Trucker Lifestyle: How To Travel With a Pet

Trucking dog at home in his truck drivers seat.
Not all companies allow pets, but luckily, some allow truckers bring their furry friends.

Much like an apartment complex, these trucking companies often require a pet deposit, which can range anywhere from $100-$500. Their policies may also restrict the weight of your pet.

No matter how tempted you are to take your pup on the road, don’t ever just assume that your trucking company or customers are okay with it.

Make sure you know a site’s policy before you arrive.

Military bases, electric plants, and anywhere with hazardous materials and high security will NOT allow you to bring a pet on site.

Truck drivers who bring pets along say they enjoy having company on the road. Sometimes it’s nice to have someone to keep up with trucking news and listen to trucker radio shows with.

Considering adding a pet to your trucker lifestyle? Here are some things to consider, and a list of the best dogs for truckers.

Introducing a Pet to the Trucker Lifestyle

Benefits of Traveling with a Pet

Most truck drivers who bring their pets will tell you that the benefits of trucking with a pet greatly outweigh the disadvantages.

Pets can help truck drivers combat loneliness and overcome negative aspects of the trucking lifestyle.

For instance, bringing a dog forces truck drivers to get out and go for walks, helping maintain wellness on the road and increasing energy and attention while driving.

Dogs may also motivate you to take more breaks, which is especially important for summer trucking.

Plus, animals are more alert to certain situations, and offer a level of protection on the road.

How to Travel with a Pet

If you choose to bring a pet, keep current shot/medical records with you in case of an inspection.

Also, consider bringing baby wipes to clean your pet and eliminate smell when you aren’t able to give your pet a bath.

Pack puppy pads for emergencies, pet food, and treats.

Most truckers who bring pets trucking have dogs. The best dogs for truckers are older dogs because they are calmer and able to stay still for longer periods of time. Puppies have too much energy and need to be let out much more often.

If you’re looking for an older dog companion, check out your local Humane Society or animal shelter.

In terms of breed, some of the best dogs for truckers include:

1. Toy Breeds

Chihuahuas are some of the best dogs for truckers because they're small.

Toy breeds, like chihuahuas, require little grooming. Plus, they’re so small that truck stops and motels probably won’t care if they’re around.

2. Bulldogs

Bulldog lounges in owner's arms, enjoying the trucking lifestyle.

Bulldogs don’t shed much and are also low maintenance. They don’t require much exercise and like to lounge around all day.

3. Pitbulls

Pitbull, named one of the best dogs for truckers, smiles at truck driver.

Pitbulls are great companions. They’re considered one of the best dogs for truckers because they can offer safety and protection. They’re pretty active though, so you’ll have to get outside with them a couple times a day.

Keeping up with Policy

Again, it’s important to know the rules, stay updated with the latest trucking news regarding pets, and understand that each company is different.

While we’re on the topic of staying compliant with trucking policies, let’s talk about staying compliant with the IRS.

Your IRS 2290 is due September 3rd!
While IRS 2290 is typically due August 31, that date falls on a Saturday this year. Therefore, Form 2290 for 2019 is due September 3rd.
That means you’ve got a few extra days to submit IRS 2290 and make your HVUT 2290 payment.

There’s no need to stress. ExpressTruckTax will lead you through the filing process quickly, check for errors, and transmit your IRS 2290 securely.

We’ll also send you your 2290 Schedule 1 just minutes after you file. Plus, use the ExpressTruckTax mobile app to file Form 2290 for 2019 and pay HVUT 2290 on the go.

Don’t procrastinate! Pay your HVUT 2290 and file Form 2290 for 2019 NOW to avoid penalties from the IRS.

What You Need to Know About Traffic July 4th

What You Need to Know About Traffic July 4thWith a growing economy and rising consumer confidence, you can expect more than a few four-wheelers on the road this holiday weekend. This Independence Day the AAA has estimated 41.9 million travelers until Sunday, July 8th. This number is up 0.7 percent from last year’s estimate and the highest number since 2007 since before the great recession. At ExpressTruckTax we want you to always be prepared. Here is what you need to know about traffic July 4th.

The AAA says that the worst congestion can be expected around metropolitan areas as holiday travels are combined with regular commuters during the weekdays.

“This Independence Day will be one for the record books, as more Americans take to the nation’s roads, skies, rails and waterways than ever before,” Bill Sutherland, senior vice president of AAA Travel and Publishing, said in a statement from the company. “Confident consumers with additional disposable income will look to spend on travel this holiday, building on an already busy summer travel season.”

What You Need to Know About Traffic July 4thAt ExpressTruckTax we hope you will spend this Independence Day with your family and friends, however, if you find yourself out on the open road, we want to share our sincere appreciation. It is through the untiring resolve of those like yourself in the trucking community that we are able to celebrate. Your rigs brought us the fireworks, hot dogs, hamburgers, buns, charcoal, and grill that we all get to enjoy.

From the staff at ExpressTruckTax, we thank you for your dedication and determination in serving millions of Americans across the nation. ExpressTruckTax appreciates your continued efforts to keeping America moving. Happy Independence Day!

#WellnessWednesday: Managing Stress on the Road

Driving a truck can be among the most stressful jobs out there. Being responsible for up to 80,000 pounds of metal moving at speeds of 70 MPH or above places severe demands on your brain for attention, and produces rigorous tension in your body. Then there are other drivers, deadlines, (including tax-filing deadlines) adverse weather conditions, and the grueling number of hours on the road. It’s no wonder you truckers are constantly feeling enormous amounts of pressure and stress!

But did you know that stress actually triggers a number of health problems? Problems such as headaches, upset stomach, heartburn, high blood pressure, chest pains, and difficulty sleeping can all come from stress. Untreated stress can also contribute to diabetes, heart problems, skin conditions, asthma, arthritis, depression and anxiety. And believe it or not, 75 to 90 percent of all visits to the doctor are for stress-related illnesses.

Since stress is so prevalent in the trucking industry, and its effects so serious, one of the best things you can do for yourself as a trucker is to learn techniques for dealing with stress. Here are some great methods you can use to ease your stress and make each day on the road more peaceful.

  • Exercise. This is perhaps the most effective method for dealing with stress. The movement of exercise can release the pent-up energy that stress can cause. It may be difficult to find the time and a place to exercise while on the road, but even a 15 or 20 minute walk will do wonders towards relieving your driving stress.

  • Healthy Diet. Another difficult thing to manage while driving long distances is your diet. There aren’t a host of opportunities for healthy eating at most truck stops, but a healthy diet is a crucial factor in controlling your stress level. It boosts your immune system, making you more resistant to the effects of stress. Eating a variety of fresh fruits and vegetables and drinking plenty of water are two important ways to maintain a healthy diet.

  • Sleep. Getting adequate, restful sleep can do wonders for your stress level. If you’re getting enough exercise, you’re probably already sleeping well. Making sure you get plenty of restorative sleep keeps your mind in optimal condition, and will leave you better equipped to deal with whatever stress you may encounter during the day, and eliminate the unneeded stress that comes from not being well rested.

Other methods of managing stress include meditation, breathing techniques, and using smart strategies to eliminate any unneeded stress from your daily routine and activities.

We don’t have to tell you how stressful it is out there for you, Trucking Nation. But we can help you keep your unnecessary tension to a minimum, and using the above strategies will help you deal with the unavoidable pressures of the road.

ExpressTruckTax is #TruckingForACure

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, as most of you know. Since 1 in 8 women will be diagnosed with breast cancer at some point in their lives, there are few of us who aren’t touched and affected by this terrible disease.

Personally, I lost a high school friend to breast cancer this October 4th. Most of us here at ExpressTruckTax have been directly affected by losses from breast cancer, and it’s no wonder because breast cancer is the 2nd leading cause of death among women. Luckily, awareness and support have been building in recent years to find a cure.

We here at ExpressTruckTax are committed to helping find a cure for breast cancer. Although more and more activities and efforts on the part of finding a cure are taking place around the calendar year, October is the time to focus intensely on raising awareness, as well as funds, towards finding that cure.

United Materials, a concrete company in North Tonawanda, New York, is one member of the Trucking Nation who has stepped up and is making a difference in the fight. Not only has the company committed to raise money to fund research and help those affected, it’s also increased awareness by getting its pink concrete truck out on the road for everyone to see. Remember, pink is the adopted color for breast cancer awareness. Since the pink ribbon is the easily recognizable symbol of the fight for a cure, the pink United Materials concrete truck has a prominent pink ribbon on its side.

With the slogan “Our Commitment to the Cure is Concrete,” United Materials demonstrates its dedication to help find a cure and aid those families affected by breast cancer. The Western New York concrete company states that its pink concrete truck’s purpose is “to honor all survivors of breast cancer throughout the Niagara Region.”

Over 500 man hours were donated last year by United Materials’ more than 100 employees towards fundraising and awareness events in Western New York. Their pink concrete truck and employees have shown up to throw support behind their “Commitment to the Cure.”

This pink truck is just one example of how the hard-working members of the Trucking Nation can and are making a difference. There are countless pink trucks out on the roads, and their numbers are increasing every day. ExpressTruckTax is grateful for all your contributions and efforts to raise awareness of the need to find a cure for breast cancer. Keep it up, Trucking Nation, by joining the ExpressTruckTax team in raising awareness via social media!

Use #TruckingForACure and let us know your reason

for joining the fight against breast cancer!

As always, we’re here to help you and answer any questions you may have about ExpressTruckTax. You can call us at 704.234.6005 or email us any time at

Trucking News Update: New E-filing Rules

We always try to keep the trucking nation up-to-date with industry news. And telling you about the latest in IRS regulations is an important part of that. After all, we are ExpressTruckTax!

According to the updated 2015-16 IRS regulations, when filing HVUT for a vehicle you recently purchased from a private owner (i.e. not from a dealership or auction), the previous owner is responsible for paying tax on the partial month in which you purchase the vehicle.

For example, if you purchase a vehicle from a private seller today, your tax would be calculated starting August 1st.

Luckily, the ExpressTruckTax program has been updated to make this process super simple, so all you have to do is follow the same three simple steps which will create a new split return for the tax year, giving you prorated tax.

Step 1: Login or Create Account

  • If you’ve previously filed with us or if you have an account already, login to your account and resume or start your return.
  • If this is your first time filing, choose to create an account.
    • Pro-tip #1: To save time, you can choose to login with your Google+ or Facebook account.
  • Then you will either enter your business details or use the FastTransfer Feature to copy them from your previous return.

Step 2: Vehicle Details

  • In order to enter details for a vehicle you purchased from a private seller, simply choose to add a vehicle and enter all the information including gross vehicle weight and VIN.
  • Then check “This is a previously privately-owned vehicle” at the bottom of the “Add Truck” popup window.

  • Then click next and add any other trucks you may need to file for before moving on.
    • Pro-tip #2: There are several different types of vehicles to file for. Know the difference between Taxable Vehicles, Suspended Vehicles, Logging Vehicles, and Agricultural Vehicles.
  • Now you’ve created a split return in our system, meaning you pay a prorated heavy vehicle use tax amount on the new vehicle, instead of having to pay for the entire tax year.

Step 3: Pay and Transmit!

  • Now all you have to do is enter your payment information and securely transmit your return to the IRS.
    • Pro-tip #3: The IRS only accepts three payment methods, Direct Debit, EFTPS, and check or money order. No credit or debit cards.

  • Select your payment method, review your vehicles, and then transmit your return. It’s just that easy!

If you need any help with any step of the filing process, our dedicated support legends are here for you. Don’t hesitate to call them at 704.234.2005 during our new extended business hours from 8AM-8PM EST or send them at email at for 24/hour support.

E-file today! In just ten minutes, you can be finished, and get back to your life.

We've got another giveaway for you, Trucking Nation.  If you e-file with us and “Like” us on Facebook, you’ll be entered to win a portable blender to take on the road with you!

Account Setup

  • If you’ve never filed with us before, then you’ll need to set up your account. In order to do this, simply select “create new account” or choose to login with your Google+ or Facebook account.
  • If you’re a returning user, simply enter your information and login.

Vehicle Details

  • After you’ve entered your business information and selected to file for the current tax year, the next step is to enter the information for your vehicle or vehicles.
  • You can do this in a number of different ways. You can import them from a CSV file, you can enter them in manually, or if you’ve filed with us previously, you can import them from your virtual garage in TruckZone.
    • Pro-tip: There are three different kinds of vehicles you can enter. Make sure you’re entering them all on the right screen or you may have to file an amendment (and owe the IRS more money).
  • At the end of this step you can enter in any low mileage credits, and then quickly and easily move on to step 3!

Pay & Transmit

  • The final step in the e-filing process is to pay and securely transmit your return to the IRS.
  • Simply select your payment method from the three types the IRS accepts: Direct debit, EFTPS, and check or money order. Then review your information and securely transmit your return to the IRS.

5 Tips on How to Begin Your Wellness Journey

The best thing about deciding to live a healthier lifestyle is that you get to decide what that means for yourself. You get to choose what to change, how to eat, and how to exercise.

But maybe you aren’t sure where to start your wellness journey. We’ve got some tips for how to get started and how to change your habits over time. Because it’s not about the destination, it’s about the journey.

5 Tips on How to Begin Your Journey:

Believe in Yourself

The first step in beginning your wellness journey is to believe in yourself. Now this probably sounds like a total cliche, but trust me, if you don’t believe you can do it then you won’t make it very far.

Talk yourself up every day, realize that you’re so much stronger than you think you are and just do it! Because every single day is another step on your path to becoming a healthier person. And it matters, it really, really matters because your health is so important.

Eliminate Bad Habits

It takes 14-21 days to beat a bad habit, but once you’ve beaten it you’ve accomplished something great. Out there on the road it’s so easy to find yourself eating fried, sugary, and salty foods that are so bad for you. You don’t have to change your eating habits overnight, but you do have to make a choice.

Try eliminating one of those bad things and switching it out for something healthier. Switch from milk chocolate to dark chocolate, from ice cream to yogurt, from fried chicken to grilled chicken, or from french fries to apple slices or baked sweet potato fries. There are so many ways to make a change in yourself. All you have to do is start small and keep on trucking.

Water Is Your New Best Friend

Lose the juice and the soda and switch to water. This might seem like a huge change, but you can take your time with this one too. If you’re not a big fan of water or need a lot of caffeine to keep you going, try moving to a drink that has less calories and sodium (perhaps a diet soda).

Then you can switch from that to carbonated or flavored water. Eventually you’ll learn to love it because drinking water will make your feel better! You’ll be less thirsty, increase your circulation, flush toxins out of your body, and it will even improve your skin.

Dance, Dance, Dance

Being cooped up in a truck all day doesn’t give you much time for exercise, but it doesn’t have to be that way. There are little things you can do to improve your mobility inside of your cabin. Maybe you have a song you like to dance to, crank it up and do a little dance in your truck!

And any time to have a moment to stop, take some time to do some stretching to get your blood flowing, Not only does stretching help with your circulation, it also makes you feel so much better. You can also make it a point to walk a little further every day, every time you have a break. Eventually you’ll begin to feel like a new person!

Be Mindful of What You Consume

You don’t have to go all out and eat nothing but salads and vegetables, but you should be mindful of what you consume. If you’re eating a lot of fast food, make sure you pay attention to the calories (most restaurants will have them on their menus) in your favorite meal.

If they seem too high, try eating just the sandwich or main entree, or substituting those calorie high french fries for something healthier like apple slices. You can still have french fries if you want to, but make sure you know what you’re putting into your body. Because monitoring the amount of calories you consume each day can help you feel less tired and lethargic and much more energetic.

Food can give you energy, but only if you use it right!

Got some tips for how to stay healthy on the road? Or maybe you just want to share some highlights from your own wellness journey. Drop us a line on Facebook or Twitter! We love hearing from you, Trucking Nation!

#TruckTechTuesday: Trucks, Tech, and Apps Galore!

Happy #TruckTechTuesday, Trucking Nation!

As the world of technology continues to grow, there are more and more areas that are providing excellent tech. Now the technology world has become so huge, that it has expanded beyond phones and computers to heavy vehicles.

Now we live in a world where technology is working to make trucks better. Through truck extensions, truck apps, and new truck concepts, the tech industry is trying to turn trucks friendly for our environmental future.

That and new tech makes your truck look really cool! Which is what we talked about in our previous Truck Tech Blog.

Trucking Awesome (Concept Trucks)

Last time we talked about BulletTruck from AirFlow, but this week’s truck looks even more sleek. Introducing Peterbilt’s trucking awesome concept truck, Sentinal.

Peterbilt refers to it’s concept truck as the new American dream. And if that picture is any indication, they definitely aim to deliver an extravagant truck basically drowning in luxury. Plus, it’s design makes it more aerodynamic (which is great for your fuel mileage)!

In fact, the design could improve fuel economy and range of long haulers by 25%! And this truck concept is getting closer and closer to becoming a reality.

Truck Extensions

This week’s truck extension is a little bit of a wild card because is is both an app and a truck extension. The extension is called Peloton, and it is a trucking app concept built by Peloton Technology.

Peloton is an automated vehicle technology company that is working to connect collision avoidance technology, and prevent the most common truck accidents. They also provide a reduction in aerodynamic drag by linking two trucks together in what they call a platoon. And on-road testing showed that they were saving fleets a lot of fuel!

So in addition to the added safety of travelling in packs, automatic braking, and generally being really, really cool, Peloton will also save you a lot of money in the long haul.

Apps for Road Warriors

Perhaps one of the most influential apps of the summer is the FMCSA Guide Rules and Regulations app by Wright Media, which you can download from both the Google Play Store and the Apple Store.

Now it might not sound like much, but consider this: this is the first mobile guide to everything you need to know about the FMCSA Rules and Regulations. That means you get instant access!

You can look up any rule or regulation just by using their search feature. No more searching through bulky books and trying to figure out the rules.

And, this app includes their new “Fuel Dawg” feature where you can locate the best diesel prices from thousands of truck stops based on your GPS location!

But wait, there’s more! This app also includes the latest trucking job opportunities, and access to contact those trucking company directly. It was even featured in our ExpressTruckTax IFTA blog about hot summer apps!

If you have any questions, comments, or more #TruckTech you want to see featured here, drop us a line on our Facebook or Twitter. We love hearing trucking stories and learning about new truck tech!

As always, if you find yourself with some tax questions, give our dedicated support team a call at 704.234.6005 or email them at for 24 hour support in both English and Spanish!

And don’t forget! You only have 7 more days left to pre-file. If you want to be entered to win a ExpressTruckTax Swag Bag and save a little money of the e-filing price (with the promo code PREFILE), then don’t delay, pre-file today!

Trucking News Update: IRS Offices Now by Appointment Only

We have breaking news, Trucking Nation!

On June 12, 2015, the IRS announced that it is making 10% of its offices available by appointment only. This is yet another in a series of moves by the IRS to encourage tax filers to go paperless and start e-filing as it is more efficient and cost-effective for both tax filers and the IRS.

Prior to this, the IRS also made it mandatory for trucking companies that have more than 25 vehicles to e-file for the same reason, proving only one thing: that e-filing is the future of the tax industry.

Since the IRS prefers e-filing to paper filing, the tax filing industry will continue to change. This means that here at ExpressTruckTax, as industry leaders in e-filing Truck Taxes, we are now more than ever the best and easiest way for you to file your taxes.

If you need to go to your local IRS office for any reason, be sure to call ahead and make certain that your IRS office allows walk-in’s, or use that opportunity to make an appointment.

  • Birmingham, AL; Mobile, AL; Redding, CA; Denver, CO; Hartford, CT; Fort Lauderdale, FL; Atlanta, GA; Des Moins, IA; Boise, ID; Chicago, IL; Muncie, IN; Terre Haute, IN; Louisville, KY; Paducah, KY; Wichita, KS; Monroe, LA; Hyannis, MA; Grand Rapids, MI; Marquette, MI; Kalispell, MT; Wilmington, NC; Norfolk, NE; Cherry Hill, NJ; Albany, NY; Elmira, NY; Washington, PA; York, PA; Rapid City, SD; Nashville, TN; Austin, TX; San Angelo, TX; San Antonio, TX; Seattle, WA; Silversale, WA; Tacoma, WA; Daluth, WI; Madison, WI; Sophia, WV.

If you need to contact your local IRS office, the IRS lists the numbers by state and city here.

#FreightTechFriday: What's New in Truck Tech

The world of technology is expanding, and so is the trucking industry alongside it. There are more technologies out for truckers now than there ever have been.

Between apps like ExpressTruckTax, to truck extensions like Trailer Tail, truckers can now be more economic and more environmentally friendly.

And best of all, there’s even more trucks, truck extensions, and trucking apps coming out all the time to make the industry more environmentally friendly. Not to mention, these advancements in technology can make the lives of the people transporting our goods safer and easier.

It’s a whole new world out there, Trucking Nation! Let’s take a look!

Trucking Awesome (Concept Trucks)

High-tech truck concepts have been dominating blogs and social media posts lately. These futuristic concepts are not only helpful for the trucking industry and the environment, they’re also really, really cool!

Don’t believe me? Check out AirFlow’s new concept BulletTruck:

With this new concept truck, AirFlow is hoping to revolutionize the trucking industry in both aerodynamics and fuel consumption.

In fact, this summer AirFlow drove their BulletTruck prototype from Connecticut to California to show off the gorgeous design as well as test it’s amazing aerodynamics. Well, that and to show off it’s fantastic fuel mileage.

AirFlow has increased the mileage from the roughly 7 MPG trucks are averaging now to averaging 13.4 MPG on a trip across the country! If that’s not revolutionary, I don’t know what is.

Truck Extensions

Your truck is essentially an extension of yourself. You spend a lot of time hauling goods and travelling from place to place, essentially seeing all of North America.

That means you probably don’t want your truck looking drab; it should be a reflection of you and your awesome personality! Well, that and it doesn’t hurt to make your truck a little more environmentally friendly, with extensions like AirTab and Trailer Tail, that we talked about in a previous blog.

But there’s even more awesome technologies out there for truckers and drivers alike! Perhaps the most recent one gaining a lot of traction in the trucking market are Dash Cams.

Dash Cams are smallish cameras that go on your dash and film while you’re driving. This way any accident you get into, you have proof of fault. Well, that and you can take some fantastic video and pictures of your journey across the continent!

Apps for Road Warriors

Smartphone applications are the largest market for truck technology (and for technology in general). There are apps for almost everything these days, including several trucking-specific ones. From tax calculators to truck tax apps galore, you can find them for your smartphone or tablet.

A big chunk of the app market for truckers, especially lately, are reminder apps. From simple calendars to apps that are a little more complex and contain pre-loaded trucking industry deadlines.

That’s where RigMinders comes in. Rigminders is a reminder app geared specifically toward truckers, and it contains lots of pre-loaded industry deadlines, such as when 2290’s are due and when IFTA is due as well.

Then on top of all that, you can also load personal deadlines and truck maintenance deadlines. You’ll never forget another appointment, tax due date, or whatever you want!

Rigminders will send you push notifications on your phone and an email reminding you of your upcoming deadlines. You can even set how many notifications you want, what types of notifications you want, and when the reminder will be sent to you (5 days before, 1 day before, etc).

If you have any questions, comments, or more #FreightTech you want to see featured here, drop us a line on our Facebook or Twitter. We love hearing trucking stories and learning about new in truck tech!

And as always, if you find yourself with some tax questions, give our dedicated support legends a call at 704.234.6005 or email them at for 24 hour support in both English and Spanish!

Pre-filing for All: E-filing for 2015-16 Tax Year Now Available!

Looks like the cat is out of the bag, Trucking Nation! And we’re happy to announce that we are offering pre-filing for everyone this HVUT renewal season!

Beginning right now, this very second, we are offering pre-filing for everyone who wants to get ahead of the game. Pre-filing now means you have an extra month to get your taxes done and get back to your life!

The Advantages are Endless

Now, you may be wondering what the benefits of pre-filing are, or how pre-filing affects you. Well, just like when you e-file with us normally, the benefits of pre-filing are endless!

Here’s what pre-filing can do for you:

  • Pre-filing gives you more time (a month’s worth!) to amend your return if it gets rejected or if you make a tiny mistake.

  • Even though you’re pre-filing, it doesn’t mean you have to pre-pay! And there’s no extra cost to pre-file with us either—still the best value in the industry.

  • You can still use the same 3 payment methods you’re used to: Direct Debit, EFTPS, and Check or Money Order. BUT if you schedule an EFTPS payment for the deadline on August 31st, or elect to pay by check or money order, then you won’t have to pay your taxes until the deadline day. That’s three whole months to save up your tax!

  • Your return will be at the very top of the stack when the IRS begins processing returns on July 1. This means you’ll get your Stamped Schedule 1 before anyone else too!

  • Then you can get back to your life! After you pre-file you don’t have to worry at all because we’ll take it from there. We will securely transmit your return to the IRS for you and then email you your Schedule 1.

And so much more! Pre-filing is a way for you to get your Form 2290 out of the way, fast. No muss, no fuss, just getting on with your life. Don’t believe me? Just have a look at Marvin & Larry!

1 Promocode, 2 Awesome Benefits

Here’s the next best thing about pre-filing. During the month of June we’re offering 10% off the filing fee when you use the promocode PREFILE at checkout!

And to top it all off, everyone who pre-files with us in the month of June is entered to win a Swag Bag, complete with a $50 gift card and a bunch of ExpressTruckTax goodies, or swag, as the kids are calling it these days!

If you find yourself with questions, we’re here for you! So give us a call at 704.234.6005, shoot us an email at, or find us on chat on our website. We’ll provide you with all the help you need, day or night in English and in Spanish! Don’t be a Larry, pre-file with us today!

6 Tips for E-filing Success This Renewal Season

Tax season will be here before you know it. And as the HVUT renewal season approaches, you’ve probably found yourself with more and more questions about what to do and how to even file in the first place. And that’s what we’re here for!

So here are 6 tips to help you successfully e-file your Form 2290 during this renewal season:

1. Get Your EIN Early

Getting your EIN is important! It takes 10 business days for the IRS to activate it, and you need it in order to e-file.

After your EIN has been processed, you will need to know the exact business name associated with the EIN account in order to use it. If you have forgotten the name associated with the EIN, you can call the IRS EIN hotline at 1.800.829.4933 to verify, and then keep it safe because it is imperative to your tax-filing success!

2. Know Your Vehicles

Next on the path to tax success is knowing your vehicles. And I’m not talking about just knowing the weight of your vehicle or the first use date—even though you definitely need to know that as well—I’m also talking about knowing your type of vehicle. There are four different types of vehicles you can file a Form 2290 for, and knowing which category your vehicle falls under can make a huge difference on your bank account!

  • Heavy Vehicles: A heavy vehicle is any other vehicle, weighing 55,000 lbs or more, that has driven over the 5,000 mile limit. For these vehicles you file your Form 2290 as normal and pay your heavy vehicle use tax.
  • Suspended: Suspended vehicles are any heavy vehicle or agricultural vehicle that have been driven under their mileage limit for the tax year. For heavy vehicles this limit is 5,000 and for agricultural vehicles this limit is 7,500. Having a suspended vehicle means after you file your heavy vehicle use tax, you are eligible for a refund!
  • Agriculture: Agricultural vehicles are any vehicles used for farming or agriculture. These vehicles can be driven 7,500 miles on public highways until they are no longer considered suspended, at which time, HVUT is due.
  • Logging: Logging vehicles are any vehicles that are used to transport forest materials within or from a foresting site, or a vehicle that moves forested materials from one site to another. With logging vehicles, companies and drivers alike are eligible to pay less taxes for the tax year. So if you drive a logging truck, make sure you specify when you’re e-filing!

3. Keep Accurate Records

Besides your EIN and knowing your types of vehicles, keeping accurate records is the most important part of e-filing.

It is your responsibility to keep accurate trip logs, especially if you are an agricultural vehicle or a suspended vehicle. You will need to prove to the IRS that you went under 7,500 and 5,000 miles, respectively, during the tax year. If you find yourself in need of some help keeping your truck records updated, why not try a business management program designed for transportation businesses?

4. Make Your Business Management Software Work for You

In addition to keeping good records, you also need to have good business management software. You need a place to securely keep track of all your trucks, taxes due, important industry dates, and so on.

A good business management solution should be able to keep track of everything so you don’t have to! You should be able to search records and get reminders of important dates without constant frustration and involvement.

And not only that! Your business management solution should be able to:

  • Keep track of orders and invoices
  • Help create a better line of communication between truckers and management
  • Schedule maintenance by truck (and just once!)
  • Enter paychecks and driver settlements
  • Provide trucker-centric GPS to get from place to place
  • Keep track of customers, brokers, carriers, and vendors
  • Make running a business a little (or a lot!) less stressful

5. Rely on Great Support

Filing your taxes isn’t always easy, but it can be when you have the right tools! When it comes down to it, we understand that you probably have a lot of questions about how HVUT regulations. This is where the support legends come in!

At ExpressTruckTax we have the best support team in the industry. And they’re available all year long in order to make your tax experience that much easier.

So if you find yourself with a question in the “off” season, rest assured that our support team will be here for you. Because we understand that tax questions never take a break, so neither should we!

6. Know Your Industry Deadlines & Important Dates

The last thing you need to know in order to e-file for success are industry deadlines and important industry dates. Now, this may sound like a lot of work, but we have a free app that does all of that for you! It’s called RigMinders, and it’s available for both Android and iPhone users.

With Rigminders, you can keep track of everything in the industry, in your trucking business, and in your life! Know when to file your HVUT, IFTA, IRP, UCR and much more. All industry filing deadlines come preloaded to save you time. And you can use the personal reminders to schedule truck maintenance. There’s nothing better than staying ahead of the game and keeping on top of these deadlines!

Continue to stay ahead of the game with ExpressTruckTax! If you find yourself with questions, comments, or concerns, we’re here for you with 24/7 support in English & Spanish! So give us a call between 8AM-6PM EST at 704.234.6005, or send us an email at anytime, day or night!

E-file in High Gear with our FastTransfer Feature

Whoever said that copying is cheating?!?!

Well today, we’re going to show you how copying can actually send you to the front of the class, while also saving you tons of time filing your HVUT each and every year. Forever.

How is this possible? It is possible through the power of the FastTransfer.

The FastTransfer Feature is just one of the many free and exclusive benefits that we offer our returning users! If you e-filed with us last year, use the FastTransfer to duplicate your previous year’s return. With just a few clicks, your information will populate in the current year’s return... like magic!

Information doesn’t change much from year to year, this feature will give you a much needed escape from redundancy, and typing! Once you’ve transferred your tax info, you can still edit your current return as needed. But rest assured, that with the FastTransfer Feature, you won’t have to enter the same information all over again. That’s the beauty of e-filing with ExpressTruckTax!

A FastTransfer How To

If you’ve already e-filed your previous year’s heavy vehicle use tax with ExpressTruckTax, then it’s time to get in the fast lane and FastTransfer your tax info to this year’s return.

Here is everything you need to know about how to use the FastTransfer Feature in ExpressTruckTax:

  • Step One: Login to your account and select “Start” under Form 2290
  • Step Two: Choose your first use month
  • Step Three: If you have a previous year’s return that has been accepted by the IRS, the FastTransfer Feature will ask whether you want to continue with the previous return or want to create a new one. Select “Continue” under “Previously Accepted Return.”
  • Step Four: On the next screen, under Action select “Copy this Return”
  • Step Five: If there are any changes that need to be made, you can make them here. Otherwise, select “Review” to check your Form 2290 for any errors.
  • Step Six: Submit your return to the IRS.
If you’re a more visual learner, we also have a step-by-step video showing you how to use the FastTransfer Feature to save you time every year you file!

The Future of Truck Tech is Here, Trucking Nation!

Since the beginning of time, trucks and wind resistance have been mortal enemies.

Maybe that’s why truckers and trucking companies alike have been developing new technology and new trucks to be able to combat this aerodynamic issue!

Minimizing wind resistance for trucks is becoming a very possible reality with the new technology being offered by AirTab, as well as TrailerTail.

Not to mention that Walmart and Mercedes are currently working on concept trucks that are not only built to minimize wind resistance, but also increase highway safety!

These new truck technologies will provide more savings and safety for truckers and everyone else on the road. But what exactly are the benefits of these new technologies?

Let’s begin with AirTab. AirTab is a small triangular, wishbone-like device you place on the end of your trailer and the end of your cab.

This tiny device provides better fuel economy without being bulky, and minimizes wind resistance to help stabilize the trailer and make for a smoother ride. According to their website, AirTab can also increase fuel economy by up to 5% simply by combating the effects of wind resistance.

AirTab benefits other drivers as well. Not only does it amp up the safety on heavy vehicles, it also minimizes the rain and snow blow back, providing more visibility for truckers and cars alike. AirTabs come in a variety of colors, and they provide a line for compact cars, small trucks, and SUVs.

The concept of TrailerTail is similar to that of AirTab. However, the TrailerTail takes a different approach to minimizing wind resistance. Instead of a small triangular device, TrailerTail provides a large square “tail” to place on the back of your trailer.

TrailerTail is incredibly easy to install and is very durable. It even makes opening the back of your truck easy because it folds as you open the back of the trailer, holding the doors open until you’ve unloaded.

In addition to durability, TrailerTail, much like AirTab, also increases fuel economy by up to 5%. TrailerTail is compliant with 2010 CARB regulations for trailer aerodynamics and is exempt from U.S. DOT length restrictions.

New Concept Trucks

Walmart and Mercedes have introduced new concept trucks with better aerodynamics. These trucks are like something out of a science fiction novel, but both companies are trying desperately to make these vehicles less of a concept and more of a reality.

With Walmart, their design aims to minimize wind resistance and provide a light-weight truck. Their new concept design is made exclusively with carbon fiber, which makes the design almost 4,000 pounds lighter. Not to mention, the overall design of the truck is mouth-watering.

Mercedes, on the other hand, has introduced a truck concept that will virtually drive itself (in addition to being more aerodynamic)! Their truck concept is all about keeping truckers and the roads they drive on safe.
The truck cannot completely drive itself, so it would still need a driver to remain in the cab in order to function, but it can work with the driver to allow them time to drink coffee, check messages, or use a business management program like TruckLogics.

No matter where the future of truck tech is heading, ExpressTruckTax will always be here to help you. Whether you’re E-filing in your current big rig or a futuristic giant from Walmart or Mercedes, we’ll be here to answer your questions and provide an excellent product, from the now into the future.

As always, if you have any questions call us at 704.234.6005 or e-mail us at for 24/7 support. And don’t forget to tell us what you think about what’s next in truck tech on Facebook or Twitter.
