Why Haven't You Filed Your 2290?

0
Hit the Jake Brake! You haven’t filed your 2290 yet?! What a rookie move. Especially when you have a few different ways to go ahead and pre-file today offered by ExpressTruckTax and TSNAmerica. Don’t wait until the last minute and find yourself in a pickle. Instead, go ahead and pre-file to knock out your Heavy Vehicle Use Tax Form 2290 today.

Reasons To Pre-File

You Don’t Want A Fine

Just like with all of your other taxes if you don’t pay for or file your Heavy Vehicle Use Tax Form 2290 by the deadline you will face fees and penalties imposed by the IRS. If you don’t file because you can’t pay the amount you owe, consider getting a credit card or small loan to cover it, because the longer you wait, the more you’ll owe.

For example, the initial penalty for filing late is 4.5% of the tax due, and this accrues on a monthly basis for up to five months. Also, if you don’t pay your tax due you’ll face an additional penalty of .05% of the total amount you owe with an interest charge of .54% per month. That can make the amount you owe quickly skyrocket.

Some authorities will revoke your license if they find out you failed to file before the deadline. However, most states are a little lenient towards first-time offenders.

You Want Time To Fix Mistakes And Prepare

Some people don’t realize that they need an EIN or Employer Identification Number to file. You can get one by applying online with the IRS, but it will take about 15 days to become active in the system. During that 15 days your form could get rejected! If you wait too close to the deadline before getting your EIN then you’ll miss it!

Plus, what happens if your form gets rejected for a simple mistake like an incorrect VIN? By pre-filing, you’ll know sooner if you’ve made a mistake that you need to correct on your form. With an e-file provider like ExpressTruckTax you’ll be notified as to why your form was rejected so you can quickly fix any errors and retransmit your form. They even make it easy to amend your form and offer free VIN corrections.

You Want Your Stamped Schedule 1 Sooner

The longer you wait to file, the busier the IRS gets. When the IRS gets backed up they’ll take longer to stamp your Schedule 1 and send it back to you. Plus, if you file the old conventional paper way, you’ll have to wait for it to come in the mail.

Speed things up by pre-filing. Your Form 2290 will be transmitted directly to the IRS when they begin accepting returns. Then the IRS will stamp your Schedule 1 and you’ll instantly receive a copy via email. You can also choose to receive a copy via text or fax to get your carrier and the DMV off your back.

How To Pre-File

Pre-Filing is incredibly simple. Just go to ExpressTruckTax.com and follow their step-by-step guide to file in a matter of minutes. The guide tells you exactly what information to enter and where. ExpressTruckTax also calculates the amount of Heavy Vehicle Use Tax you owe for you.

You could also call TSNAmerica at 803.386.0320 to pre-file for you, over the phone. That’s right, we said pre-file for you. This is the less hands on approach. It doesn’t matter which pre-filing option you choose, your information will still be transmitted to the IRS when they begin acceptign returns, and you’ll get a copy of your stamped Schedule 1 almost immediately.

We’re Here To Help

If you have any questions regarding the pre-filing process please don’t hesitate to contact the dedicated ExpressTruckTax support team Monday - Friday from 8:30 am to 5:30 PM EST at 704.234.6005. We’re also available via live chat and offer 24/7 email support at support@expresstrucktax.com.

ExpressTruckTax Makes E-Filing Your HVUT Easy

0

Taxes can’t be avoided. On an annual basis, we have to file our personal taxes, business taxes, truck taxes, and more. It’s just how the system works. Failure to file or pay your taxes involves a storm of penalties and fees that nobody wants to deal with.

However, the process of filing your taxes doesn’t have to be stressful. Here at ExpressTruckTax, we have made the process of e-filing your Heavy Vehicle Use Tax extremely quick and simple.

A Little About the HVUT

Your Heavy Vehicle Use Tax or HVUT Form 2290 needs to be annually filed by August 31st. For new or new to you vehicles, you need to file your HVUT the last day of the month after your vehicle’s first used month. Meaning that if you first use your new vehicle in April then your HVUT is due by May 31st.

You’re subject to the HVUT if you own a taxable highway motor vehicle that has a taxable gross weight of 55,000 pounds or more. A highway motor vehicle is any vehicle that’s self-propelled and designed to carry loads over public highways or the perform other functions. The vehicle weight includes the chassis, but not the load.

E-Filing With ExpressTruckTax

The e-filing process with ExpressTruckTax is quick and simple. You can e-file Form 2290 and receive your stamped Schedule 1 in a matter of minutes.

To get started simply create your free account with ExpressTruckTax by registering with your email address and creating a personal password.

Then you’ll enter your business information and EIN. Your EIN is your Employee Identification Number or Federal Tax Identification Number. This number is used by the IRS to identify a business entity. You can verify your EIN or apply for an EIN by calling the IRS directly at 1-800-829-4933. You generally receive your EIN 15 days after applying.

The next step involves selecting your tax year and first used month. The tax year for IRS Form 2290 starts on July 1st, 2016 and ends on June 30th, 2017. Your HVUT must be filed annually by August 31st or by the first used month for a new vehicle.

Next, you will need to enter your vehicle information, including the VIN or Vehicle Identification Number and taxable gross weight of your vehicle. Also, include if your vehicle is used for any special purposes like agricultural use or logging. You can enter multiple vehicles with ExpressTruckTax and your information will be saved for next time.

Then you will need to pay your HVUT to the IRS. We will calculate how much you owe based on the information you enter. The IRS payment options include Direct Debit or Electronic Funds Withdrawal, EFTPS, or a Check or Money Order.

We will perform an audit check on your form for any errors, and provide an information summary for you to review. Double check your information for any mistakes and edit your information if necessary. It’s very important that your VIN and business information are correct.

Once your payment information has been entered and you’re ready to transmit your return to the IRS, enter a 5 digit number of your choice at the bottom of the page to electronically sign and transmit to the IRS.

You will receive your stamped Schedule 1 via email once it is ready, and you can also elect to receive notifications via text and fax.

We’re Here To Help

If you have any questions please don't hesitate to contact our dedicated ExpressTruckTax support team. We will be more than happy to answer your questions and even walk you through the e-filing process. We’re available Monday-Friday from 9 AM to 6 PM EST at 704.234.6005, via live chat, and via 24/7 email support at support@expresstrucktax.com

What to Do If Your Form 2290 Return is Rejected by the IRS?
What to Do If Your Form 2290 Return is Rejected by the IRS?

So you were very proactive this year, and you decided to go ahead and e-file irs form 2290.

But then you discover, your 2290 tax return has been rejected by the IRS. So what does that mean for you?

Basically, you need to keep filing until you get things right.

Thankfully, we here at ExpressTruckTax believe in unlimited retransmissions for rejected returns.

Now we've heard some people would rather just not file their 2290s than bother with re-transmissions - but that doesn't make any sense.

What are the Penalties for Failing to File Form 2290?

Basically, you’re going to get hit with a bunch of financial costs if you fail to, or are late, paying
Form 2290. HVUT penalties can range from 4.5 percent of total tax due, assessed on a monthly basis up to five months to an additional monthly penalty equal to 0.5 percent of total tax due for late filers.

Additional interest charges of 0.54 percent per month accrue as well.

Do I Need to E-File Tax Form 2290?

When you e-file your 2290 with ExpressTruckTax, you receive your Schedule 1, which shows an IRS e-file watermark with the date the return was received and processed. This will be accepted by all DOT’s, DMV’s, and other federal authorities.

ExpressTruckTax automatically emails the stamped Schedule 1 after the IRS accepts your 2290. We can also send you updates via text and fax–plus we can even notify your company/carrier.

Your stamped Schedule 1 counts as your proof of payment.

What if you e-filed your tax form 2290 and then something changes—like your vehicle weight?

Just File a 2290 Amendment

When the information on the vehicle you filed for changes, the IRS wants you to file a Form 2290 Amendment. If you want to get that taken care of quickly, just e-file it with ExpressTruckTax. The choice is simple.

So don't skip out on your tax filing, just because you're frustrated. In fact, with unlimited retransmission—its all easy!

So if your 2290 is rejected this truck tax season, don’t worry! Instead, login to ExpressTruckTax, and we’ll take care of what we can.

If you file by paper with the IRS, you can expect to receive your stamped Schedule 1 within 6 weeks after they receive your form 2290.

How You Get Your Stamped Schedule 1

Understanding the Stamped Schedule 1:

When you e-file IRS form 2290, the IRS stamps it with a digital watermark. This digital schedule 1 is your official proof of payment, and all DMV locations are required to accept this document.

Three Easy Ways to Pay Your HVUT

0

Gathering the funds to pay your HVUT each year is headache enough! Sending those funds to the IRS should be the easy part.

That’s why ExpressTruckTax has gone above and beyond to make paying your heavy vehicle use taxes easy. We offer three ways to pay your taxes, and no matter which one you choose, rest assured that we’ve made it quick and simple.

Here’s the lowdown on each payment method. Choose whichever is most convenient for you!

Direct Debit

  • Also known as EFW (Electronic Funds Withdrawal), this is the fastest, easiest way to pay your HVUT, and you can only do it if you E-file!
  • EFW means the IRS will initiate a direct debit from your bank account. In order to do this, they’ll need your bank routing number and account number. Both can be located along the bottom of one of your checks.
  • When paying with direct debit, the IRS will not process your return on a weekend or holiday, but on the next business day. For immediate processing of your return, pay by Check or Money Order (see below).

EFTPS

  • The Electronic Federal Tax Payment System may be a mouthful, but it’s another free and convenient way to pay your HVUT.
  • A free service provided by the US Dept. of the Treasury, you must register with this system 5-7 business days prior to your first payment. Register for free by visiting http://www.eftps.gov or by calling 1-800-555-4477. When you enroll, be sure to have your EIN, bank account, bank routing number, and address and name as they appear on IRS documents.
  • What’s so cool about EFTPS? You can schedule a business payment up to 120 days in advance. But keep in mind that you can’t schedule same-day payments. So be sure to schedule at least 1 business day prior to your tax due date!

Check or Money Order

  • This is the only way to pay if you need your stamped Schedule 1 on a weekend or holiday.
  • When paying by check or money order, you must submit a completed 2290-V Payment Voucher. Here’s the good news. ExpressTruckTax creates one for you! It’s page 5 of your completed 2290. Just detach the bottom portion, paper clip to your payment (do not staple them together!), and mail. How easy was that?!
  • “Where do I mail it to,” you ask? (Yes, I can hear your thoughts!) Instructions are on your voucher, but for the sake of convenience, here’s the address:

    Internal Revenue Service,
    P.O. Box 804525,
    Cincinnati, OH 45280-4525

You’ll notice that a credit card is not one of the available payment options. That’s because the IRS no longer accepts tax payments via credit card. You will, however, need a credit card when E-filing to pay our $9.90 E-filing fee, so keep your card on hand!

Of course, if you need any assistance on the payment page, or along any other step of your E-filing journey, just reach out to our support team! They can help you choose which payment option suits you best. Just call 704.234.6005 or for 24/7 assistance email support@expresstrucktax.com.

Friday Is The Deadline to File Form 2290 for Vehicles First Used in January

0
Friday, February 28th is the deadline to file Form 2290 for Heavy Vehicles first placed on public highways during the month of January. IRS Form 2290, is the form you use to file your Heavy Vehicle Use Tax or HVUT. this tax is imposed by the federal government in order to help pay for the damage done to our public highways by vehicles that weigh 55,000 or more.

You can pay your Highway Use Tax quickly and easily using ExpressTruckTax.com. All you need is some basic business information, EIN, VIN and Gross Vehicle Weight. You will have the option to choose which form of payment you would like to use to pay your IRS fees and then transmit your information directly to the IRS. Within minutes you will receive your Stamped Schedule 1, which is your receipt or proof that you filed your Form 2290.

Your tax due will be prorated based on the number of months the vehicle will have been used during the tax year. So vehicles that were placed in service during the month of January will need to file HVUT using the Form 2290 by February 28th, and the tax will be based on 6 months, instead of the full year.

If you are on the road and unable to get to a computer before tomorrow’s deadline, you can use our mobile site athttp://m.expresstrucktax.com.

For more information or to get started today, visit ExpressTruckTax.com or contact our Express Tax Support Center in Rock Hill, SC at 704-234-6005 or email us at support@ExpressTruckTax.com. We have Spanish Support too!

What is the Heavy Vehicle Use Tax Used For?

0

The Heavy Vehicle Use Tax or HVUT is an annual fee assessed on heavy vehicles operating on public highways at registered gross weights equal to or exceeding 55,000 pounds. The gross taxable weight of a vehicle is determined by adding the unloaded weight of the motor vehicle and any trailers together with the maximum load customarily carried on-road by the truck-trailer combination. IRS Form 2290 is filed annually to pay the HVUT due on the taxable vehicle and proof of payment is the Stamped Schedule 1.

The damage to the road surface caused by heavy trucks is 160,000 times more than that of a car, according to the findings of the American Association of State Highways Official (AASHO) road test. The tax, which is based on the vehicle weight, is a significant source of transportation funding in the US. The HVUT ensures that operators of heavy trucks pay a little more for the highway network relative to the motorists than the light trucks who meet their responsibility through other forms of taxes (e.g., registration fees, motor fuel taxes) but do less damage to the system.  The monies collected are used to help pay for road repairs and maintenance.

The IRS has simplified the process of filing Form 2290 and paying your HVUT taxes with the ability to E-File.  Anyone who is filing a return with 25 or more vehicles is required to file electronically, but everyone is encouraged to do so.  Through an IRS Authorized E-File Provider, like ExpressTruckTax.com, you can file your Form 2290, pay your HVUT taxes owed to the IRS and receive your Stamped Schedule 1 within minutes.  Having the option to E-File makes the annual filing process quick and easy.
