Have You Heard About the New IRS Form 2290 Payment Options?

0
Have You Heard About the New IRS Form 2290 Payment OptionsIt may be hard to believe, but it’s already time to start filing your 2018-19 2290! If you’re currently thinking, “Wait, 2290 season doesn’t start until July?” then you would be correct, partially. Since we’ve worked hand-in-hand with the IRS for more than ten years now, we are excited to offer IRS Form 2290 online filing for the 2018-19 tax year ahead of schedule. This is exclusive for ExpressTruckTax customers so you can get back to enjoying time with your family instead of worrying about filing your 2290 tax form.

IRS Payment Methods for Form 2290

When you file Form 2290 online with ExpressTruckTax, you’ll follow a step-by-step guide to complete your form in a matter of minutes. Once you get to the IRS payment step, you can choose between 4 different payment options based on the most convenient method for you. Yes, four! We’ve heard you and have added the option to pay your tax with a credit or debit card!

Credit or Debit Card

Starting in July 2018 the IRS will allow you to pay 2290 with a credit card or debit!

For more information on credit or debit card payments, go to IRS.gov/PayByCard.

Direct Debit or Electronic Funds Withdrawal (EFW)

Provide your banking information (account and routing number) through ExpressTruckTax’s safe and secure system to authorize the IRS to debit the amount you owe from your bank account. It is important that your account has enough funds to cover the amount you owe.

The amount is generally withdrawn in 24 to 48 hours after providing authorization. Keep in mind that this involves your banking information, not your credit/debit card number.

If you need to cancel your payment contact IRS payment services at 1.888.353.4537 at least 2 days before the payment date.

EFTPS (Electronic Federal Tax Payment System) is the electronic tax payment system used by the IRS. If you choose this payment option you will be taken to the EFTPS site, and you’ll create a free account. Please keep in mind that it can take up to 10 business days to establish this type of account.

To pay the IRS through EFTPS, you will provide your bank account information and verify that the IRS is allowed to withdraw your tax payment from that account. In order to make your payment by the deadline, you must schedule it before 8 p.m. the day before the deadline for it to be received by the IRS in time.

Check or Money Order

You can also pay the amount of HVUT you owe with a Check or Money Order. If you choose this option you will need to print your completed payment voucher, 2290-V, from page 11 of your completed 2290 Form and mail to the IRS by the August 31st deadline.

Make your check or money order payable to the United States Treasury. Also, you will need to include your name, address, EIN, the date, and the words “IRS Form 2290” with your payment.

Do not staple your payment and voucher together.
Have You Heard About the New IRS Form 2290 Payment Options?

Send your payment and voucher 2290-V to:
Internal Revenue Service
P.O. Box 804525,
Cincinnati, OH 45280-4525

Remember, never send cash through the mail.

Important: If you have already paid your HVUT via Direct Debit or EFW and received a letter from the IRS saying they were unable to debit the funds there are a few likely causes:

- Your account and routing number were entered into ExpressTruckTax incorrectly. Even entering one character incorrectly will prevent the IRS from being able to withdraw the amount you owe.
- The IRS tried to debit your account, but you had insufficient funds. If you are even as little as 50 cents short then the IRS will not debit the funds.

If you receive a letter from the IRS saying they could not withdraw the funds from the bank account provided then you will need to send a check or money order to the IRS in order to pay the amount you owe by the August 31st deadline.

3 Ways To Pay Your IRS Form 2290 HVUT

0
When e-filing your IRS Form 2290 with ExpressTruckTax.com, for the Heavy Vehicle Use Tax, you have 3 options for paying the tax. Before we get into the options, lets me start by saying you can not pay the IRS with a debit/credit card.

Here are the options the IRS does accept:

1. Electronic Funds Withdrawal (ETF) - The most popular option, you can choose to have the IRS payment taken directly from a bank account. You just enter in the routing number and bank account number. Just double check and make sure the numbers are correct before you transmit your return to the IRS. Hit that ctrl+ combination to zoom in, and go through those numbers carefully.  You will not be able to amend this error on your return after it has been accepted by the IRS.

2. Check/Money Order - This is great option if you are hesitant about using your bank routing and account number. The first option is more convenient, but some people still like doing things old school. If you choose this option, you will be emailed a payment voucher after you transmit your return to the IRS. Then all you will do is print out the payment voucher and mail it in with the check/money order. The voucher will have all the directions for what to put where. You want to have the check/money order in the mail as soon as possible, but no later than a week after transmitting the return. Make sure to hold on to the money order stub just in case you need to verify you sent the payment, always good to have some insurance.

3. Electronic Federal Tax Payment System (EFTPS) - An EFTPS account is a tax payment service provided by the US Dept of Treasury. You can enroll in this service for free and once you receive your credentials, you can pay any tax due to the IRS using this system. You will not choose this option if you do not have an EFTPS account set up beforehand. Visit EFTPS.gov for more info on setting up this type of account.

Each payment method is processed directly by the US Treasury. Regardless of the payment method you choose you still receive your Stamped Schedule 1 via email within minutes of your return being accepted by the IRS. This is because you have either paid or made an electronic promise to pay the taxes due. If your Stamped Schedule 1 is not showing up in your email, you can always log into your ExpressTruckTax.com account and access it on the Dashboard page.

If you have any questions about the options to pay the HVUT, give our US-based Express Truck Tax Support Team a call: 704.234.6005 or shoot us an email: support@expresstrucktax.com

Heavy Vehicle Use Tax (HVUT) Information

0
HVUT is the Heavy Vehicle Use Tax that is a fee assessed annually on heavy vehicles operating on public highways at registered gross weights equal to or exceeding 55,000 pounds. The gross taxable weight of a vehicle is determined by adding the unloaded weight of the motor vehicle and any trailers together with the maximum load customarily carried on-road by the truck-trailer combination.

You must file Form 2290 for the tax period beginning on July 1, 2012, and ending on June 30, 2013, if a taxable highway motor vehicle (defined below) is registered, or required to be registered, in your name under state, District of Columbia, Canadian, or Mexican law at the time of its first use during the period and the vehicle has a taxable gross weight of 55,000 pounds or more.

There are a few instances where a vehicle is exempt from paying the HVUT tax, even if most of those instances; a Form 2290 is required to be filed even if no tax is due. You can find detailed information on the IRS site at www.irs.gov/trucker.

You need: Business Details - Business Name (Sole proprietor can use their legal name) and address, EIN (Employer Identification Number), details of the authorized signatory.

Vehicle Details - Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) and Gross Weight of the Vehicle

Form of IRS payment- When E-Filing with ExpressTruckTax you have 3 options for paying any tax amounts due.  Electronic Funds Withdrawl (EFW) using your bank routing number and bank account number, Electronic Federal Tax Payment System (EFTPS) by visiting EFTPS.gov or by mailing in a check or money order. We suggest EFW.

Heavy Vehicle Use Taxes must be filed using the Form 2290 on an annual basis. The Tax period for Heavy Vehicles begins on July 1st and ends on June 30th.The Annual renewal of your Form 2290 for a new tax period IS DUE BY August 31st each year.  If your vehicle is placed in service anytime during the tax year, the Form 2290 must be filed by the last day of the following month. The tax will be prorated based on the number of months the vehicle will have been used during the tax year. If a vehicle was used during any part of a month, the tax will be calculated for that month as a whole.

For New Vehicles placed in service, the IRS Form 2290 must be filed by the last day of the month following the month of first use. For example, if you purchase and first use a vehicle in January, you must file a Form 2290 by the end of February.

You can still paper file, but the IRS requires anyone filing for 25 or more vehicles do so electronically and recommends that everyone do so.

Electronically: File Form 2290 electronically through any electronic return originator (ERO), transmitter, and/or intermediate service provider (ISP) participating in the IRS e-file program for excise taxes, such as ExpressTruckTax.com. For more information on e-file, visit the IRS website at www.irs.gov/Filing or visit www.irs.gov/Businesses.

Paper: Mail Form 2290 to the address shown under Where to File. If you did not pay the tax using the Electronic Funds Transfer or Electronic Federal Tax Payment System (EFTPS), mail Form 2290-V and your check or money order with Form 2290.

Or you can take your Form 2290 to the nearest IRS office.

Last Minute Tips for E-Filing Form 2290

0
ExpressTruckTax.com is the quickest, easiest, and best value for filing your Form 2290 (Heavy Truck Use Tax) online with the IRS. The August 31st due date for the tax is getting closer, and here are a few points to keep in mind while E-Filing.

  • E-file your 2290 returns with Expresstrucktax.com
  • Review Federal Tax ID# or EIN# [Employer Identification Number]
  • Review your Tax Year and Month
  • Review your VIN# [Vehicle Identification Number]
  • Sign and date your return electronically
  • Choose IRS payment option
  • Review all the information
  • Double check your Business Name
  • E-File Your 2290 Return

Choose an IRS payment option:
There are several options to pay the HVUT taxes with the IRS.
  • Electronic Funds Withdrawal, or Direct Debit: The IRS will collect the taxes due after they are provided with a bank account number and routing number
  • EFTPS: You have to schedule the payment to the IRS by going to EFTPS.gov.
  • Check/Money Order: The IRS also supports Check/Money Order as long as it is scheduled by the 31st.

We strongly advise our Canadian customers to use this option as EFW may not work for Canadian banks.

Just a reminder, if you choose Direct Debit (EFW) as a payment method, the IRS will not process your return during the weekends, or on federal holidays, but on the next business day.

Review Tax ID Numbers
Carefully check Tax Identification numbers on your return.

Review Your Return
Expresstrucktax.com is a very smart program, it automatically checks for any errors before you transmit your 2290 return to IRS, but it’s always good to double check everything before you hit the ‘Transmit to IRS’ button.
