Almost out of Time! Avoid Penalties, File IRS 2290 Now

0
Truckers speed into IRS 2290 filing, hurrying to file their 2290 highway use tax before the HVUT 2290 deadline.
The IRS 2290 filing deadline is coming up on September 3rd, 2019.

If you’re thinking of putting off filing IRS 2290 or waiting to pay your heavy vehicle use tax, I’m here to prepare you for the IRS penalties you can expect.

Plus, we’ll go over how exactly to avoid those penalties while saving money and time.

Let’s get started.

Everything You Need For IRS 2290 Filing

IRS Form 2290 Filing Deadline

As mentioned, the 2290 deadline is September 3rd, 2019.

This is the deadline to file IRS Form 2290 and pay your 2290 tax amount.

Failing to file and pay heavy vehicle use tax will result in penalties from the IRS. The penalty for failing to file IRS Form 2290 on time is 4.5% of the total highway tax 2290 amount you owe, with additional 0.54% interest each month.

However, the penalty for filing your IRS Form 2290 but failing to pay your highway tax 2290 amount is 0.5% of the HVUT payment, substantially less than failing to file.

The interest is the same.

If you can’t afford to make your HVUT payment right this moment, file IRS Form 2290 anyway.

There’s no reason to miss the deadline. The whole process takes a matter of minutes and can be done from your phone.

IRS 2290 Filing Tips

Save time by gathering information before you dive in. Here’s what you need for IRS Form 2290 filing:

-  EIN

You must have an EIN to file IRS 2290. If you need one, you can try to get one from the IRS in time, but we suggest calling TSNAmerica at 803.386.0320.

-  Business Information

You’ll need to enter your business name and address at the beginning of your IRS Form 2290.

-  VIN

This is your Vehicle Identification Number, and should be 17 characters long.

-  Authorized Signatory Details

This is the 5-digit unique signature PIN you’ll need to use to sign your IRS Form 2290.

-  Gross Taxable Weight

Your vehicle’s gross taxable weight is its weight when fully equipped for service, minus the weight of you and the load. You can find this on your cab card or sticker inside the door.

-  HVUT Payment Information

Pay your HVUT 2290 tax amount online fast. Leading IRS-authorized e-file providers like ExpressTruckTax will offer multiple payment options, including credit card, direct debit, EFW (Electronic Funds Transfer), and EFTPS (Electronic Federal Tax Payment System).

Once you’re ready, choose an IRS-authorized online filing system. Filing IRS 2290 highway use tax online will save you loads of time and ensure that you receive your 2290 Schedule 1 fast

The Quickest Way to File

As mentioned, filing IRS 2290 and paying HVUT 2290 online will save you tons of time.

The Most Common IRS Form 2290 Mistakes to Avoid

0
Driver finding mistakes on his filed IRS Form 2290
There’s nothing worse than having to file your annual truck taxes twice. 😐

Avoid IRS Form 2290 mistakes this season when you e-file 2290 with ExpressTruckTax.

We’ve got a few tips to make the process as painless as possible and save you from any unnecessary corrections.

Filing IRS Form 2290 before the deadline will save you tons of money, but mistakes could keep you from meeting the Form 2290 for 2019 due date and cost you a sweet penny.

Avoid frustration and confusion by double checking some information that commonly delays IRS Form 2290 approval.

The Most Common IRS Form 2290 Mistakes to Avoid

5 Common IRS Form 2290 Mistakes

Here are some things to be extra cautious about when filing your 2290 Form.

Common IRS Form 2290 Mistakes

How to Check These Areas For Error

  • 1) EIN (Employer Identification Number) or VIN (Vehicle Identification Number)

A unique EIN is assigned to each company operating in the US as a form of identification for tax purposes. Your EIN should be a string of 9 numbers, presented in this format: 12-3456789.

Since this number looks similar to a social security number, filers often confuse the two, causing the IRS to reject the 2290 Tax Form.

Keep in mind that it takes 10 business days for the IRS to update its database with a new EIN. If you’re applying for a new EIN, do so at least a month before you e-file IRS 2290 to avoid delays.

Your VIN should be 17 characters long and include both numbers and letters. Check your VIN before submitting your 2290 Tax Form. If incorrect, your IRS Form 2290 will be rejected.

The best online tax filing is quick. Don’t waste unnecessary time with mistakes. When you e-file 2290, double check your Form 2290 for 2019 and ensure that your EIN and VIN are correct.

  • 2) First Used Month or Filing Year

When filing IRS Form 2290, make sure you use the correct filing year.

Note: If you’ve used an online filing service before, the drop-down menu could be set to a previous 2290 Tax Form file year. Double check!

Secondly, choose an accurate first used month.

The first used month is the month you first used the truck on the highway during the tax period, which runs from July 1 to June 30 of the next year. Your Truck Tax form is due on the last day of the month after your first used month.

This means if you first used your vehicle in July, as most drivers do during the tax season, then you will need to file your IRS 2290 Tax Form by August 31.

  • 3) Gross Taxable Weight

IRS Form 2290 tax calculations can be tricky, but don’t sweat it. At ExpressTruckTax, our system automatically calculates your owed tax amount. Leave all 2290 tax form math to us.

It’s important to find the best online tax filing service to save yourself time and money. ExpressTruckTax can help!

  • 4) Authorized Signatory Details

It's super easy to sign your IRS 2290 online. All you need is a 5-digit authorized signature code. Still, no matter how simple it sounds, please just… double check. 😬

  • 5) Business Name & Address

You'd be surprised at how many returns are rejected for this information being incorrect!

The wrong business name and address is one most common errors on the heavy vehicle use tax form 2290. Don’t let it happen to you!

Double check your business name and address before submitting your IRS Form 2290.

Why is it so Important to Avoid IRS 2290 Mistakes?

Even the simplest mistake on your IRS Form 2290 can cause serious problems. For starters, your 2290 Tax Form will definitely be rejected by the IRS.

This is a huge time waster and may cause you to miss the HVUT 2290 Tax Form Deadline.

If this happens and you miss the deadline, you’ll need to correct your Form 2290 and file again, attaching an explanation to show reasonable cause for the delay of your heavy vehicle use tax.

There’s no guaranteeing that your statement will be accepted by the IRS, and if it’s not, you’ll face heavy IRS 2290 Tax Form penalties.

The penalty for failing to file IRS Form 2290 by August 31st is 4.5% of the total tax amount owed. Plus, you still have to pay the base HVUT 2290 amount you owe.
In addition, this penalty will increase monthly for up to 5 months, with an additional .54% interest added for each month that it remains unpaid.

Save yourself while you can and double check your Form 2290 before you e-file 2290 online.

Pay Your HVUT Your Way On Your Time

0
Computer making an online paymentYou've taken the time to e file, before the start of the Form 2290 2019 tax season, now you are wondering what comes next. We have worked alongside the IRS for years to ensure you always come out on top. ExpressTruckTax allows you to pay your Heavy Vehicle Use Tax, also known as HVUT 2019, the way you want. It's your money, so who are we to tell you how to use it?

Payments We Accept

ExpressTruckTax accepts HVUT 2019 payments via credit card, debit card, direct debit, electronic funds withdrawal (EFW), Electronic Federal Tax Payment System - EFTPS online, or by check/money order. Making your IRS 2290 payment is easy with ExpressTruckTax. There are options for your IRS 2290 payment that aren't offered everywhere, so having us in your corner this year is the correct way to e file 2290.

Credit or Debit Card

We are happy to say that we are the only e file Form 2290 filing solution partnered with Official Payments, leading electronic payment solution for the IRS, states, municipalities, and colleges/universities nationwide.

ExpressTruckTax clients are privileged to pay 2290 with credit card or debit card.
The 2019-20 tax year is the second year that truckers can pay 2290 online. Heavy Use Vehicle Tax online payments with the pay 2290 with credit card method are not supported by all e file 2290 filing solutions, so we are proud to be amongst those leading the way.

Direct Debit or Electronic Funds Withdrawal (EFW)

When you use this method you are authorizing the IRS to debit your owed amount from your account. This method requires you to provide your bank account number and routing.

It is important to double check the account information to avoid possible penalties for late payment. The IRS typically debits accounts within 24-48 hours, so double check the amount in your account to avoid your payment being declined.

Electronic Federal Tax Payment System (EFTPS)

ExpressTruckTax clients can pay 2290 online with the Electronic Federal Tax Payment System (EFTPS). EFTPS online is a system of paying federal taxes electronically using the Internet or phone. EFTPS online allows users to schedule payments, in advance. When this method is selected you will automatically be directed to the EFTPS online website. It can take up to 10 business days to create an account, so for those choosing to wait until the last minute this method may not be the best idea.

Check or Money Order

If choosing to make an IRS 2290 payment with a check or money order there is a certain procedure you will have to follow and pay close attention to.

We've listed the steps for your HVUT 2019 convenience:

  • Make your check or money order payable to the United States Treasury. Write your name, address, EIN, 'IRS Form 2290', and date (as entered in box 3) on your payment.
  • Detach your 2290-V and send it with your payment. If you filed electronically, do not submit your Form 2290 or stamped Schedule 1 with your payment voucher. (*Do not staple your payment voucher, payment, or Form 2290 together.)

Send your payment and the 2290-V voucher to:

Internal Revenue Service,
P.O. Box 804525,
Cincinnati, OH 45280-4525

We Got You Covered

Whether you choose to make an online payment for your HVUT 2019 using EFTPS online, pay 2290 with credit card or debit card, go the direct debit route, try the Electronic Funds Withdrawal payment method, or choose the classic check or money order method, ExpressTruckTax has you covered.

Could a Disregard of Ethics Cost You More?

0
Department of Transformation Elaine Chao secretary of transportation stock in Vulcan Materials CoDespite the conflict of interest and ethics agreement signed, Transportation Secretary, Elaine L. Chao has now gained 13 percent in stock earnings since agreeing to receive a cash payout for stocks she owns in Vulcan Materials Company. Vulcan Materials Company is America's largest supplier of material used in road-paving and building. It is reported that the 13 percent increase is equivalent to $40,000 on top of the $400,000 she has already made from the stock had she relinquished them on the date she had agreed to, April 2018.

The disregard of ethics from Chao has a former director of the Office of Government Ethics, Walter Shaub curious as to what message this is sending to the staff of the Department of Transportation (DOT). You may be wondering what this has to do with you, but with the Heavy Vehicle Use Tax (HVUT) deadline approaching you may find yourself shelling out more in taxes than you should.

What To Know About HVUT

The HVUT is an annual fee that is estimated for vehicles exceeding a gross weight of 55,000 pounds to pay to the government to help pay for construction on roads. It is a significant source of transportation funding. HVUT revenue goes toward financing a broad spectrum of transportation programs including, highway infrastructure, improvements and much more.  The HVUT rate is determined by calculating the gross taxable weight. You can find your vehicles gross taxable weight by adding:

  • The unloaded weight of the vehicle fully equipped
  • The unloaded weight of all trailers or semi-trailers fully equipped used with the vehicle
  • The weight of the max load customarily carried on the vehicle or trailers typically used

If a vehicles gross taxable weight is below 55,000 pounds no taxes are required to be paid, but if a vehicle is between 55,000 pounds to 75,000 pounds the tax rate is $100 plus $22 per 1,000 pounds over 55,000 pounds. Any vehicle exceeding 75,000 pounds is required to pay a tax rate of $550.

Could HVUT Rates Change?

The lack of ethics with the DOT starting from the head down can cause unnecessary highway infrastructure to be conducted. With unnecessary improvement comes unnecessary payment, which could ultimately make higher HVUT rates necessary to keep up with the cost of new infrastructure. It is unlikely that this one incident can cause such a dramatic change, however, if what Shaub suggests is true, there may be more cracks in the code of ethics discovered amongst the DOT.

The One Thing Truck Drivers Cannot Escape

0
Taxes can be confusing. First of all, there are a ton of different returns to remember from income tax returns, IFTA returns, Heavy Vehicle Use Taxes (HVUT), and more. Second of all, each of these different returns have different due dates to remember.

The HVUT Form 2290 deadline can be especially tricky because it can be due at different times of the year. However, don’t let it grind your gears because we are here to go over the deadline so you will know exactly when to file.

Your Form 2290 Deadline

Alright, so the HVUT Form 2290 tax period runs from July 1 to June 30 of the following year. The current HVUT tax period began on July 1, 2017 and will end on June 30, 2018. This is important to know because the HUVT deadline is based on your vehicle's first use month.

Your first use month is the month that you first use your heavy vehicle on public highways during the tax period. Then your 2290 is due the last day of the month following the first use month.

Because most people first use their heavy vehicles in July at the beginning of the period their deadline is August 31st. However, if you don’t use your vehicle until October then your deadline will be on November 30.

See, no big deal, the deadline is easy! Just remember it’s due the last day of the month following your first used month. Now let’s see what other HVUT 2290 Form  topics we can tackle.

Instantly get your Form 2290 Stamped Schedule 1 With ExpressTruckTax

What Is A Taxable Heavy Vehicle?

You have to file Form 2290 for all of your taxable heavy vehicles, which are highway motor vehicles with a taxable gross weight of 55,000 pounds or more. A highway motor vehicle is any vehicle that is self-propelled and designed to carry a load over public highways, regardless if they are also designed to perform other functions.

Examples of these vehicles include trucks, truck tractors, and buses. Usually, vans, pickup trucks, and panel trucks are not subject to the HVUT because they weight less than 55,000 pounds.

What Are The HVUT Penalties?

If you fail to file Form 2290 by the deadline you will have penalties to face. The penalty for filing late is 4.5% of the total tax you owe and this amount will accrue on a monthly basis for up to five months.

Also, if you fail to make a payment by the deadline you will face an additional penalty of .5% of the total amount due. Plus, you will face an additional interest charge of .54% on a monthly basis as well.

Well, that’s super easy. Head to ExpressTruckTax.com to create your free account then follow the step-by-step e-filing guide to complete your form in a matter of minutes. The instructions tell you what information is needed and where so you can transmit your form directly to the IRS in no time!

What are the Requirements for IRS Form 2290?

It’s almost truck tax time, Trucking Nation.

Which means you need to know the requirements to e-file IRS Form 2290.

Don’t worry, we have you covered. You simply need your taxable vehicle information, employer ID numbers, and the correct vehicle identification numbers.

Taxable Vehicle Information

What makes a taxable vehicle… taxable? A highway motor vehicle includes any self-propelled vehicle designed to carry a load over public highways and roadways, and can be designed for additional functions, as well.

A vehicle consists of a chassis and body, but excludes the load. No matter what the vehicle is designed for — whether it's a highway passenger transportation vehicle or a designed special kind of cargo, there will need to be a 2290 filed for it.

Employer ID Numbers

An Employer Identification Number (EIN), also known as a Federal Tax Identification Number, is used to identify a business entity. Generally, businesses need an EIN.

You need an EIN to file Form 2290. You can apply online to receive your EIN. If the customer has recently applied and received EIN from the IRS, it takes about 15 days to get into the e-file system. If you e-file your 2290 during this period, the IRS will reject the filing.

Correct Vehicle Identification Numbers

Another important requirement for Form 2290 is your vehicle identification number. Your VIN identifies the individual truck you are e-filing your HVUT 2290 for.

Unfortunately, the VIN is a string of numbers and letters—which means plenty of people get them wrong come tax time! Hey, we can’t blame you.

The good news is, we offer FREE Form 2290 VIN corrections!

When it comes time to e-file, you know that ExpressTruckTax is here for you! We’re ready to help you with our safe, secure software, user friendly features, and our dedicated, US-based customer support team.

7 Ways Truckers Can Prevent Accidents

0
Prevent Truck Accidents
Prevent Truck Accidents
There’s nothing worse than a close call on the highway. Well, except for an actual incident!

So what’s the cause of the many trucking accidents? It’s hard to pick one thing, but we know there are a few key factors that always come up.

How can you prevent accidents on the road? By starting with yourself!

We've listened to truckers and health experts to put together these 7 tips for accident prevention.

Get More Sleep

Nothing is more dangerous than falling asleep behind the wheel of a 70,000 lb truck speeding down the highway. Which is why you hear so many people in the industry discussing the sleeping patterns, health, and practices of drivers. Federal regulations do not allow more than 12 consecutive hours of road time, but there are many drivers who do more than this.

How can you avoid sleep deprivation? Rest for short intervals and take breaks when you’re tired. With small amounts of recharge time, you can prevent sleep related accidents.

Sit with Proper Posture

Over at TruckLogics blog, we told you about how you need to watch your back while you drive. And it’s true! When you sit comfortably and don’t damage your back, you reduce the likelihood of personal injury and even roadside incidents.

Keep Your Distance

Always be aware of your lane distance as you cross the highways. Knowing your stopping and starting distance, break distance, and proper speeds will be essential for proper safety on the roads.

Stay Healthy

You know what sounds dangerous? Having a heart attack as you zoom down I-95, or any local highway.

That’s why we constantly tell drivers to eat healthy and exercise. Sure, exhaustion is dangerous enough, but your heart will be all the better with proper nutrition and regular exercise. With that one-two punch, you can reduce your excess weight

Bet you’d improve your sleep, too!

Watch for Blind Spots

Depending on what truck you’re driving, your blind spot is gonna be different. Make sure you know what your blind spot distance is, so you will know how far away a car or a person really is from your truck.

This will prevent major accidents on the road, when backing up, and even when removing items from your truck during a delivery.

Maintain Your Truck

Sure, maybe your employer is “responsible” for truck maintenance as a whole, but you should always implement pre-trip inspections and keep an eye on your truck out there on the road. These checks not only reduce the possibilities for something to go wrong, they also keep you secure in your work and your driving.

Manage Your Time & Profession

Time is money. Trucking is money. Instead of reacting to what happens on the road, plan ahead and document frequently. What we’re saying is, use a trucking software like TruckLogics to stay ahead of the game.

Sure, it might not prevent an accident as well as keeping the proper distance, but having access to all of your receipts, bills of lading, and invoices in one handy phone app will reduce a lot of the stress of your life.

Don’t forget, we’re only a few months away from your 2290 deadline - be sure to keep up with us on Twitter and Facebook for the latest HVUT e-filing updates!

EIN Is REQUIRED to File Form 2290

0

If you are filing Form 2290 for Heavy Vehicle Use Tax (HVUT), you must have an EIN to file the return. The IRS does not accept Social Security Numbers for the Form 2290. An EIN is an Employer Identification Number, also known as a Federal Tax Identification Number, and can be used to verify a business entity.

If you do not have an EIN, you can apply for one online through the IRS website or if you don’t have the time or unable to get to a computer, you can have a service provider, like Truck Services of North America to do it for you.

NOTE: Remember, for vehicles first used in January, the due date to file your Form 2290 is February 28, 2014. While you can get your EIN immediately, it can take the IRS up to 10 business days to update new EINs into their system; so you will want to get your EIN today to ensure it is in the system by the deadline!

Once your EIN is in the IRS system or if you already have one, you can file your Form 2290 return and receive your Stamped Schedule 1 within minutes at ExpressTruckTax. To E-File Form 2290 online now, go to ExpressTruckTax.com or contact our Express Tax Support Center in Rock Hill, SC at 704-234-6005 or email us at support@ExpressTruckTax.com.  We have Spanish Support too!
