Know Your 2290 Vehicle Types: Suspended, Agricultural, Logging, Etc.

0
With the Heavy Vehicle Use Tax Form 2290 deadline on August 31st quickly approaching we’re here to help with tips about the filing process, and where you can find some savings. We don’t want you to pay more than you have to. Plus, we want you to get the highest amount of credits that you can to claim a refund!

That’s why we’re discussing the different types of 2290 vehicles today. Some are subject to lower tax rates, will give you credits, and are even exempt from the HVUT all together!

2290 Vehicles

It’s important to be aware that all of your qualifying highway motor vehicles with a taxable gross weight of over 55,000 pounds or more must be reported on your Form 2290. The weight includes the vehicle’s chassis or the chassis and body, but not the load.

Qualifying vehicles include any self-propelled vehicles that are designed to carry loads on public highways, regardless if they’re designed to perform other functions or not. A few examples of other functions include being designed to carry special good or supplies, to carry passengers, or to carry permanently mounted equipment.

Logging Vehicle

This one is pretty simple. A logging vehicle is one that is exclusively used for the transportation of products like timber (logs) harvested from forested sites, or it exclusively transports products harvested from the site to and from locations within the forested site.

It’s important to list your vehicle as a logging one if it qualifies because logging vehicles are subject to lower tax rates than other heavy vehicles. Just keep in mind that your vehicle must be registered as a vehicle exclusively used for logging accordingly to the applicable vehicle registration laws in your state.

Agricultural Vehicles

Agricultural vehicles are any highway motor vehicles that are used or expected to be used primarily for farming purposes. They must be registered under state laws are a highway motor vehicle used for farming purposes during the entire tax period.

A qualifying agricultural vehicle is one that is used for farming purposes for over half of the vehicle's use, based on mileage, during the tax period. These vehicles also require special tags or license plates to identify them as agricultural vehicles and are considered to be different from logging vehicles.

Agricultural vehicles count as suspended or credit vehicles if they’re used for fewer than 7,500 miles during the tax period.

Suspended Vehicles

A suspended or credit vehicle is a highway motor vehicle that is expected to travel less than 5,000 miles or less (7,500 miles or less for agricultural vehicles) during the tax period. This mileage limit applies to the total amount of miles it’s driven on the road, regardless of the number of owners.

Other suspended or credit vehicles include those that were sold, destroyed, or stolen and they must all be reported on your 2290. If they exceed the mileage limit during the tax period then you’ll owe HVUT for them.

While e-filing Form 2290 if ExpressTruckTax sees that your credit amount exceeds the amount of HVUT you owe then we will auto generate Form 8849 for you, so you can claim a refund or credit on the amount you paid to the IRS for these vehicles.

Exempt Vehicles

Vehicles that are exempt from the HVUT don’t need to be filed for, regardless of how many miles they travel. They’re 100% exempt from the Heavy Vehicle Use Tax! A few HVUT exempt vehicles include qualified blood collector vehicles, mobile machinery used for non-transportation purposes, heavy vehicles used by the federal government, and more.

Now that you know where you can save based on what type of vehicles you have head to ExpressTruckTax.com to quickly e-file your Form 2290 and get your stamped Schedule 1 via email instantly. You can also call TSNAmerica at 803.386.0320 to have a representative file for you over the phone.

Save Money On Your Form 2290

0
You know what's a good practice in the trucking industry? Penny-pinching! Saving anywhere you can really help out in the long run, and can actually make or break fleets trying to emerge into the market. Unfortunately, with the Heavy Vehicle Use Tax (HVUT) Form 2290 deadline you’ll have to pay the amount you owe or face hefty penalties. But don't worry, we know a few ways to save on your HVUT.

Use These Tips To Save On Your 2290:

1. Take Advantage of Our Wallet Feature

Before filing your HVUT Form 2290 see how many forms you actually need to file because with ExpressTruckTax you can purchase prepaid credits through their exclusive wallet feature. Each credit provides a 10% discount off of your filing fee, so the more credits you buy, the more you save. Don’t worry about purchasing more credits than you need, because they never expire and can be used next season.

The credits save you time and money because instead of having to hunt down your wallet and enter in all of your card information, you can conveniently use your prepaid credit to pay for your form.

To purchase prepaid credits log into your free ExpressTruckTax account and you’ll see your wallet in the top right corner. Click the orange ‘Buy’ button to purchase the number of credits you need.

2. Get A Refund Or Credit With Form 8849

After you file Form 2290 and pay the amount of HVUT that you owe you can file Form 8849, the Refund or Claim of Excise taxes form, which is used to claim refunds or credits on suspended vehicles and vehicles that were sold, stolen, or destroyed.

Suspended or credit vehicles are vehicles that don’t exceed 5,000 miles (7,500 miles for agricultural vehicles) during the current tax period.

While filing your Form 2290 with ExpressTruckTax if your credit vehicles exceed the amount of HVUT you owe then Form 8849 will automatically be generated for you, and all you need to file is your name, address, and EIN. You’ll also need the information for your vehicle that you’re claiming a refund on, including details as to why, if your vehicle was lost, stolen, or destroyed, and the date that the incident occurred.

3. Avoid Penalties By Filing on Time

If you file late you could face a penalty of 4.5% of the tax due. To make matters worse that amount collects on a monthly basis for up to 5 months! Also, if you don’t pay the amount you owe then you’ll face another penalty of 0.5% of the amount owed per month. You’ll really save by filing on on time.

If you wait until just days before the deadline you could run into a problem that causes your form to be rejected and then counted as late if you can’t fix it by the deadline. For example, if you enter the wrong VIN or Vehicle Identification Number, or wait too late to apply for an EIN or Employer Identification Number your form could get rejected.

Luckily ExpressTruckTax makes it easy to fix any mistakes. If your form is rejected you’ll be notified almost immediately with notes as to why. Then you can easily make Form 2290 amendments, retransmit your forms to the IRS, and make free VIN corrections at any time. The sooner your pre-file, the sooner you’ll learn if your form has been rejected or accepted.

How To Pre-file?

You can create your free ExpressTruckTax account to access our step-by-step 2290 e-filing guide to complete your form in a matter of minutes today. Then as soon as the IRS stamps your Schedule 1 you’ll receive a copy via email. You don't even need a computer to file, download the free ExpressTruckTax App to file on your smartphone or tablet from any location.

Also, you can call TSNAmerica at 803.386.0320 to speak with a representative who will pre-file your 2290 for you, over the phone. How does it get any easier than that? Plus, you’ll get a copy of your stamped Schedule 1 via email.

2290s And EINs: Everything You Need To Know

0
The Heavy Vehicle Use Tax season is coming right at us at full speed! You can try to jump out of the way, but you’ll still need to file your Form 2290 by the August 31st deadline. Don’t let the deadline run you over. Be prepared and file as soon as possible to avoid having your form rejected. For example, it’s very important to know that you’re required to have an EIN.

What to Remember About Your EIN?

Your EIN or your Employer Identification Number is also known as the Federal Tax Identification Number and the Federal Employer Identification Number or FEIN. EINs are assigned to businesses operating in the United States in order to identify them for tax reporting purposes. Each EIN consists of a unique 9 digit number.

This is important because you are required by the IRS to have an EIN to complete your 2290. They need it to identify you to correctly verify that you’re filing for yourself and to prevent fraud.

There may be some confusion when it comes to EINs and Social Security Numbers (SSN) because they’re both 9 digit identification codes. However, EINs are used to identify businesses, and social security numbers are used to identify individuals. Also, the IRS used to accept SSNs in place of EINs on Form 2290s, but that is no longer the case. If you use your SSN in the EIN field your form will be rejected.

Also, when it comes to the information on your 2290 such as your business name and address, it will need to match what the IRS has on file or it could be rejected. You can see if your information matches what the IRS has on file by contacting the IRS directly at (800) 829-4933.

If you don’t have an EIN you can apply for online for free with the IRS here. Once you finish applying you will instantly receive your 9 digit EIN, but please keep in mind that it will take about 15 days for your EIN to update in the IRS’s system and your 2290 could be rejected during this time.

Each EIN is is a unique code that never expires. However, as a sole proprietor you may need a new EIN if you’re subject to a bankruptcy proceeding, you incorporate, you take in new partners and operate as a partnership, or you purchase or inherit an existing business.

How To File Your 2290?

Why wait when you can go ahead and knock out your 2290 today? Go ahead and file online with ExpressTruckTax or the ExpressTruckTax App now. Simply follow the step-by-step filing guide to instantly complete your form. As a result, your Form 2290 will be transmitted directly to the IRS and you'll get your stamped Schedule 1 in about 15 minutes.

You can also call TSNAmerica at 803.386.0320 to file your Form 2290 today over the phone. Simply give them a call and an outstanding US-based representative will file your 2290 for you! It’s that easy. Plus, you will instantly get a copy of your stamped Schedule 1 via email.

Why Haven't You Filed Your 2290?

0
Hit the Jake Brake! You haven’t filed your 2290 yet?! What a rookie move. Especially when you have a few different ways to go ahead and pre-file today offered by ExpressTruckTax and TSNAmerica. Don’t wait until the last minute and find yourself in a pickle. Instead, go ahead and pre-file to knock out your Heavy Vehicle Use Tax Form 2290 today.

Reasons to Pre-File 2290

Just like with all of your other taxes if you don’t pay for or file your Heavy Vehicle Use Tax Form 2290 by the deadline you will face fees and penalties imposed by the IRS. If you don’t file because you can’t pay the amount you owe, consider getting a credit card or small loan to cover it, because the longer you wait, the more you’ll owe.

For example, the initial penalty for filing late is 4.5% of the tax due, and this accrues on a monthly basis for up to five months. Also, if you don’t pay your tax due you’ll face an additional penalty of .05% of the total amount you owe with an interest charge of .54% per month. That can make the amount you owe quickly skyrocket.

Some authorities will revoke your license if they find out you failed to file before the deadline. However, most states are a little lenient towards first-time offenders.

You Want Time to Fix Mistakes and Prepare

Some people don’t realize that they need an EIN or Employer Identification Number to file. You can get one by applying online with the IRS, but it will take about 15 days to become active in the system. During that 15 days, your form could get rejected! If you wait too close to the deadline before getting your EIN then you’ll miss it!

Plus, what happens if your form gets rejected for a simple mistake like an incorrect VIN? By pre-filing, you’ll know sooner if you’ve made a mistake that you need to correct on your form. With an e-file provider like ExpressTruckTax, you’ll be notified as to why your form was rejected so you can quickly fix any errors and retransmit your form. They even make it easy to amend your form and offer free VIN corrections.

You Want Your Stamped Schedule 1 Sooner

The longer you wait to file, the busier the IRS gets. When the IRS gets backed up they’ll take longer to stamp your Schedule 1 and send it back to you. Plus, if you file the old conventional paper way, you’ll have to wait for it to come in the mail.

Speed things up by pre-filing. Your Form 2290 will be transmitted directly to the IRS when they begin accepting returns. Then the IRS will stamp your Schedule 1 and you’ll instantly receive a copy via email. You can also choose to receive a copy via text or fax to get your carrier and the DMV off your back.

How to Pre-File?

Pre-Filing is incredibly simple. Just go to ExpressTruckTax.com and follow their step-by-step guide to file in a matter of minutes. The guide tells you exactly what information to enter and where. ExpressTruckTax also calculates the amount of Heavy Vehicle Use Tax you owe for you.

You could also call TSNAmerica at 803.386.0320 to pre-file for you, over the phone. That’s right, we said pre-file for you. This is the fewer hands on approach. It doesn’t matter which pre-filing option you choose, your information will still be transmitted to the IRS when they begin accepting returns, and you’ll get a copy of your stamped Schedule 1 almost immediately.

We’re Here to Help

If you have any questions regarding the pre-filing process please don’t hesitate to contact the dedicated ExpressTruckTax support team Monday - Friday from 8:30 am to 5:30 PM EST at 704.234.6005. We’re also available via live chat and offer 24/7 email support at support@expresstrucktax.com.

How Does Form 8849 Effect My 2290?

0

Sometimes while filing your Form 2290 you might see information about Form 8849, but what’s that? Do you need to be concerned with it? Today we’re here with the 8849 facts to answer your questions.

Form 8849

Form 8849 is the Claim or Refund of Excise Taxes Form. Excise taxes are the taxes paid on goods when they’re purchased and they’re often included in the price. An example of one of these goods is gasoline, hints your IFTA tax. Also, excise taxes include activities, such as highway usage by trucks.

Highway usage?! Now that might ring a bell because if you drive a qualifying vehicle of 55,000 pounds or more then you are required to file Form 2290 in order to get a copy of your stamped Schedule 1.

After filing your Form 2290 you can File Form 8849 to claim a credit or a refund on the amount of  HVUT paid. Anyone can file this form if they need to claim a refund or a credit.

Just remember, before you can File Form 8849 you need to file your Form 2290 and pay any Heavy Vehicle Taxes owed to the IRS for the current tax season first.

All you need to File Form 8849 is your name, EIN, and address, but it needs to match what the IRS has on file. You can verify your information by calling the IRS directly at 1-800-829-1040.

If you’ve already filed your 2290 then you should already have your Employee Identification Number, as the IRS requires you to have one to complete your return.

If you haven’t filed your 2290 and you need an EIN you can apply for one online with the IRS. It will take about 15 days for the EIN to become active if the e-filing system and forms may be rejected during that time.

Also, you will need the information for the vehicle that you’re claiming a refund for with details as to why you’re claiming a credit or refund, such as if it was stolen, sold, or destroyed with the date that the incident occurred.

5 Common HVUT E-Filing Mistakes

0

Taxes are already confusing enough. You have to know what form to file, when to file, how to file, and more. To make matters worse even if you file your form on time, it can still be rejected for simple mistakes! Then you have to go through the process of correcting your form.

Even though ExpressTruckTax has made that e-filing process and amendment process incredibly easy, with the HVUT season approaching, we want your form to get accepted the first time! So, check out these common HVUT mistakes to avoid!

Common HVUT Mistakes To Avoid

1. Entering Your VIN Incorrectly. Slow down, you need to make sure that all of your information gets entered correctly. Vehicle Identification Numbers consist of 17 characters that include both numbers and letters, so they can easily get mixed up.

Plus, VINs have incredibly small print. We often find ourselves squinting to reference our own! It might be hard to see if something is a 1 or an I, or a 0 or an O, so bust out your glasses to take a really good, close look at your VIN. After you enter it on your form double check it to makes sure that it’s correct.

2. Waiting too long to get your EIN. Sometimes people don’t realize that they need an EIN or Federal Tax Identification Number to file their 2290. Your EIN also serves as your Employment Identification Number.

You can apply for an EIN with the IRS directly, but keep in mind that it takes at least 15 days for your EIN to be added to the system. So, if you file your 2290 and apply for your EIN too close to the deadline, then your form could be rejected. If you need an EIN don’t wait til the last minute!

Some people ignore the fact that they need an EIN and put their SSN number in the field. The IRS no longer accepts Social Security Numbers in place of EINs!

3. Mismatching mistakes. Keep in mind that your business name, address, and EIN has to match what the IRS has on file. You can call the IRS directly to verify your information.

4. Don’t enter the wrong tax year. It’s really easy to put the wrong year on checks, dates, important forms, and more! While you can e-file for 2290’s for previous years, if you want to file for the current tax year, which is July 2016 - June 2017, make sure you have those dates correctly selected.

5. Filing is put off until the last minute. No one wants to deal with taxes, so they wait as long as they can to file them, which usually results in filing too late or finding out that your form needs corrections that you don’t have enough time to make before the deadline.

However, in reality, it’s extremely easy to e-file Form 2290. With ExpressTruckTax you can follow the step-by-step guide to easily handle your HVUT in a matter of minutes and receive your stamped Schedule 1 via email almost instantly.

You don’t even need a computer to file. Download the free ExpressTruckTax app to any iOS or Android Device to quickly and easily e-file your 2290 at any time, from any location. This makes it super easy to file even while you’re out on the road.

But wait, you don’t even have to wait! Go ahead and take care of your HVUT today by calling our sister company TSNAmerica at 803.386.0320 to pre-file over the phone today. All you have to do is call them, and they’ll file your Form 2290 for you, and transmit it the IRS on July 1st! As soon as the IRS stamps your Schedule 1 you’ll receive it via email!

ExpressTruckTax Makes E-Filing Your HVUT Easy

0

Taxes can’t be avoided. On an annual basis, we have to file our personal taxes, business taxes, truck taxes, and more. It’s just how the system works. Failure to file or pay your taxes involves a storm of penalties and fees that nobody wants to deal with.

However, the process of filing your taxes doesn’t have to be stressful. Here at ExpressTruckTax, we have made the process of e-filing your Heavy Vehicle Use Tax extremely quick and simple.

A Little About the HVUT

Your Heavy Vehicle Use Tax or HVUT Form 2290 needs to be annually filed by August 31st. For new or new to you vehicles, you need to file your HVUT the last day of the month after your vehicle’s first used month. Meaning that if you first use your new vehicle in April then your HVUT is due by May 31st.

You’re subject to the HVUT if you own a taxable highway motor vehicle that has a taxable gross weight of 55,000 pounds or more. A highway motor vehicle is any vehicle that’s self-propelled and designed to carry loads over public highways or the perform other functions. The vehicle weight includes the chassis, but not the load.

E-Filing With ExpressTruckTax

The e-filing process with ExpressTruckTax is quick and simple. You can e-file Form 2290 and receive your stamped Schedule 1 in a matter of minutes.

To get started simply create your free account with ExpressTruckTax by registering with your email address and creating a personal password.

Then you’ll enter your business information and EIN. Your EIN is your Employee Identification Number or Federal Tax Identification Number. This number is used by the IRS to identify a business entity. You can verify your EIN or apply for an EIN by calling the IRS directly at 1-800-829-4933. You generally receive your EIN 15 days after applying.

The next step involves selecting your tax year and first used month. The tax year for IRS Form 2290 starts on July 1st, 2016 and ends on June 30th, 2017. Your HVUT must be filed annually by August 31st or by the first used month for a new vehicle.

Next, you will need to enter your vehicle information, including the VIN or Vehicle Identification Number and taxable gross weight of your vehicle. Also, include if your vehicle is used for any special purposes like agricultural use or logging. You can enter multiple vehicles with ExpressTruckTax and your information will be saved for next time.

Then you will need to pay your HVUT to the IRS. We will calculate how much you owe based on the information you enter. The IRS payment options include Direct Debit or Electronic Funds Withdrawal, EFTPS, or a Check or Money Order.

We will perform an audit check on your form for any errors, and provide an information summary for you to review. Double check your information for any mistakes and edit your information if necessary. It’s very important that your VIN and business information are correct.

Once your payment information has been entered and you’re ready to transmit your return to the IRS, enter a 5 digit number of your choice at the bottom of the page to electronically sign and transmit to the IRS.

You will receive your stamped Schedule 1 via email once it is ready, and you can also elect to receive notifications via text and fax.

We’re Here To Help

If you have any questions please don't hesitate to contact our dedicated ExpressTruckTax support team. We will be more than happy to answer your questions and even walk you through the e-filing process. Gross Vehicle Weight Increase: E-Filing Form 2290 Amendments

0
Gross Vehicle Weight Increase
Gross Vehicle Weight Increase
As part of our series on e-filing Form 2290 Amendments, we have to discuss the elephant in the room.

Yup, that’s right… Gross vehicle weight increases! If your truck goes up to the next weight class, that means you have to pay an increase on the heavy vehicle tax you owed during tax season.

Weight Classes

There are eight weight classes for trucks, and three weight categories. They include light duty, which is 6-15k lbs, medium duty, coming in at 14-26k lbs, and heavy duty, which ranges from 26k-33 lbs.

These three categories then get broken down into eight smaller weight classes. The weight class then determines how much you will owe in heavy vehicle use taxes for that year. The heavier your vehicle - the higher your taxes will be.

Gross Vehicle Weight Increases

With ExpressTruckTax, all you need to do is e-file a Form 2290 Amendment to account for your vehicle’s gross weight increase. It’s easy, it’s economical, and we’ll tell you how to do it!

After signing in, you start your amendment like we’ve discussed in our previous posts. Once inside the amendment form, you select your vehicle’s first-used month, and then select the month where your vehicle’s weight change occurred.

If you already e-filed your HVUT form with ExpressTruckTax this year, you just select the vehicle(s) you need to amend from your previous return and choose your new weight class. If you’re changing the weight for multiple trucks, click “Save & Add Another.”

Pro-Tip: If you e-filed your 2290 with us this year, you are able to e-file a FREE VIN correction.

After that, you simply choose your payment method like you would for your regular 2290, and follow through to transmittal.

Don’t forget, you need to submit your amendment by the last day of the month following the month in which your weight increase occurred. If your weight increase occurred in February, you would need to file your amendment by the end of March.

The good news is, that’s all you need to do! It’s a pretty simple process, actually.

If you need help e-filing any amendments, call us at 704.234.6005, or hit us up on Facebook and Twitter. We’ll be here to help in any way we can!

3 Reasons Why Your IRS Form 2290 Was Rejected

0
3 Reasons Why Your IRS Form 2290 Was Rejected
3 Reasons why your IRS Form 2290 was Rejected
Thousands of truckers across the country are getting ready to e-file their Heavy Vehicle Use Tax return Form 2290, hoping to just press transmit and be done with it all.

But what happens when you e-file truck tax Form 2290 only to find out it was later REJECTED by the IRS? The last thing you want to find out is about a rejected 2290 on the truck tax due date!

Thankfully, when you e-file with ExpressTruckTax, you get unlimited re-filing for rejected returns.

Today, we’re going to examine why your 2290 may be rejected.

Rejected Because of EIN

Sometimes, filers will find that their Employer Identification Number is the source of their rejection.

This can sometimes happen if the EIN that you entered doesn’t match the EIN the IRS has on record.

If that’s the case, you need to contact the IRS directly to find out what information they have in their system.

If you have a brand new EIN, it will take on average about 10 business days for the EIN to register in the IRS system for you to e-file.

If you try to e-file your 2290 the same day that you receive your EIN, it will be rejected and the reason will be the "EIN does not match business name".

After your new EIN is registered in the IRS system, you can simply re-transmit your 2290 return (for free) and it should be accepted as long as there aren’t any more errors.

Rejected Because of Duplicate Filing

Your 2290 can only be accepted by the IRS one time. If you receive this particular rejection, it means your 2290 has already been filed and confirmed by the IRS.

The good part about this rejection, is that it requires no fix because your return has already been filed!

Rejected for Routing Issues

If you face a Routing Transit Number Rejection, it has to do with your payment. If you paid using the Electronic Funds Withdrawal (EFW) option, a bank routing number is required.

If the wrong information was entered for your routing number, your 2290 will be rejected. You can correct the routing and re-transmit to the IRS and should receive confirmation of acceptance in only a few minutes.

Note: If you entered the incorrect routing number or bank account number and the return is accepted, it is up to you to contact the IRS to resolve the issue. For best practices, always double check your numbers before transmitting your return to the IRS.

Hopefully, you’ll have a good experience e-filing Heavy Vehicle Use Tax Form 2290. The deadline is fast approaching, so be ready!

Note: The deadline to e-file Form 2290 online for 2016-2017 is August 31.

If you have any questions about rejected returns, you can reach our customer support experts at 704.234.6005.

2290 Filing for CPAs

0
2290 Filing for CPAs
2290 Filing for CPAs
We spend a lot of time conversing with truckers around these parts, but we’re overlooking a key audience of filers out there.

That’s right, to all of our accountant friends out there - we don’t mean to ignore you. So this post is for you!

If you’re a CPA who needs to file form 2290 online, read ahead!

Understanding Taxable Vehicles

Most CPA's know this, but if you’re new to the game, let’s touch up on taxable vehicles.

A taxable highway motor vehicle includes any self-propelled vehicle with a gross weight of 55,000 pounds or more designed to carry a load over public highways, whether or not also designed to perform other functions.

Examples of these heavy highway vehicles include trucks, truck tractors, and buses.

Some vehicles, like logging and agricultural trucks, have a different set of rules. ExpressTruckTax walks you through all those road bumps, though.

Welcome to the TruckZone

If you’re a CPA, you’re probably not filing for a single truck. With the TruckZone, you can manage all of your vehicles in one place.

As you add vehicles, we store them in the TruckZone. The next time you go to file IRS 2290s, you can easily retrieve the trucks and drivers. You can even search by truck or unit number, driver, VIN, month filed, and even by the date the Schedule 1 was received.

The ExpressTruckTax Truck Zone can upload hundreds even thousands of trucks at one time.

If you need to file multiple Form 2290 returns, we’ve broken down the steps to e-file multiple 2290 forms.

If you have any issues with bulk uploading or transmitting, please contact our customer support experts at 704.234.6005.
