIN to file 2290 Highway Use Tax Form. The deadline is the same as the HVUT 2290 deadline. File Highway Tax 2290 Form and pay HVUT 2290 by the end of the month after your first use month.

IFTA Tax

The IFTA tax is not related to HVUT 2290 and Highway Tax 2290 Form. IFTA, or International Fuel Tax Agreement, ensures that each state/province is paid the correct IFTA fuel tax.

IFTA fuel tax becomes important when vehicles travel frequently across state borders. If trucks fill up in one state and immediately cross to the next, the state they’re driving in is losing out.

With IFTA reporting, truckers track miles in each state.

You need to pay IFTA fuel tax quarterly if your vehicle has 2 axles and a gross vehicle weight or registered gross weight > 26,000 pounds, has a combined weight of 26,000 pounds or has 3 or more axles regardless of weight.

Here are the deadlines:

Quarter Periods

This Is What Actually Happens If You Don't File IRS 2290

0
The IRS Form 2290 deadline is creeping up.

Don’t end up blindsided. Filing IRS 2290 for 2019 by the 2290 deadline is critical, not only to stay compliant, but also to remain in operation and avoid fines.

Still not convinced? Don’t wait around until the end of August to find out for yourself, we’ll tell you what will happen right now.

Here’s a rundown of what exactly what happens when you miss 2290 deadline:

What Happens If You Forget About IRS 2290?

IRS 2290 Deadline

Normally, the annual IRS 2290 deadline is August 31st, but this year that date falls on a Saturday.

Therefore, the 2290 due date is technically September 3rd.

We’re off to a good start. You’ve got a couple more days to file than normal.
But you’re busy. What if you still can’t find the time or motivation?

IRS 2290 Penalties

Here’s some motivation:

If you miss the 2290 deadline, you’ll face penalties. Let’s say you simply forget to file.

First, you’ll need to pay the IRS 2290 late filing penalty, which is 4.5% of the total HVUT 2290 tax amount you owe.

Then, you’ll face an additional .54% of interest each month that passes without you filing.

On top of that, you’ll still have to pay the original HVUT 2290 amount you owe whenever you do file.

If the reason for late filing was an error on your original IRS 2290 return, you may be able to avoid penalties altogether.

You can attach an explanation to your corrected 2290 for 2019 filing, showing reasonable cause for the delay. Even this, however, does not guarantee that the IRS will accept your statement and save you from the penalty.

Avoiding Form 2290 Penalties

There’s an easy fix for avoiding IRS Form 2290 penalties:

File HVUT 2290 before the 2290 due date!

The Form 2290 deadline is usually August 31, but since that falls on a weekend this year, it is September 3rd.

You really have no excuse not to file on time. Especially with ExpressTruckTax as an option.

ExpressTruckTax allows you to file IRS 2290 for 2019 online quickly and easily.

Plus, you’ll get your Schedule 1 just minutes after you’ve submitted your return.

It doesn’t take long, and you can file from anywhere. Knock it out today and forget about the 2290 due date until next year.

50 Years of Dave Nemo: The Best In Trucking Radio

0
Dave Nemo, trucking radio show host, and trucking industry legend is celebrating 50 years in trucking radio.

We decided to recognize this huge feat by sitting down with the man himself to talk about becoming an industry leader and to pass along the invaluable knowledge he has to offer.

Watch the full interview here:

50 Years of Dave Nemo: The Best In Trucking Radio

The Beginnings of Trucking Radio

Like everyone in the trucking industry, Dave Nemo has a story.

His starts at just 2 years old, listening to “The National Barn Radio Show” with his family every Saturday night.

Glued to the soundtrack, the show drew him to music, and radio soon followed. In the ’70s, Dave says, “Radio was a vehicle for music to be heard”.

In college, he was the campus radio station’s music director. Then, trucking worked its way into the equation unexpectedly.

After serving in the Vietnam War, he returned to the radio station where he worked after college, and discovered a need.

Truck drivers were multiplying, and yet, nothing was catered to them. The trucking industry was so unknown that insight for truckers on the road was non-existent. Instead, trucking radio was simply an attempt to keep truckers awake and alive.

Dave Nemo decided to expand on that.

Understanding the Trucking Industry

Beginning in a virtually untapped industry was a learning experience for Dave Nemo.

Gradually, he began to understand the population he was serving.

He recalls having an unexpected connection with drivers because so many were just getting back from war or on their way out.

Dave says, “It’s been an incredible experience getting to meet a population of the country that not a lot of people know about, and yet truck drivers and their families are everywhere. I think 1 out of 6 people in the country is involved in transportation.”

Those who work in the trucking industry form a community. There are no stereotypical truck drivers, but there is a trucking lifestyle. Those who drive are part of a unique family, moving our country forward with great pride and a sense of commitment.

As Dave says, “Trucking is an uncelebrated section of our population - I always compare teachers and truckers… the vital nature of what they do and the little recognition they get for it.”

Advice To Those in The Trucking Industry

50 years in trucking radio is a long time, and Dave Nemo has invaluable wisdom from it.

His advice for people moving forward in the industry or just starting out is to talk to as many people as possible. There are more options in the trucking industry today than ever before. Take time to find your niche.

For more trucking tips, listen to Dave Nemo’s show every morning, 7-11 AM EST on Sirius XM and Road Dog Trucking Radio.

Remember, in both radio and taxes, you have allies in the trucking industry.

The Most Common IRS Form 2290 Mistakes to Avoid

0
There’s nothing worse than having to file your annual truck taxes twice. 😐

Avoid IRS Form 2290 mistakes this season when you e-file 2290 with ExpressTruckTax.

We’ve got a few tips to make the process as painless as possible and save you from any unnecessary corrections.

Filing IRS Form 2290 before the deadline will save you tons of money, but mistakes could keep you from meeting the Form 2290 for 2019 due date and cost you a sweet penny.

Avoid frustration and confusion by double-checking some information that commonly delays IRS Form 2290 approval.

The Most Common IRS Form 2290 Mistakes to Avoid

5 Common IRS Form 2290 Mistakes

Here are some things to be extra cautious about when filing your 2290 Form.

How to Check These Areas For Error

  • 1) EIN (Employer Identification Number) or VIN (Vehicle Identification Number)

A unique EIN is assigned to each company operating in the US as a form of identification for tax purposes. Your EIN should be a string of 9 numbers, presented in this format: 12-3456789.

Since this number looks similar to a social security number, filers often confuse the two, causing the IRS to reject the 2290 Tax Form.

Keep in mind that it takes 10 business days for the IRS to update its database with a new EIN. If you’re applying for a new EIN, do so at least a month before you e-file IRS 2290 to avoid delays.

Your VIN should be 17 characters long and include both numbers and letters. Check your VIN before submitting your 2290 Tax Form. If incorrect, your IRS Form 2290 will be rejected.

The best online tax filing is quick. Don’t waste unnecessary time with mistakes. When you e-file 2290, double-check your Form 2290 for 2019 and ensure that your EIN and VIN are correct.

  • 2) First Used Month or Filing Year

When filing IRS Form 2290, make sure you use the correct filing year.

Note: If you’ve used an online filing service before, the drop-down menu could be set to a previous 2290 Tax Form file year. Double-check!

Secondly, choose an accurate first used month.

The first used month is the month you first used the truck on the highway during the tax period, which runs from July 1 to June 30 of the next year. Your Truck Tax form is due on the last day of the month after your first used month.

This means if you first used your vehicle in July, as most drivers do during the tax season, then you will need to file your IRS 2290 Tax Form by August 31.

  • 3) Gross Taxable Weight

IRS Form 2290 tax calculations can be tricky, but don’t sweat it. At ExpressTruckTax, our system automatically calculates your owed tax amount. Leave all 2290 tax form math to us.

It’s important to find the best online tax filing service to save yourself time and money. ExpressTruckTax can help!

  • 4) Authorized Signatory Details

It's super easy to sign your IRS 2290 online. All you need is a 5-digit authorized signature code. Still, no matter how simple it sounds, please just… double-check. 😬

  • 5) Business Name & Address

You'd be surprised at how many returns are rejected for this information being incorrect!

The wrong business name and address is the most common error on the heavy vehicle use tax form 2290. Don’t let it happen to you!

Double-check your business name and address before submitting your IRS Form 2290.

Why is it so Important to Avoid IRS 2290 Mistakes?

Even the simplest mistake on your IRS Form 2290 can cause serious problems. For starters, your 2290 Tax Form will definitely be rejected by the IRS.

This is a huge time waster and may cause you to miss the HVUT 2290 Tax Form Deadline.

If this happens and you miss the deadline, you’ll need to correct your Form 2290 and file again, attaching an explanation to show reasonable cause for the delay of your heavy vehicle use tax.

There’s no guaranteeing that your statement will be accepted by the IRS, and if it’s not, you’ll face heavy IRS 2290 Tax Form penalties.

The penalty for failing to file IRS Form 2290 by August 31st is 4.5% of the total tax amount owed. Plus, you still have to pay the base HVUT 2290 amount you owe.
In addition, this penalty will increase monthly for up to 5 months, with an additional .54% interest added for each month that it remains unpaid.

Save yourself while you can and double-check your Form 2290 before you e-file 2290 online.

How To Prepare For Summer As A Trucker

0
Those who have already chosen ExpressTruckTax to file their Form 2290 2019 are finding themselves with a lot of time on their hands for summer 2019. ExpressTruckTax saves truckers money and time with a solution ranked higher than all others in the trucking industry.

Filing your Form 2290 for 2019 is a big task, but it doesn't have to be. ExpressTruckTax is adamant about giving clients the best possible experience. This is why it is called the leading Form 2290 solution and for the 2019-20 season, it's no different. The process for filing your Form 2290 2019 has gotten quicker compared to past years.

In the trucking industry more time on your hands can mean more time with family or more time on the road. If you choose to spend that extra time on the road there are a few things you should be concerned about.

Check The Fuel For Your Body

Heat exhaustion can go hand in hand with dehydration. There are two forms of heat exhaustion that can take place when the temperature begins to rise, water depletion and salt depletion. Water depletion symptoms can be weakness and headaches.

Watch out for any of the signs that relate to heat exhaustion and be aware of changes in your body and functions.

Food High in Water Content

  • Cucumbers
  • Celery
  • Zucchini
  • Cauliflower
  • Watermelon
  • Strawberries
  • Yogurt
  • Spinach

Tips and Tricks

  • Remove tight-fitting clothing
  • Take a cool shower
  • Get out of the sun

Check The Fuel For Your Vehicle

The engine cooling system is important, especially in sweltering temperatures. Your body can be affected by heat exhaustion, what makes you think your rig can't?! Before beginning your trip make sure your system has both enough antifreeze and water.

Checking on the coolant of your vehicle is important in making sure your vehicle isn’t overheating. Coolant that is too hot can lead to engine failure and even a fire.

Slow It Down And Take A Break

Your vehicle is more vulnerable to overheating when you are traveling at high speeds. There is extra stress on both the tires and the engine being applied.
  • Drive slow and remember to take frequent breaks to let the system cool down.
  • Tire blowouts are more common in hot weather. Air pressure also increases with temperature. Allowing the tires to cool off every few hours or ideally every 100 miles reduce the risk of not only blowouts but fire as well.

Enjoy The Summer

Truckers can get pretty overwhelmed in the summer because of the time they're missing away from family on top of their workload increasing. One way truck drivers can enjoy their summer is by getting ahead on their Form 2290 2019. If you haven't already you can file now and have your Form 2290 2019 submitted to the IRS the very day they begin accepting Forms.

We hope these tips make your Sumer 2019 one to remember. Stay safe, stay hydrated and stay ready for anything.

0
The IRS Form 2290 for Heavy Vehicle Use Taxes (HVUT) must be filed annually by August 31st. This year, however, the HVUT due date is technically September 3rd.

Although there is a shift in the 2019 HVUT due date, this isn't a call for procrastination.

We know that technically 5 is greater than 0 and pressing snooze again is better than hearing a 5 o'clock wake up call. However, what if that 0 meant 0 penalties versus 5 and pressing snooze one more time could cost you your job?

There is a long list of benefits for filing your 2019 Form 2290 with ExpressTruckTax, but our favorite is that you could win free stuff. That's right we are having an ExpressTruckTax giveaway. This year any ExpressTruckTax client who files before June 30th can win a FREE BlueParrott Bluetooth Headset and a whole lot more. This ExpressTruckTax giveaway might be our favorite yet.

Other Ways To File

ExpressTruckTax's sister company, Truck Services of North America (TSNAmerica) is now offering phone filing. You can now get for 2019 Form 2290 filed over the phone in just minutes by their well-trained support staff.

Possible HVUT Penalties

We know that time gets away from us all and by setting aside a few minutes of your day you could dodge huge penalties with the click of a button.

The IRS may impose penalties for several different reasons regarding HVUT Form 2290. You may be penalized for failing to file your return or to pay taxes owed by the 2019 Form 2290 due date. HVUT penalties may also be applied for filing false or fraudulent returns. These penalties are in addition to interest accrued on late payments.

Get The Office Scoop From The Real Experts of Form 2290

0
Real ExpertsThe Real Experts of Form 2290 have no problem giving you the inside scoop of what takes place in the office. They also have no problem telling you about their REAL lives. Meet the team that is making sure you and thousands of others are getting top of the line support.

Scroll down to see what the Real EXperts are up to this season!

AMBER

Amber loves Disney. Some may even say she is a fanatic, but around the office we call it passion. That same passion Amber has when it comes to all things Disney is what she expresses when assisting our loyal customers, year after year. This is what makes Amber one of our EXpert vets.

ANDREW

When Andrew isn’t weirdly, spending time convincing new team members he can lick his own elbow,  he is convincing truckers to “just e-file it”. What makes Andrew an EXpert is his commitment to making e-filing your 2290 a lot easier than this unique, but yet oddly-impressive, party trick of his. 😝

ARIEL

At night, Ariel is a wizard costume designer, but her powers don’t stop there. She is our in-house oracle that foresees your future Google search and is the reason you are seeing our social media ads after telling your spouse you need to file your 2290…

Shhh.. She’s listening.

BRYAN

The 2290 renewal period is a beast, and “Trucker B.”, as he is notoriously known as, expects this year to be the best one yet! As a Form 2290 vet, “Trucker B.” is ready to conquer the beast without breaking a sweat. 😅
That is what we call, skill!

ELENA

Even though Elena is a blue belt in Tae Kwon Do and can break a wooden board on a fly, her true talent is remembering specifics about our clients. She is excited to chat with our longtime clients, who she refers to as a family.

HANNAH

Hannah’s colorful vocabulary isn’t the only way she chooses to EXpress herself. Her eclectic taste in music will have her reciting Biggie lyrics one moment and serenading to the likes of Fleetwood Mac the next. She is just as excited to experience the hype of the 2290 season as she was when she heard Fleetwood Mac’s “Dreams” for the first time.

LEAH

Since the age of 8, Leah has been dominating thousands of dirt tracks all by herself! 💪
This year Leah is throwing on a jersey, (well an ExpressTruckTax shirt), and joining a team of EXperts to tackle thousands of Form 2290’s!

MEREDITH

When Meredith isn’t enthusiastically keeping truckers up to date on how to save time and money, she is keeping her coffee cup full to the rim. What makes Meredith an EXpert is her commitment to helping truckers with tons on their plate.

MISSAEL

Missael is a Carolinian, by way of Mexico, and with true southern spirit is determined to show some of the vets why he deserves a spot amongst the elites. This may be his first season, but he is geared up for what lies ahead.

RYAN

Like any world traveler, Ryan knows it all and has seen it all, this goes for Form 2290 as well. Ryan is thrilled to partner with a team of like-minded individuals to handle what is thrown ExpressTruckTax’s way. The busiest and craziest time of the year is no big deal to our office globetrotter.

TAYLOR

Taylor is a self-taught DIY carpenter from the University of Pinterest. When she isn’t building her next masterpiece, she is building you the most convenient online experience. From floral backdrops to Form 2290 blog post, her hands can create them both.
